I have a large compound nevus birthmark on my arm which has cause severe confidence issues for many years now. I am now 20 years of age and feel I am old enough to do something about it. I've looked into laser treatment but all of these treatments are costly. I've heard that people have had their birthmarks tattooed over. I want to know if this is possible for my type of birthmark, besides not being able to see the birthmark are their any physical dangers to tattooing over the birthmark? Thanks.

Hiya Claire. Im 15 now, and at birth i had a fleshy lumb on my leg, it has since changed over the years, and has gone a blue like colour, with its size expanding at the same rate of its colour change. my mother like yourself, was concerned with it, and i have been to the doctors on several occasions, and it all boils down to the fact that its just who i am, there is treatment available on the private system (laser treatment) i researched this and for me it starts at around £250 depending on the size, and colour. if your still concernd, i would advise you to contact your doctor, and get a proffesional opinion. i hope this helped :).

I think it depends on the kind of birthmark that you have. Although I don't know anyone with a birthmark on their breast I've known people with birthmarks to get laser treatments and others to be given creams to lighten the skin. I have quite a large birthmark on my stomach which I would love to get removed but I haven't been to my doctor about it so I don't know all the options there are. If you get any more information about how birthmarks can be removed please reply to this message and let me know, I hope I helped a little bit.

hi i was born with a birthmark in my eye. when i was younger it was a dark purplish blob on the white part of my left eye. As i got older it has spread to the left side of my face :( I've even had a lot of people think i got beat up! I've tried derma blend but if i didn't have this birthmark i would have really nice skin! I'm wondering if there is anything to get rid of it or am i just gonna always be so self conscience about it?

Hi, I have quite a large birthmark on my left side of my back in the kidney area, it's like a big red crater in my skin, it's like the skin hasn't grown in the area of the mark and the veins can clearly be seen, I was born with this and although its very sensitive and can't be touched its never really been a problem until recently when I have started getting sharp stabbing pains in the area that are really painful and make me jump, I have no idea when it will happen or when it will stop. I have googled this type of birthmark and cannot find any reference to it whatsoever, any ideas or comments????

Go get it looked at! Any change in color or shape means its critical you have it looked at ASAP! I had a birthmark on my cheek that was so dark it was almost blue, they said it was benign but removed it anyway. It doesn't hurt to have them taken off either, the dr. will numb the area completely and cut it off. You won't feel a thing, except the shot to numb it. So don't waste time, go now!

It isn't exactly acne but I have a massive birthmark on my left hip and it is really embarrassing. How can I hide it?

hey, i'm nearlly 14 too and i get spots around my mouuth and chin i'd advise you too steam your fave all you have to do is boil the kettle and put the water in a boil then place your face over the boil. this cleances your face and helps to take the swelling down. Also toothpaste, QUINODERm (can be bought in pharmacy) or sudocreme these cremes really helped me! i hope i helped .....

cover it with a plaster, sounds stupid but just say its a cut, wear big pants(not recommended) you can now get treatment to remove birthmarks and i did it but the scaring is something to worry about if you birthmark is very bid then i wouldnt recomend it cause the scarring might not fade BE Proud of yourself just because others might think its bad it makes you you! dont be ashamed!!

theatrical makeup its thicker than normal foundation

Is it on the foreskin or the glans? If the foreskin, circumcision would remove it, but if you chose that route, find a competent urologist to do the op. If the glans is affected, you'll probably have to adapt your attitude to it. It isn't dangerous to anyone else, and many would find it completely acceptable in a partner they otherwise found attractive. Possibly, even on the glans, some kinds of birthmark could be lasered away without affecting function of the part.

well the thing is I'm already circumcised when I was little. The birthmark kinda look like the map of some sort as bis as nail on a thumb.

Hi umm I am 23 years old an to me that kinda thing is cute for me that would be the spot that I'd just play wit like just rub an feel it all the time..just saying don't worry about some girls like that

Hi, my name's holly. I know its not a mole, but i have quite a big birthmark on my left leg. It's getting to nearly be summer now, and i love wearing shorts but i can't because of this birthmark. Obviously it's been like this since i've been born, but it does seem to be getting bigger and bigger. It's really making me self-concious and when i go out, all my mates are wearing shorts and short skirts but i can't wear shorts or anything shorter than just above my knee because of this birthmark. I'd really love to know if there's anyway you can get a birthmark removed? it might sound silly but i'm desperate to find out because i hate it and want to get rid of it as soon as i can. Please help me! thanks, love holly.

Hi Kimberley, I have a birthmark on my face too and can relate to some of what you say. I've had laser treatment too, actually until quite recently (I'm now 26). If you'd like some support and advice on treatment, camouflage makeup, or just to talk with others then I work for the Birthmark Support Group charity and we can provide this for you - we also have a Facebook group. www.birthmarksupportgroup.org.uk https://www.facebook.com/groups/74850600019/

Hi. I'm 14, I have a large birthmark on my right leg. I have had it since i was 3 weeks of age. It started off just on my ankle but has now grown to cover up to mid thigh . Having this birthmarks has lowered my confidence a lot, as I get teased about it. I go to school in mid summer wearing stockings as I'm scared people are looking at it. Depending on the weather it changes colours. It changes from light pinky brown to reds, purples and blues. The area on my leg in which the birthmark is. Is extremely sensitive. Any ideas on what could make it less noticeable and wether it will stop growing will be much appreciated.

My son is 12 years old and his birthmark (which is on the inner side of his leg above his knee)was scanned by a specialist when he was 4 years old. The GP said to come back when he is older to consider removal by surgery. The treatment on the show (injecting the veins) seems more appropriate. My son is experiencing pain and intermittent bleeding from the surface of the birthmark, it is also growing in size. Another worrying aspect is that sometimes it disappears almost completely but at other times is enlarged, purple and painful to touch. My son is often asked about it and is now embarrassed when he does PE or swims at school. I've even had teachers phone me to ask about it. Is there a right age for this condition to be treated.

Apologies for the same reply as above, but the same would apply: Hi, yes there is often treatment available for birthmarks but to begin with it will need to be diagnosed by a specialist before they can tell you the options. The place to start is an appointment with your GP and ask for a referral. There are other options available to help too, such as camouflage makeup which is also available on the NHS for birthmarks. I also work for the Birthmark Support Group charity and we provide information, advice and support. We have a new, updated website due to launch soon and an active Facebook group. www.birthmarksupportgroup.org.uk
