Embarrassing Fat Bodies: Between the Sheets

Morbid Obesity

First into the clinic is 27 year old newlywed Michael, whose 37 stone weight is crushing his hopes for the future. He’s all too aware that his weight and lifestyle are most likely leading him to an early grave. Michael’s body mass index (BMI), a weight-to-height ratio used to calculate obesity, is a whopping 60. A healthy BMI should be somewhere from 18 to 25. Michael’s BMI catapults him a long way into the morbidly obese category, so its no surprise he’s got problems down below. A large pad of fat on his front is a real inconvenience for Michael during moments of intimacy. On top of this, obesity-related issues like high blood pressure and diabetes fur up and weaken blood vessels, reducing blood flow to the penis and preventing an erection. In fact, erectile dysfunction is two and a half times more likely to happen to obese men than those with a healthy weight.

Dr Christian feels surgery is Michael’s best hope, but only if he quits smoking. After being nicotine-free for two months, Michael sees a specialist to find out whether he’s suitable for surgery. A gastric bypass is performed, drastically limiting the amount of food the stomach can hold and digest. The intestines are then rerouted, avoiding the largest part of the stomach and restricting the number of calories the body can absorb.

Four months later Michael has lost a dramatic eight stone, looking and feeling better. Quitting smoking has seen his general health take a dramatic upturn, while his sex life is becoming less of a logistical challenge. By stopping smoking and shedding weight, Michael can now focus his energies on starting a family.

im very overweight for my age and height. i dont eat really stupid things. i rarely eat takeaways or junk food or fatty foods. in general i eat pretty healthily. i exercise a little. i dont have the means of going to the gym and have no space in my home for exercise equipment so walking is the most exercise i do. i also suffer with acid reflux, which i know weight can be a ppart of that which is another reason for me to lose weight. any help would be really appreciated thanks :)

I'm am Super obese (BMI of 52.8) I also have issues with my heart but am relatively young (27), A few years ago I was overweight but ballooned during a long period of being out of work (I have however been in work for the past few years). I have quite a severe issue in that I do/don't want to loss the weight. I want to loss it because of the impact of my health and as my partner would be happier with me at a lower weight(both from a health issue and a physical one). I however like being fat, I enjoy the way it feels in many ways both out and about and in private, I also enjoy eating and enjoy the feeling of being full. I went to a GP to try and discuss this (as well as the heart issue) but he was exceedingly unhelpful/rude just believing I couldn't be bothered to lose the weight when that isn't the issue at all, making me reluctant to go back. I know I cannot both have my cake and eat it but I don't know who to talk too in such a niche area. I don't want to die young, nor do I wish to live the rest of my life hating my body and in turn myself (in my early 20's my BMI was 20, I was retchdly skinny as everybody wanted me to be, I also did my best to do what everybody wanted but I was unhappy with myself). I also would not even consider losing weight unless I could have the excess skin removed as I have seen the aftermath of some people of a similar weight and I wouldn't be able to bear it, however I believe the NHS could not afford this. I am unsure where I can discuss this issue, but if anyone could help me (both physically and mentally) I would be grateful.

Hi Shannon What you could do is to cut down on portion sizes.. And look at what you are eating so in other words if you are eating chips and no veg or fruit then you are not eating healthily. Look at what you can cut out.. Sugary drinks, mayonnaise, sugar in tea.. So non nutritional calories cut out... Also try to do some exercise in between your gym... Like getting off bus one stop earlier, walking around more in the house... Dancing in the house say every 20 mins.. Trick is to eat less than you need, eat food which is nutritional and move a lot more... Be determined you will get there... If its not working you need to adapt it or try add some more exercise.. Good luck

At the end of the programme there is a website link to a diet? I can't find it and I've asked my GP for diet help but to be fair they are no help whatsoever! Not just with weight, tried many doctors, I'm still struggling I need help with a proper diet plan like Christian does.. please help I have severe depression and 20 years old in 2 months I neeed to better myself to become happy after many years of sadness and awful events, please help!! xx

Shaun, I would suggest you go and see your GP and ask if you can be referred to an Occupational Therapist. They are there to help you do the things you want to do.with your life and can possibly help with adapting exercise equipment or showing you exercises that you can do :)

I would suggest you try Slimming World. it may educate you on what is 'healthy' eating. I know many people following this plan who have been confined to a wheelchair and they have still lost weight. its not a calorie controlled diet but at the same time it controls calories without you having to count them. if you need any more information just comment back and I'll tell you.
