Enlarged Tongue

An enlarged tongue could be caused by a large number of medical problems, so diagnosis is often tricky. It can be caused by an infection or allergy, or sometimes there are genetic factors that come into play. As the tongue is filled from the lymphatic system, there is a possibility that a disorder with this system might cause the swelling, but only a medical professional will be able to make that diagnosis. If a tongue has swollen up rapidly it is likely to be an allergic reaction, which could be very serious it if interrupts a person’s ability to breathe, so medical help should be sought out immediately.

Yes. Lupus can lead to kidney problems, which causes a high protein count in your urine and a high amount of protein can cause swelling of the tongue. Try the Healthchecker on this site regarding 'oral health'. I am currently being tested for Lupus and have a high protein count in my urine - my tongue's health suggest I have too much protein as it's swollen. Get your protein/ kidney health checked by your GP ASAP. :)

I have a swollen tongue and yes it bothers me with the teeth indentations and just psychological. I did something stupid I know but was scared. I was kissed by someone my lips were burning so thought it was herpes. so I researched on the internet and saw abreva. so I go to the drug store without reading it carefully. and put it on my lips because I was so afraid someone would see a cold sore on my lips. would rather have a cold sore then swollen tongue. well it did affect my tongue and mouth. it was extremely painful for months until my tongue healed. I could eat anything that had salt or pepper and no spices. I am just afraid now it is permanently damaged. when I put the abreva on my lips not a cold sore it hurt my mouth and tongue. never thougt something you put on your mouth could be so damaging. I am not dead and didn't die but just wished with so much advanced technology is there is any help to swink my tongue back to the condition it was before. any suggestions. I have tried several things in the past but nothing worked even predizone. thanks
