hi, about a week ago i started to get pain around my anus area, it got worse and i noticed a lump/bump on the edge of my anus/perenuim, so i visited my GP who recommended i go straight to the hospital as she said it was a abcess...the doctor on duty at the hopital also said it was a abcess and i waited for my op...when the surgeon came round after the op he said he couldnt find an abcess just a little clot of blood which he drained off(using a syringe i assume i got no wound?, now ime home im still in pain and whilst showering i can still feel the original lump that I went with...is it possible the surgeon(who I never even met before) missed the abcess and found a clot and thought it was "job done" or will the lump take time to go? HELP!!!!!

Hi, i have recently come out of hospital with the same thing..if you look at it and see that it may have a purple or darkish colour on top of the lump with rednes around it i would surggest you go back to the hospital straight away.. i had mine on and off for 12months and four days before i went to the hospital mine went really sore and was hard to go to the toilet.. when i got to the hospital they said it was a penanal abcess that had grown 5x5cm+ depth.. the surgeon had to op and now i have a hole that i have to see the nurse everyday to have it packed and patched which is more painful than havin it in the first place... so the sooner you go the better it will be for you.. i hope this helps and hope it gets sorted soon for you.. x

I had the same thing as the first person that answered, and I wish I had known before the op how painful it was going to be having it packed everyday until it healed, problem is because it is so close to the anus, I am still have problems with it now, had op last Oct 2011, mine keeps getting infected because of where it is, and it is so sore and unconfortable, been to see my doc and there is nothing else they can do, just have to keep it clean and dry, and because of where it is, that is very hard....I have suffered with these for a long time having both my armpits removed over 10 years ago, and for them to come back where they have around the groin area is an absolute nightmare, I wish there was something to stop them for good.....

I have had reoccurrent BV and Thrush ever since having PID at the age of 15 which developed into a tubo-ovarian abcess. Ever since this abcess I have non stop problems. I have cut out sugar, had all the antibiotics and been on lactic acid gel (balance active) and none of it has worked. My gynaecologist has no idea why it keeps reoccurring and I have now lost so many jobs and had to stop my education because of the pain I'm left in! I need help!

My son has recently finished a course of strong antibiotics for a large mouth abcess. Yesterday his chest, back and the tops of his legs came up in a rash, which isnt itchy. Could it be a delayed reaction to the antibiotics.

i think i my have a abcess groin which has now grown to the top of my inside tigh, i had a 3 week course of strong antibiotics which worked and now 2 week later it bigger bruised and very teander to touch, can u please help?

I've got HS but took ten years to diagnose. It was previously thought to be recurring abcesses. I'm struggling to understand the difference. There was a guy on the show a few weeks back with an abcess that burst from the inside, caused infection and wouldn't heel, I'm sure the Dr mentioned block folicles or sweat glands, So whats the difference? Thanks

HS or hidradonitis Supprativa is a disease of the 'Apocrine Sweat Glands'. These are the large sweat glands found in the armpits and groins. These glands don't work properly and swell up causing large painful abcesses. These abcesses may then require surgical incision and drainage. You should be referred to a dermatologist who can help you manage the condition although it cannot be cured. This is different to blocked hair follicles that can, on occasion cause abcesses if the hair is ingrowing, but if you stop shaving, waxing etc to reduce the incidence of infection it will go away. HS won't. I have had HS since 1997 and was only diagnosed in 2000 after 3 years of being told I was dirty (this was not true). My condition has had remissions and flare ups over the years but is generally well controlled although I am now having a full clearance of my right armpit in about 8 weeks time for recurrent abcesses there which sadly have not responded to treatment and are dibilitating. Please ask to be referred to a dermatologist, it really helps to talk to a professional who understands your condition and can support you. I wish you good health and hope this has helped.

i have swelling to my hip and hell of a lot of pain, but the doctors are saying its an abcess of only 5mm can you please tell me how to get rid of it?

Ive had flare up in November and felt two small lumps. I went to my GP and on the day the lump had gone he advised to come back if another lump came back. In January I was in so much pain i couldn't sit down or get comfortable. I went to the Local A&E department where they put a needle into the sinus ans drained the abcess. They put me on antibiotics however these didn't work!! I ended up going back to A&E 5 days later where they kept me in and operated that evening. After the operation I had to go to the nurse everyday to get it packed I was off work for a couple of weeks. Then about two weeks ago the abcess started to bleed again and more puss coming out!!! I ended up back in A&E due to this and other complications with my stomach. Whilst in hospital the consultant that was lookinh after me for my stomach put me on antibiotics for the abcess and it's cleared up again. I have also had 3 perianal abcesses and a anal fistular over the past two years and it's been nothing but hell! I hope this will be the last of it all and can get on with my life!!! If anyone has any tips to keep these away PLEASE let me know because my GP/Consultant hasn't given me any advise!!!

Just back from my 5th op for perianal abcess, sick of it, its been a year, yes I have chrons too and I just cant see an end to it.

Last Christmas at 19 yrs, I felt a pain in my my lower back, at first I thought it was my back, and so left it. A week later the pain had become so great that I couldn't sit down or barely walk. I saw 4 different doctors over the course of the week starting on the Monday, each one saying to leave it, try antibiotics, and see how it goes. I was not happy because it meant I was still in so much pain and could do nothing but cry as it made me feel ill. By Thursday I had been given a note to take to the hospital to get the abcess lanced. However,t hey told me they couldn't do it until the following day. That evening when my mum came up to visit, She took me to A+E as I was in unbearable pain. Over the night, the abcess burst and it was such a relief. I still had to have to abcess cleaned and packed. When I came homem I had a nurse visit every day to clean and re-pack the wound it left. This continued for 4 weeks. Eventually my family and friends took over with the cleaning. It is over a year since this happened, and I still get slight pain in the scar and itching which can't be satisfied. However, I wish I had gone to the doctor sooner as the operation left me unable to sit down for weeks on. I spent Christmas day lying on the floor!

i just got my first one 2 weeks ago and i have had the cut and drain surgery.it looks like its healing pretty good and im off antibiotoics...fingers crossed. anyways im here to give you some advice...get laser removal on the area and get rid of all that hair around it...it suppose to really work...try that. im going to get the laser as soon as mine heals.

Hi, I'm a 23 year old female and am wondering if anybody can help me. I had surgery in 2007 and 2008 for 'excision and drainage' of a pilonidal sinus. The wound was left to heal from the bottom (ha!) up and I had it packed every day by a nurse. I thought after 2 operations my ordeal would finally be over. HOWEVER it seems like it has come back. I have a constant dull ache in my lower back/legs/bum. The scar from my other operations is raised into a huge lump and is sore and itchy. The area around it is red and sore. I went to my doctors today - she gave me antibiotics and told me to come back in a few days if it gets worse, for emergency surgery. She said there is no abcess there but she can see a small hole (which is the sinus). What if I DON'T get an abcess but this HORRIFIC pain does not go away after taking antibiotics? Surely I need surgery anyway? I can't go to work or drive my car. If anyone has experienced the same thing or has any advice, PLEASE reply to this comment. Thank you

Hi, I had an abcess on my bottom 4 years ago. They removed the pus, but the abcess got very big, and surgery was a necessity. I also had bandages and many courses of antibiotics after leaving the hospital. Pus was still forming and coming out. After 6 weeks I went to the surgeon, he looked at it, and said it would be fine soon. It is now 4 years later and although the hole has become smaller over time, I still have a daily problem of discharge from the hole, sometimes pus, sometimes not. My doctor recommended going back to the same surgeon for the operation again, but said there is no guarantee it will be any better. I don't have any faith in the operation as it didn't work the last time. The doctor said I will probably be left with this the rest of my life

Hi, I'm 33 and have been having a similar problem for the last 10 months. I had an abcess that looked tragically horrible in January of 2013. It healed perfectly but I have a pin like hole that is still open by my left nipple. It slightly drains a clear fluid (no odor) but just won't heal. From time to time it tries to swell up again. It sometimes can scab over but when the fluid builds it will open back up and nothing seems to help. I was super worried at first but since I work in the medical field I know that this is not the worst case scenario! I do hope to rectify this situation at some point.

I have a hole on my left breast I'm still experiencing pain with even the slightest touch ,pus and blood was coming out for two days before it was a hole and I'm scared gas hell to go to the hospital

I cannot diagnose you and it is important that you receive medical advice asap. But it sound similar to my condition. I felt pressur behind the anus that was not relieved by opening my bowels but actually felt a bit worse. I had an abcess (causing the pressure) and an opening into my anal passage linked to the abscess by a fistula. When I opened my bowels a small piece of poo would get inside the hole and reinfect the abcess, hence the pain after.

I am now 57 and I have suffered with HS since I was 17. This started with a pilonidal sinus, then after 6 operations to try to clear this i started getting the abcess's under my arms and in my groin. I have had in the region of 15 operations under my arms to clear the abcess's but that only works for a short time. These have been VERY painfull over the years. All I can hope is that one day they will get a treatment that works for all sufferers.

I am a 65yr old male. First symptoms appeared in July 2011. Swelling and pain around the anus in the perineum area.Visited doctor and referred to hospital under the urology dept. Abcess erupted in August and admitted to hospital on 23rd. Sent home with antibiotics and appointment for MRI scan. Referred eventually to colon rectal dept. First operation laid open the abcess and no fistula found in early November.Needed packing daily. Had follow up within 1 month then again a month later. During this time I knew the abcess was returning. On second visit to surgeon new appointment booked for second op. Just had a seton placed in anal fistula on 25th Jan 2012. No idea how long this may take to heal and unsure of amount of discomfort Im supposed to be experiencing. Hope your son is getting his condition treated and that it is getting better.

I started with a perianal abcess that was drained and then packed daily for two months, the abcess returned I whent through the same procedure again,THIS PROBLEM WHENT ON FOR A FURTHER EIGHT OPERATIONS,in the end my surgeon said the only way forward would be a tempory colostomy, this was done,it worked, back in to the theatre I whent, bag removed, two days later I felt very poorly, all the internal sutchures/stitchers broke down, septasemia peritinitas started, into intensive care for seven weeks,in hospital six months 18 months later fit and well, colostomy now permanent,I cope well, and a reversel can be done but I will live with the colostomy and anal fistula, please note this sorry tale is very uncommon,if a reader has a colostomy operation pending or a problem living with a pouch mail me and I will pass on some usefull information on how to live with this type of condition

please i need help. im 31 yrs old and i have the most disgusting teeth, all through my teens i had perfect white straight teeth until i developed an abcess somewhere in my jaw .after numerous visits to my dentist at the time and several courses of antibiotics later my dentist then told me that if the abcess didnt go away then i would have to have surgary. his exact words were he would have to slice and peel back my gum then drill into the jaw to get at the abcess direct. well being young and not liking the dentist visits that was the last time i ever went . im now paying for it big time, its got to a point now where im in so much pain i bairly get 5 hours sleep every night. all i want to do is be able to smile at my 6 month old daughter with confidence and get a good nights sleep without taking sleeping pills and pain killers. my teeth have crumbled due to grinding in my sleep, along with heavy drinking and smoking a few years ago , i have bits of teeth or half teeth which are black and most probably dead, gum disease which i think is getting worse. you would say that its my own fault for drinking and smoking, but i did go through a bad seven year relationship where i ended up turning to the bottle to cope with everything. thankfully thats all in the past and im in a loving relationship now and have a beutifull daughter together. but the current state of my teeth now would shock anybody who seen them and i need to deal with this some how, i still get an abcess every other week and pain killers just arent working anymore. about 2 years ago i had an abcess that got so bad it kept me awake for 52 hours before i got the courage to go to an emergency dentist at the hospital, even after that visit i walked outside an vomited everywhere. call me soft but dentist terrify me. for the past couple of years since then my teeth have just gotten worse, it doesnt matter how much pain i go through when i brush them use mouth wash or anything like that i know i need to have them taken out. but theres a few reasons why i havent done this, one every dentist ive tried to register with are not taking anymore patients. i cant afford to go private becouse im on a low income which im trying to support my daughter girlfriend and myself with. and lastly i hate the idea of false teeth at my age. i know i have to get my backside to a dentist to sort this but i need help, no dentist will register me i cant afford private and if i keep visiting the emergency dentist at the hospital im just gona end up with no teeth at all. if anyone can help or advise please do id be more than gratefull. i would realy love to be able to smile again.

please i need help. im 31 yrs old and i have the most disgusting teeth, all through my teens i had perfect white straight teeth until i developed an abcess somewhere in my jaw .after numerous visits to my dentist at the time and several courses of antibiotics later my dentist then told me that if the abcess didnt go away then i would have to have surgary. his exact words were he would have to slice and peel back my gum then drill into the jaw to get at the abcess direct. well being young and not liking the dentist visits that was the last time i ever went . im now paying for it big time, its got to a point now where im in so much pain i bairly get 5 hours sleep every night. all i want to do is be able to smile at my 6 month old daughter with confidence and get a good nights sleep without taking sleeping pills and pain killers. my teeth have crumbled due to grinding in my sleep, along with heavy drinking and smoking a few years ago , i have bits of teeth or half teeth which are black and most probably dead, gum disease which i think is getting worse. you would say that its my own fault for drinking and smoking, but i did go through a bad seven year relationship where i ended up turning to the bottle to cope with everything. thankfully thats all in the past and im in a loving relationship now and have a beutifull daughter together. but the current state of my teeth now would shock anybody who seen them and i need to deal with this some how, i still get an abcess every other week and pain killers just arent working anymore. about 2 years ago i had an abcess that got so bad it kept me awake for 52 hours before i got the courage to go to an emergency dentist at the hospital, even after that visit i walked outside an vomited everywhere. call me soft but dentist terrify me. for the past couple of years since then my teeth have just gotten worse, it doesnt matter how much pain i go through when i brush them use mouth wash or anything like that i know i need to have them taken out. but theres a few reasons why i havent done this, one every dentist ive tried to register with are not taking anymore patients. i cant afford to go private becouse im on a low income which im trying to support my daughter girlfriend and myself with. and lastly i hate the idea of false teeth at my age. i know i have to get my backside to a dentist to sort this but i need help, no dentist will register me i cant afford private and if i keep visiting the emergency dentist at the hospital im just gona end up with no teeth at all. if anyone can help or advise please do id be more than gratefull. i would realy love to be able to smile again.

I have had hs since i was 20ish, usual story bad dr didnt know what it was and just fobbed me off acne tablets that was until i demanded to see another dr who promptly sent me to a & e for an incision and drainage not a cure but what a relief i had an abcess the size of an egg in the fold of the back of my neck. After that the usual stuff again more antibiotics for over a year and then ROACCUTANE a hospital ony prescribed drug this is a nasty drug that dries out your skin and makes you even more depressed then you already were !!! Do not take it is my advice.I was then referred to st andrews plastic surgery centre in Broomfield where they can once the abcess has gone cut you open and take out the infected skin/hair having had 4 done on my neck i can say that none of them have returned !!! I do still suffer with them on my inner thighs and waist line and bum cheeks/crack but they are bearable just and using SUDACREM the nappy rash cream seems to help keep inflamation down as does PANOXL an acne cream. As for antibiotics i will be honest and admit one did really help me it was CLINDAMYCIN it dried them out completley and was very good and if i was to take any antibiotics again for it i would request them. And anybody who has this please go to your doc and get some help with it. Good luck to all of you who have this terrible condition my thoughts are with you.
