I'm a 40yo male and had IBS since about 16. I've managed to control it mostly by diet. I still get some stomach cramps and some constipation but the most annoying thing is the bloating. About 10 mins after I eat something my stomach gets about 6" bigger and goes brick hard. It looks like I'm pregnant. Has anyone come across anything to reduce the bloating.

I think I may suffer from IBS but is unsure. I get severe bloating after eating that it looks like I am pregnant! It's not every day that it is as extreme but there is always some degree of bloating. I also suffer from really bad wind, all the time, day and night, where ever I am and sometimes when in public I have to hold it in and this creates even more bloating and discomfort and my tummy makes noises as my body 'moves around the wind'! Also, I can go without going to the bathroom for up to 3-4 days and then I will have a build up that will be fairly constipated and I will have a suddern urge to go and it will be painful to pass stool. There is some bleeding from time to time but I think this is from a cut I go from having gastroenteristis two years ago. I'm sick of looking like I'm pregnant and having to wear baggy tops to cover my big belly. I know I'm not putting on weight because although I'm not fat, I've definitely not put on any other weight and I do eat a balanced diet. If anyone has any information to pass on, I would be very grateful!

I have the exact same problem. Usually the bigger or hotter the meal i eat the worse it gets. However it also happens when i eat my lunch (a corned beef and salad sandwich on wholemeal bread and a yogurt). The only thing i have been able to do is eat slowly and don't eat large meals. However, even then sometimes it still does not work. It is a mystery to me as well. I do not think it is IBS though. If it is, it is a very mild form. If you find a cure, please let me know.

im 29 and i'm convinced i have IBS. i have bloating and/or abdominal pain after most meals and my bowels are either really loose (not diarrheoa) or constipation.i also get terrible wind my partner is very unsympathetic,he calls it imaginary bowel syndrome!! i know ibs may not be a serious condition but its a nightmare to live with..ive learnt to live with the pain but its the bloating which really gets me down. i would like to get it diagnosed from my gp but i wont go near the surgery if it means needing a camera put up my bum to diagnose it. does anybody know how its diagnosed???

My Gp diagnosed me 5 years ago same symptoms as yourself, i had an internal examination with the GP which took under 30 seconds and a little discomfort. Based on symptoms he diagnosed me as there was no bleeding or weight loss declined to do further investigations i.e camera etc, i have taken colofac every am and buscopan when required which really helps with the bloating and pain, both medication can be brought over the counter and the pharmacist is very helpful making sure your medication doesnt clash, i also use imodium plus, to help with loose stools and it also helps with cramping. Windeze also helps with wind!!

it could be ibs. also get checked for coeliac disease as these are also symptoms of that. it can be serious if untreated.

I suffer from severe bloating. I would have a lot of gas but don't have any problems with going to the toilet. No diarrhoea or constipation. I have quite normal bowel movement. However my doctor give me tablets for ibs. How can he know I have ibs with no test and only symptom is bloating ? The tablets didn't work and It's getting really annoying . I'm constantly getting asked if I'm pregnant and feel like my stomach is going to explode it gets that big and hard and really uncomfortable . It gets worst with certain foods like bread or alcohol. I just wish I could find out what the problem was as my doctor said there's nothing more they can do which is I know is not true

Hi, this just really reminded me of what I felt like before I cut dairy and wheat out of my diet. Dairy, I can eat in small amounts, but everytime I go near wheat, my stomach is so bloated it feels as if something has grown inside, and if I press it, i can feel myself pushing all the air around and it gurgles so much everyone nearby can hear. Perhaps your intolerant to something? maybe keep a food diary, is the alcohol beer? I cannot drink beer or eat bread as exactly that happens to me. Perhaps its sulphates? I have a colleague who has a similar reaction to anything with them in. It probably is a case if finding what triggers it and cutting these down or out of your diet.

I have been dealing with ibs for about a year. I usually get flare ups every few weeks or so, or as soon as I have spicy or greasy food especially Chinese! However for the past month I have been dealing with constant pain, not one that comes and goes on different days. It is either very crampy on the mornings and nights where I have to rush to the toilet and during the day there is a constant dull ache that never goes??? Is this normal! Also, Usually my bloating comes and goes but the past month it has never seem to gone down!!!! It looks like I'm pregnant or something it's so worrying, does anyone else deal with bloating that just won't go? I have been getting major back spasms that are quite worrying and chest pains? Any one else?

Hi im 31 years old and had 2 children and came of Depo in October last year because of bloating(the depo was not the cause as I had this symptom before & decided to clearmyself from any medications) I have not had a period since,I seen my g.p withregard to the bloating where she found blood in my urine so sent me for an ultrasond which showd to be a cyst in my kidney, I was assured there was nothing to worry about, I saw my g.p again a month later where she still found blood in my urine so sent my for a cystascope,--everything was fine with that, and blood tests were fine which I believe was a full blood count and thiroid function, now to months from that I still have no period since October last year but now aware of a pain in my left groin which is intermittant during the day what I can only describe as a wave of pressure, Is this related to my problem? Should I be concerned that I have had no period yet and the new symptom of groin pain?

Hi, I feel like this a lot and find having a cup of peppermint tea helps. I tend to keep a teabag in my handbag or a cup alredy brewed to relieve me of the bloating and making me feel a lot more comfortable. (M&S) ones work best for me!

I had sex for the first time on saturday. The condom which we used was fine so there cannot really be any way of me being pregnant. But I have felt weird ever since, abdominal pains and bloating, I just don't understand? I really need some help :(

Hi there, I'm unsure as to whether I have IBS or not. I have constant bloating, everyday and when I go to the toilet it changes between diarrhoea and constipation. It is more the bloating that is really starting to annoy me because it makes me look much larger than I actually am and I constantly have wind that can be really embarrassing, which only makes the bloating worse. Any ideas? Thanks : )

Hi Chele, I'm 40 and have been suffering the same troubles as you. My tummy can swell up to to stupid sizes, almost 2 dress sizes. There is no pattern or trigger either. I have bought some nice maternity stuff to accommodate it. The sickness is a rarer part to it so I'm told and like you I feel wiped out. We are just special. Ha Ha Tina.

get checked out for COELIAC DISEASE x

Hi I am 40 and have been having ibs type problems for over 20 years now and been to the doctors many times with no joy. I haven't actually been diagnosed with ibs and I'm not sure if that's better or worse. I've noticed recently that my stomach seems better during my period but the rest of the time bloating, wind and tiredness is the 'norm'. I have found peppermint tea helps ease the bloating but other than that I just put up with it! Advances in medical science ehh? Good to read I'm not the only one x

I had been suffering from constipation and bloating for over a year after having had an operation on my pancreas. My GP put it down to scarring, and prescribed movicol and domperidon, which initially worked but not for long. I then read somewhere that magnesium supplements can help. So I now take soluble magnesium twice a day, and so far (3 weeks and fingers crossed) it is working wonders. Bloating gone, constipation gone and I feel well enough to go to the gym. Sport also helps.

i would push to see a specialist gyn. I know in Glasgow we have the Sandyford clinic which are specialist with this kind of thing. the bloating would suggest something like endimetriosis. the bloating can cause hemeroids (i appologise for spelling by the way im dyslexic) What i hadnt noticed when i was being tested for my vulvodynia, was that I had my smear done and my swabs for std's was that no one looked. in 4 months of testing no one looked. make someone look, no matter how uncomfortable it is.

I have severe bloating in the stomach area and for years have taken Bisocodil to empty my bowls. Reading other stories of people diagnsed with IBS my problem is bloating to the point of several inches round the waist of air. I am eating regularly and exercise regularly, some days whilst exercising I would burp a lot which gives me releif, I feel heavy most of the time I dont drink or smoke. Can anyone help ? "Diagnose"

IBS, Irritable Bowel Syndrome am amazed after watching this progamme routinely that there's never been any mention about Papaya seeds and honey, though it's a proven killer of intestinal parasite. There seems to be signs that it helps suffers of IBS with bloating etc. 1/4 cup papaya seeds with one tablespoon of honey on empty stomach is how I take mine, try it for 10 days straight. That bloating feeling will go at about day 3,4 along with excessive gas.

Mostly young people on here and I know where they are coming from. Had a bad period around 28 years old but with high fibre diet smaller meals it calmed enough to lead a normal life. But bad days do happen and I could work all day or nights ok. But after walking home sometimes I struggled to reach toilet. But since 50 I,m now 57 I struggle with rich heavy meals. Restaurant meals where I have to drive more than 1 hour. Cannot eat late and toilet is growing more irregular with intense feeling of having to go but 95% time no result or really bad diarrhea lasting several hours. It's got to stage I,m Almost scared to eat. Several ct scans, cameras up and down, tests for gluten and cialis, Addison's. Everything appears normal with a few polyps but nothing that should cause the discomfort. I,ve tried laxatives, on doctors advice to make bowel work more regular. But pain relief is never long lasting. Although if I can get to sleep quite quickly usually I,m ok for a longer time next day Imodium when I need to travel or not sure of toilet availability.

Hi my name is Carl I am a 28 year old male, I got IBS around 2 years ago. My symptoms started off as going to the toilet a lot more than the average person and severe cases of diarrhoea. but around 6 months ago they changed and now I am bloated almost everyday! The bloating is making me really depressed as i have gained nearly two stone in weight not been able to work out, Every time I workout I go cold and clammy, find it hard to breathe, have high blood pressure and nausea. all symptoms of positional asphyxia. As soon as i get these symptoms I can no long work out, sometimes I cant even sit down without feeling like this as if the bloating is pushing on my diaphragm. I even have stretch marks across my stomach as a result of the bloating, Sort of like some woman do when they are pregnant possibly because most of the time I actually look pregnant. I have been to the doctors over and over and they say there is nothing they can do. If there is any information anyone can give me as it is making me depressed I would be grateful!!! Thank Carl

I suffered from constant mouth ulcers from the age of 10. From the age of 16 I also suffered from bloating pain and trapped wind. After MANY visits to doctors with no relief I stopped eating bread, pastry and pasta at the age of 40! Within a week the bloating and pain had stopped and I have not had a mouth ulcer now for 6 years. Why is diet never mentioned on these programmes???

Hi Emily, Im 19, Things I find helpful for settling down my crohns is a sort of water based diet, I try to eat soups alot and water melon etc, find that it rests my stomach for a bit which reduces the pain and bloating alot for me. Although obviously make sure your still getting all the vits and stuff. Also I avoid fizzy drinks stops bloating a bit too. Good luck with the picolax, hate the stuff!

i had diahrear-/constapation/like i have not fully emptied myself, bloating especially when i eat, constant aneamia, tiedness ,dizzyness, gastro reflux ,bones feel tired, joints click-wrist,knee,shoulders.I have now been told that i have ceoliac disease, hiatus hearnia and am going for a dexta scan, but i don't know why i am bloating so much when i only eat a small amount of food, like 1 gluton free toast and a cup of tea ,the top part of my stomache comes out about 4 inches and by the end of the day it is realy out and people think i am 6 months pregnant..even my 7 year old eats more than me.please can someone help me ?

I have had IBS for many years and a year ago exactly I gave up smoking.. 3 months later I developed sever bloating (to the point people asked when my baby was due!)pain in the lower left side of my stomach and severe constipation,it really feels like my intestines have doubled in size? eventually I had a very painful Flexible Sig. done and they confirmed DD and that was all that has been done. I am in constant pain and anything and everything makes the pain, bloating worse as well as everything that is high in fibre, that is the worst possible thing for me. I'm really struggling on how to cope with this as my GP doesn't really take this as seriously as I would like. I was 40 when I was diagnosed. Any advice would be really appreciated - Thanks all.
