Is it normal to be scared of the doctor? Vote now! >

Gender Dysphoria is a condition where a person feels they are trapped in the body of the wrong sex – men feel they should have been born a woman, and women feel they should have been born a man. Symptoms of anxiety and confusion normally appear at a young age, but persist into adulthood and cause a number of psychiatric symptoms (though ongoing research is examining whether there is a biological cause). Treatment options can vary from simple lifestyle changes so that a person ‘lives’ as their preferred sex, to more advanced treatment options, including hormone therapy to change a person’s physical appearance, right through to surgery to permanently change a person’s sex.

Hi, I don't know where you live but I don't think you need your GP to refer you to the clinic. You should be able to go to them directly though they may take several months before you get an appointment and have a chance to speak to someone. I went directly but also spoke to my GP but I regret ever going to my GP for help because he ended up discussing it with his colleagues, treating it as a joke and now the use it to humiliate me every time I visit them for anything else. A lot of GPs even the younger ones still approach this in a very old fashioned way which is very unhelpful if you are already suffering enough.

Your GP is playing with you, TELL her to refer you to Dr N Christopher or Dr Ralph they are at UCLH in London as I been through the whole thing.

I'm 19, living under guardianship from my parents and desperate to begin my transition from male to female, but at the moment nothing is being done! Not only that but I'm worried I won't pass for a real girl, either! My life is in such a mess right now, and I feel absolutely disgusting! Is there anything I can do?

I saw you message and had to reply. I am a boy but was born somthing else. I was 14 when I told my folks, I'm 19 now and have had all my body surgery. For first time in my life I feel content, you will feel it to when you get your treatment, hang in there. But I felt EXACTLY like you before my first surgery -I didn't think I was going to make it. First, don't wait. Tell your parents if you haven't already. Careful how you word it, if they don't know what "G.D" is they may misunderstand and believe you are "wanting" to be a girl. You must explain very clearly you have ALWAYS been a girl but through a birth defect your physically not. The sooner you tell them the sooner they will come to understand. Second, with or without parents help, see local GP(docter), explain situation best you can and REQUEST, don't ask, to be refered to nearest Gender Identity Clinic AND ask for all infomation regarding NHS treatment for G.D -they should give you plenty of printed papers on treatment processes. Also search online, lots of info about. If you are unlucky and have a unhelpful GP, DONT accept it, finish meeting then go to front desk and ask for an appoinment with different doctor. Also search online- http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Transhealth/Pages/local-gender-identity-clinics.aspx and "Local Gender Identity Clinics" results should give you a list. You can also ring up above local clinic, loosely explain situation, ask to self-refer and see Gender Identity psychologist. This is the first thing you need to do to get things moving. Tip...if you are able to, inform them you can make any/date time for appointment and will take short notice cancellation slots. BIG BIG Tip - when talking to psychologist... My psyc was cagey, I had to be distraught enough to prove I had G.D BUT was sane enough to "make my own decisions" about my treatment. It was hard but you will pull through. Plus, always be polite (yes sir no sir stuff), that gets them on your side but, should they try and make things less than what they are be politely adammant that you NEED this treatment. You can't stress enough how like hell on earth you feel. If I write anymore I think the site will blow up, if you need any links, tips, processes, explainations don't heisate to reply/contact me. I never want anyone to suffer the way I did so want to make this as straightfoward as I can for you or anybody reading this. Folks, I had my first hormones when 15, first surgery when 17, finished all surgies when 19. I know the health system inside out. Wellwisher

I am trapped in a long time,in a man's body I need to go to Dr...

Oh, man. You have NO idea how frustrating my life is now! I'm currently 18 going on 19 and I feel like a girl trapped in a boy's body. I went to see a phsyciatrist back when I was 16. Skip to threeyears later, and NOTHING has been done! No hormones, no surgery, NOTHING!!! I hate being identified as male and I feel like my life is being wasted! In fact, scratch that! This isn't life! This isn't living at all! This is more like some horrible nightmare that nobody will wake me up from! I want something to be done desperately! I refuse to be kept waiting for until I'm 50 or something!!!! I want at least a chance to live a normal life as a normal girl!!!!! My body isn'ta temple, it's a prison! And although it iisn't the equivalent of fort Knox, the people who should break me out are too lazy to do anything! WHAT IS THE BLOODY POINT!!!!? SOMEBODY DO SOMETHING!!!!!

I would stress to your mom that using the right pronouns and addressing you by your preffered name is very important. Life saving, even. So is testosterone, if you want to go through hormone replacement therapy. It's perfectly normal to not identify with the gender you were born with, just try to accept it in yourself and surround yourself with accepting people.

(appologize about my english) Hi there,I am 28 years old, borned as a female,I am from Bulgaria(east Europe). All of my life I've been boy ,deep and not so deep in my heart and mind!In Bulgaria people still dont accept me,and people like me.For 28 years I spoke 3 times about me with my mom, and once with my brother.Never with my dad and rest of my family. They still think that Im just that kind of girl...One year ago I understood that its possible ! I can be a real man! But I dont know anyone in Bulgaria who can give me infomation or support.Actually there's no one who made the transition ftm yet(as I know)..I need help.Im thinking about suicide.I dont see mean to live this life anymore.I really do not enjoy it!I have friends, who support me(they are all straight).I had a lot of girlfriends, cause I am sweet and beautiful as they said. They accepted me as I want, like a boy!...But last years, as old I become I feel like I lose my wish for this live! I need my body. I dont know a lot about testosterone , hormons, surgeries etc., I need information, if I can do it in other country? Thank you

You shouldn't feel like you want to commit suicide, you can go to another country to do the transition and in England it is a common thing, people feeling like they are born as a wrong gender. There are lots of people who can support you in England, I hope you get if sorted soon.
