Halitosis

Bacteria from bad breath

Is it normal to be scared of the doctor? Vote now! >

There’s no shame in having halitosis (or bad breath, as it is more commonly known). In fact, 95% of us suffer from bad breath at some time in our lives, and one in four adults suffers from bad breath on a regular basis. A quick way to test the potency of your breath is to lick the inside of your wrist with the back of your tongue, let it dry for a few seconds, and then smell. If you subsequently find yourself recoiling in horror from a foul stench, then you should perhaps consider visiting your dental hygienist. Bad breath usually stems from poor oral hygiene (including neglecting the tongue area, which hosts the bacteria that cause bad breath). However, smoking and drinking too much alcohol can also contribute. Sprays, mints and chewing gum will only temporarily mask your bad breath, whereas improving your oral hygiene will ultimately pay-off.

If you’re suffering from any of the conditions featured on this site and want to apply for an onscreen consultation with one of the EB team then you can find more details here >>

I had the same problem and finally after 22 years found the solution. My breath problem wasn't because of my hygiene, I had perfect hygiene perfect teeth but turned out to be sinus infection which was giving me that awful taste in my myou,so what I did was a sinus irrigation completely clean my sinus cavity with saline salt sold at your local Walgreens for couple dollars name "NEILMED SINUS RINSE"

When I was about 10 I was given a lot more responsibility by my Grandparents who I was and still am living with. Unfortunately, being just a kid I never took the time to do my teeth and sometimes I would go for weeks at a time without doing it, and yet no one ever told me to carry out any oral care routine. I got the terrible habit of not doing it and I have only recently got myself into a very consistent routine. I am now 18 and I have been doing my teeth twice an day, flossing once a day and only using mouthwash 30 mins or more after brushing to maximise fluoride effectiveness, for some time now. I also use a tongue brush and tongue scraper every day; cleaning right to the back of the tongue every single time I brush. And yet... it's still there. I brush and scrape but just minutes after I have bad breath and have to resort to chewing gum. I have tried CB-12 mouthwash and gum but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. I'm thinking of seeing my GP but I just hope there is solution.

Hi Deb, I feel the same way, I am 100% sure my bad breath does NOT come from my mouth, I really take good care of my teeth and scrape my tongue a few times a day. I am 37 yrs old female, I feel healthy, I exercise at least 3 times a week but have this horrible BB problem. My bad Smell comes out from mouth and nose, so even if I have my mouth closed still people can smell it. I really hate that, I have kids and they love me regardless of my problem but I have NO SOCIAL LIFE, have some trouble doing normal things in public. I get extremely nervous when I have to be in public. I get so anxious when We are invited to a party, and I feel like a bad mom because my kids want to go but I feel extremely anxious and afraid. I know people are going to judge me because of my weird smell. People normally think you don't shower or don't brush your teeth, I hate that! I understand everyone of you sufferers, I started praying for you and me. Now I live for my kids but it is hard.

Hi, I am 32 years and have halitosis. If bad breath is called halitosis. I have visited many dentists and ENT specialists and they say the same as one of them stated in the blog earlier, "Everything is fine". If everything is fine, why have I got bad breath yet. Somedays I brush like 3 to 4 times depending on meeting up with clients or moving out....Even then it exists.. First of all, Can doctors really get rid of halitosis or all these check up thing and visiting doctors for this is a waste of time??? As the topic goes, it's really not about embarrassing but quite disturbing. Really disturbing the people around, myself first, the flow of work, etc..
