Sacral Dimple

First up in the Mobile clinic is Kate, who is worried that she has one opening too many… She’s had an extra hole above her anus since birth. This is causing Kate worry because she doesn’t know what it is or how it has been caused. Dr Christian assures her that it’s not that uncommon, and it’s caused by the fact that when we are 4-5 weeks old in the womb we all develop a tail. As a baby’s development goes on, this disappears, but sometimes there is a dimple or a hole left where the tail was. Much to the relief of Kate, as the hole is causing her no problems it is absolutely nothing to worry about.

My daughter has a sacral dimple above her bum as well and doctors did a mri and discover a tethered spinal cord. The doctor told us that dimple is sometimes a warning sign of tethered spinal cord. She had to have surgery on it when she was a year and a half. The doctors told us that if undiscovered it would of caused problems as she grew.

I have the dimple as well but from time to time it gets very sore and uncomfortable when sitting down. Any reasons why this is happening and is it a cause for concern

I was born with a perfect square formation of these and never had a problem, but have always worried what exactly they were.

Reading through various stories & being born with one, they may definitely cause more trouble in the future. I suffer with a Pilonidal sinus, on & off for more than 7 years, the pain is immense & the operation is 'barbaric' according to the surgeon i seen, so have spent many years on antibiotics. The day will come when i will need an op but will put off the invasive surgery with daily packing visits from the nurse until it really becomes a struggle with daily life. I would advise anyone who has a child born with one to have it sewn up to save incredible pain in the future!
