Priapism

Most men probably think that the ability to sustain an erection for several hours is a cause for celebration. In fact, many would perhaps demand that a statue be ‘erected’ in their honour to mark such a feat of super-virility. However, men everywhere should be careful what they wish for, because an erection that simply won’t quit is more commonly known as a priapism. This can be very painful and occurs when the blood in the penis is trapped and unable to return to the circulation (it isn’t necessarily related to sexual stimulation or desire). The medical name for this condition is derived from a Greek god of fertility called Priapus, who was renowned for his sizeable and constantly engorged erect penis. However, even the Gods won’t be able to help you if you don’t get this condition treated, because failure to do so can lead to scarring and permanent impotence.

At the age of 56 being a diabetic on numerous medications including seizure meds, asthmatic and a various number of other meds. Aside from the vast deabilitating effects of diabetes, including erectile dysfunction; sex has never been a huge priority of thinking in my life due to the traumatic experience of gang rape at gunpoint 34 years ago which took away most of my former sexual identity as a heterosexual and has made me Asexual. Lately I was prescribed Gabapentin 300mg for Neuropathy pain in my hands, feet and legs which I take before bedtime along with other meds including dilantin. For the last few nights I've been disturbed by priapism which causes pain and insomnia. Had chance to very embarrassingly and nervously talk to a nurse that visits me twice a week due to diabetic wounds on my leg and toes. She was very sympathetic and understanding, and said I should contact my doctor. Of all the embarrassing hateful things one has to face in life. My understanding is that men suffering sustained priapism in necessity of going to a hospital are given a continous spinal epidural until priapism subsides and immediately see a urologist in an emergency setting.
