Episode 8 - Sundown

Sundown Festival

This week the Embarrassing Bodies team are at the Sundown Festival in Norfolk, along with 25,000 other revellers. Insect bites are rife, So Dr Pixie is teaching our festival-goers how to minimise irritation and spot signs of infection, such as blistering or pus. If you’re concerned that a bite might be infected, see a GP as soon as possible.

There’s also a case of bacterial vaginosis and thrush to deal with, although fortunately treatment is relatively straightforward. A course of antibiotics for the bacteria vaginosis and antifungals for the thrush should have both cleared up with the minimum of fuss.

Dr Pixie uses the festival as a chance to educate people about bodily noises and what they mean. We all know what a good fart sounds like, but if it’s accompanied by abdominal pain, recurring diarrhoea or blood in your poo, get yourself to the doctor. Similarly if you’re a girl who experiences regular vaginal farting (queefing, fanny farting or whatever you’d like to call it!) and the sound is accompanied by a bad smell, it could be a sign that something’s amiss. As always, see your doctor if you have any concerns.

Last on Dr Pixie’s playlist of bodily noises is ringing in the ears or tinnitus, something to which festival-goers are particularly susceptible. Repeated exposure to loud noise can lead to permanent tinnitus and significant hearing loss, so turn those headphones down! There’s no cure for tinnitus, so consider using earplugs at gigs and cranking the volume down instead of up. It could pay dividends in the long run.

Microbiologist Dr Val is on hand to swab some festival toilets, and the results aren’t pretty. Coliform bacteria, present in poo, were everywhere. These microscopic nasties can cause some serious stomach bugs, so it’s imperative everybody washes their hands after using the loo.

I am wanting to get a breast enhancement due to rigorous breast feeding but have heard and seen all the health risks of breast enhancements. Please can you recommend someone so that I will not be in any danger from someone not fully qualified?
