Embarrassing Fat Bodies: Overeaters

Super Morbid Obesity

Meet Mike, a man firmly in the super morbidly obese category. He weighs 40 stone or around 256 kilograms, making him about 28 stone heavier than he’d ideally be. Mike’s BMI of 85 is amongst the highest ever seen on Embarrassing Bodies, and as he eats around 6000 calories per day, he’s unlikely to return to a healthier BMI without some help. Exercising is almost impossible, so a drastic dietary change is needed.

Dr Dawn visited Mike at home and was alarmed at Mike’s lack of mobility. Circulatory problems have left him with swollen ankles, he becomes short of breath very easily and the friction on his fatty overhangs is causing infected sores on his skin. He also suffers from sleep apnoea, a common complaint in overweight people.

The doctor’s decision is that surgery is Mike’s only viable option. It’s a calculated risk: Mike’s size makes him vulnerable to all manner of complications, and his sheer size means any operation won’t be straightforward.

Mike meets Mr Shaw Somers, an expert in the super morbidly obese and specialist bariatric surgeon. Mr Somers is prepared to perform a gastric bypass procedure, so Mike enters the hospital to undergo the op. During the operation it becomes clear that Mike has an enormous amount of excessive internal fat, and he urgently needs this treatment.

Four weeks after the operation Mike comes to visit Dr Pixie at the clinic. In that short space of time he’s lost four stone, or 10% of his total weight. He’s now eating a tiny fraction of his previous diet, and is prepared for a couple of years of hard work in exchange for a brand new life.

I'm morbidly obese with chronic body odor. Smoking pot doesn't help my weight problem, but it does help mask my incessant odor. Any other suggestions?

I have been treated for hypothyroid for 10 years. Suddenly, at the end of September, gluten started giving me serious digestive issues, so I cut it out. I lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks putting me underweight. I have continued to lose weight and it's going faster now despite eating enough to maintain a normal healthy weight. I am seeing two doctors: a GI specialist and an endocrinologist. The endo is stepping down my thyroid meds and that is helping me feel better, but has not addressed my continued weight loss. I look anorexic and it's embarrassing (BMI 16.4), plus I need new clothes as nothing fits or stays up anymore. I don't know where to go for help. Do you have a suggestion on what kind of medical assistance to seek?

Hi, i am a single mum, 34 yrs of age. I have 3 lovely kids and have lost my confidence over the years as my body kept fluctuating from a 8-22 and now 18. i have excess skin on my tummy and my armpit had swollen when i used to be pregnant and i had an operation which corrected the problem but it had no cosmetic feel as the bulge and stitch is showing. i am looking to get advise and recommendation from you about a good surgeon so i don't fall victim of a botch job as people are saying its cheaper to go abroad but i am scarred. i have checked the internet for so long but cant find any good clinic in London preferably or Ireland. Thanks in advance and eagerly expecting your reply.
