Last week I had quite a lot of blood in my stools for three days. I have had no more but have been going to the toilet more frequently and the stools change from soft to hard. I feel a bit faint and tired. What could this be? I am in my 20's.

If someone can answer me please: 3 year old child has constipation for long time like 6 months and hard stools. he had red blood on stools but we started giving him much more fluids and the last time stools came out with no blood at all and softer but still rocky and stuck together. when I check his tummy I can feel like a tumours on left side of tummy very low (colon I think). after last bowel movement I did not find that like things like tumours in his tummy, but after one day I can feel it again. Could it be very serious like cancer? our appointment for this with doctor in hospital will be just after 2 month. child never complains about pain, even when I check tummy, is happy, active, but scared to do poo and says pain is there to do poo. what do you think does it look just like haemorrhoids ....? outside everything is ok, but must be inside.

Since March 2010, my bowel habits havn't been normal: constipation and diarrhea and then back to normal, not so much as diarrhea but more loose stools as i don't go frequently. Also been having some dull pains, ometimes quick sharp ones, around the sides and top mid of my abdomen, sometimes after ive eaten. From around 7 months ago my stools have been coming out quite tarry, along with being loose, but sometimes theyve been normal with black-ish/tarry bits in them the size of a smartie. Went to the doctor 2 months ago and got a blood test and was given mebeverene tablets and fybagel sachets. Blood test showed that ive an ever-so-slightly low rbc count and was given folic acid tablets. Then a month ago i saw red smudges along the mucus on stools, ive had mucus in stools since march 2010 as well, maybe longer. Went to the doctor, got a rectal exam there and them and he diagnosed IBS and was given mebeverene again. The symptoms are still therte and i think it might be more than IBS. Stomach's hurting right now. Anyone have anything similar? thank you for reading.

Sounds like chrons get your gp to refer you to a hospital gastro clinic there is treatment and you can live a normal life.

For the past 6 months I have been having pain in my upper abdomen and throughout I have periods where I been having pain when passing stools. There is no change to my stools when the pain first starts then I feel the need to pass a stool frequently, up to 5 times a day or even more. Sometimes there is blood but rarely. Lately I have been seeing what I can describe as bits of fleshy tissue in the bowel after. I have been told I have gastritis and gallbladder polyps. Is is linked in anyway?

hey i suffer from ulcerative colitis and i had all them symptoms when i first got diagnosed but it did take a while for the doctors to pick it up, could be something else but on a similar line but you seriously need to go back to doctors and explain and demand something more to be done as its not nice feeling like that!! ..

I most of the time have normal size bowel movements. But sometimes there thin. I was told by my doctor when she took a bowel smear that there was blood. I don't believe that only because when I get tested it's after I wiped myself to hard and caused myself to bleed so I think it comes on to her glove and then gets on my stool. But I'm rechecking it at home with one of those kits you take home and bring back to the doctors to be checked. I don't see any blood in my stool. My stools are not black, or white , or yellow so dose it sound like I really have blood or not?

I have suffered with constipation for quite some time now. My stools are almost always hard and difficult to pass, and I tend to poo three or less times a week. I have recently become aware that before I need to relieve myself I can feel the stools through the back of my vaginal wall? Applying a gentle (painless) pressure to this helps me a lot in passing stools. Unfortunately because of my busy schedule at the moment I cannot go to the doctors for around another month, but I still want to try and solve this problem. Is there any way I can without being prescribed anything?

Look up the SCD (specific carbohydrate diet) lots of networks and things on the Internet and also a book by Ellain Gottshall called breaking the vicious cycle. If you are not severe enough for surgery this could help you before that happens. I've had the surgery and I'm going to try the diet further down the line. Good luck

I have had sharp pains and bleeding when passing stools for over two years now, what could it be and what can i do? sometimes its a tiny spec of blood, but sometimes its quite a lot - i am 17

Should stools appear a similar colour for the majority of the time as I have had light coloured stools, very dark stools soft stools, hard stools, stools that looked like a pile of wet concrete (apart from the colour of course) small lumps/balls (like rabbit droppings) and quite large stools which almost block the toilet. Bright red blood in the bowl and dark blood in my stools. I have had everything up or down examining my insides and had the camera capsule but nothing was found to suggest why I was experiencing these symtoms. I now don't even ask my GP as I feel it is a waste of her and my time.

You should not get blood in your stools with IBS, it could be something serious like chrons (My brother has this and he had blood in his stools, really bad cramps, loose stools and ended up in hospital really ill after the doctor kept saying it was IBS because it gets worse until treated), however there are a number of possible conditions, so you should make an appointment to see your doctor again.

Hi im 23 and im in alot of pain when going to the toilet (stools) it feels like ripping or splitting and my stools are very hard and almost that of rabbit droppings but alot larger. My son is only 12 and has always suffered with constipation but recently he says he is bleeding after passing stools, it is small amount of fresh bright red blood in the toilet, he used to have blood in his stools when he hadnt gone for a few days but i am concerned now. It would be an automatic reaction to bring him straight to the doctor however as my son has aspergers syndrome I have always tried to avoid any stressful situations which this would indeed be.??

Hi. I am 52 and I'm sure I am going through some symptoms of menopause. My usual regular periods are now irregular. They can be a couple of months apart but usually always last a week. Sometimes I may have another full weeks period after just 2 weeks. They are heavy and sometimes very painful for the first few days. I often feel very dizzy. However my real question is, is it normal to experience blood loss from my bottom too. This period has arrived after 40 days. 2 days before it started I noticed blood in my stools. My stools were normal to loose. I cannot put it down to straining. My stools were also increased. I am slightly worried and would be grateful for some guidance.

Hi,after reading about your problem...the first thing would be to get checked and referred by your GP to hosp specialist. This to check any medical issues. This will prob take time, so meanwhile, avoid dairy products and replace with "dairy free" foods to start with. Avoid cows milk in drinks and cereals....replace with either rice milk or soya. Also, avoid milk choc...plain or dark is better but only tiny amount. Just by doing this, it will reduce your wind and bloating. Few years ago I paid for a nutritionist to do food and drink intolerance test on me....it showed I had few intolerance's. Once changed diet, was much better. I (and lots of other People) have reaction to food additives (eg. Sulphites) too. Worth getting checked.

i'm 15 and for as long as i remember my stools have been hard and difficult to pass. i occasionally get red dots of blood on the stools. should i be worried?

it might be piles get your gp to confirm

thanks sarah i will but scared

Hi if the blood is bright red it's fresh blood. Sometimes if you are a bit constipated & have trouble passing stools you can incur a tear or scratch inside your bowel. Could you have been a bit dehydrated? Black stools can sometimes suggest internal problems. It might be worth keeping a diary of this & what you eat/drink. If it becomes a regular thing it may need looking into. It might be worth self examining your bowel first as you may be able to tell if it is scratched or if there are any bumps from doing this. (in case you have cysts or polyps).

I have problems moving my bowels I can go up to 4/5 days without having a motion and there is blood in the stools. I have been into hospital to check for piles, which I don't have and they recommended I try to keep the stools soft by eating better which I have tried to do but I still have the same issue. Can you suggest something to try and make me more regular? Thanks

When I watched the show, the doctor mentioned not being worried about blood in the toilet bowl, as it is most often a tear and that black stools indicate IBD (Crohn's disease). I found this misleading as I have IBD (Ulcerative colitis) and I don't have black stools (Colitis is localised in the bowel anyway) but there is a lot of blood in the toilet bowl when I am having a flare up.

I have been told that I have a small pile since having my children which I am able to pull in with my muscles when it protrudes. But recently I had a lot more blood when passing even soft stools, the blood will actually drip out and sometimes contains very small clots. I don't have any itching or pain normally, but always experience pain when passing any size of stools. Is this something more serious or just down to the pile

Hi AJ. When I was about your age something like that happened to me. Wondering if you have any mucus too when going? If the blood is bright red it is fresh, dark red could indicate an internal bleed. Sometimes anal fissures can occur from irritable bowel problems, which could mean your insides have taken a bit of a bashing & caused a tear. However there are many different reasons for bleeding & when it is causing distress it is best to get it checked out. The dr may want to do the finger examination but you can just ask for a referal if you prefer. However you will probably need to get an internal done. It's a bit embarrasing but 15 mins or less of embarrassment is better than the problem getting worse.

Im a 23 year old female an have had a wierd bowel habbit for about 8 weeks now i started off having browny/orangy mucus from my bottom after pooing then my stool started looking orangy brown, then i had one pale stool and now my stools are light brown, i did experience a bit of constipation and loose stools i have been really worried as im pretty sure my stools were dark brown before, although the mucus seems to have stopped for a week or so i still have light brown stools sometimes with darker brown round bits in it, i have never ever seen blood though what should i do? Is this likely colon cancer? I also havent been constipated in a while

I have a similar thing. I have had it for three years. I have been to the doctors twice ,but they just frown and look at me as aif I am mad. I did insist on a test for poo in the stool but it came back as clear. Please can Dr Christian reply to this as this has been worrying me also for some time. I am usually constipated. My poos are dark brown with a white mucus, orange stringy stuff and some times what looks like excess dark brown bile. GPs only seem concerned about diarrhea and bleeding.

To unnamed and Angela, Snap it sounds very similar and had have the same experience even told they couldn't justify hospital scans! after putting it down as ibs.. which i don't think it is.. however after 8mths of this there now referred me to a hospital consultant ..but still to have a date. .. and Angela don't worry as your young its unlikely to be cancer

I'm 16 and a half years old, i took a trip to the loo (31/10/13) and i noticed my stools we're a little bit painful. i ignored it, until i went to flush. i thought it was my sight that was playing a trick on me, but as i got closer, i noticed blood. i went into full blown panic mode!!! i started crying because i thought i had cancer. so i went to tell my mum, who said that because I'm slightly constipated , i might have ruptured my Anal hole. so i checked Boots webMD, and they think its an Anal Fissure. i've never had blood in my stools before, and im really shaking in fear. please help!!!!! :(

Hey, don't panic, panicking is not healthy in any shape or form! :) As I said to Rachel, and hope it helps: Don't be scared, that probably is nothing very concerning - bright red blood is good but still, you should see your GP as soon as you can, that will at least put your mind to ease. In the meantime: drink plenty of fluids and if you feel constipated (or hard stools), start taking some fibre supplements until you feel the situation has improved - if you have a fissure/piles, hard stools will only make it worse. Try glycerine suppositories before you go to the loo, you really need soft stools so that the area can heal. My colorectal surgeon got me to wash the area 2x a day with a aqueous cream (you can get it for cheap at a chemist or supermarket and, until you see your GP, try a barrier cream (nappy rash treatment or emollient cream - a bit around an a bit inside). You really need to a) make stools soft, b) hydrate the area so that the skin is stronger and more elastic and c) protect the skin to prevent further tearing - and see your GP!!

Hi for the past week I've been having what I we would describe a knife like pain in my anus mainly when I have a bowl movement it lasts for about 10 seconds.when I'm actually passing stools I have no pain. Seems to be at its worst in the morning. I've looked and I don't appear to have any blood in my stools or any other kind of symptoms. Thank you
