so me and my boyfriend both get cold sores and the other day I performed oral sex and the next day we realised I had a cold sore so now im freaking out that hes going to get HSV 2 which will pretty much ruin his life and possibly our relationship.. So can HSV 2 develop from HSV 1 and if he already gets cold sores does that reduce the risks? We both don't have HSV 2 but im panicking he could get it from the cold sore.. Additionally would HSV 1 on his genitals be really bad like HSV1 and what would be need to do to sort it out but I thought as we both get cold sores it wouldn't matter because we have it anyway.. thanks..

As long as he has already been exposed to the same virus he will be fine. However, with first time exposure, HSV-1 can be passed onto other areas of the body; HSV-1 & HSV-2 are both interchangeable.

u have the HSV-1 but you've gave her HSV-2 (numbers are for different areas)you can still get it from foreplay, best thing to do now is for your girlfriend to go gum clinic and get tablets Aciclovir, take once daily or once weekly (depending on amount of outbreaks she has), this will reduce the outbreaks and severity of them. me and my partner are in your position too and this works well for us... we havent caught it off each other yet and been together 3yr. hope this helps

thankyou for your help but what can we still do with eachother e.g. fourplay without me catching it off her such as going down on her etc....

I'm 18 and since being around the age of 3 I've always had cold sores, but as getting older they've got worse, I go back and forth to the doctors because the problem is beyond a joke now, in 2 week I had six cold sores and one which was under my eye. The cold sores are now starting to leave scars around my mouth and returning constantly, even with 3 different creams prescribed by the doctor and tablets being given. No matter how many times I go back they just say it's natural, but being a 18 year old girl in this day in age walking around with COLDSORES on your face isn't nice. The cold sores are just little things they come up very big like blisters, I've even had one popped and the thing inside it swobbed to see if it was anything. Please someone help.

I am 44 years old and have suffered from cold sores and mouth ulcers since a baby. I remember trying the purple stuff - gentian violet - that I understand has been withdrawn from sale in the UK because of lead content. What I wanted to raise with anyone who suffers from cold sores is that food higher in Arginine than Lysine can aggravate the cold sore virus. In particular, I found (unfortunately) that eating chocolate, rice and peanuts actually aggravates my cold sores. I had 14 cold sores in 14 weeks and realised that my "healthy" snack option of rice cakes wasn't helping my cold sores. I stopped eating rice, chocolate(because of the cocoa content) and peanuts and haven't had them in more than 10 years. My cold sores occur much less frequently and for much shorter periods of time. Now it is usually too much sunshine or stress that brings them on. I can eat small quantities of white chocolate just to get the taste, but too much and the cold sore appears within three hours - literally. I avoid cocoa dusting on fancy coffees and desserts. It helps me - might be worth a try.

samantha, i ge tthe worst cold sores ever i have to take tym off work as a hairdresser becos they usually take over my whole lip and i cant talk or eat. i started using aciclovir tablets whicvh the doctor gave me and although they dont disappear magically my cold sores go away much quicker and if taken at the first tingle can even prevent them from developing. the more u use the tablets the less frequent the cold sores become so go 2 ur doctor and ask about the tablets. hope this helps xx

I have suffered from cold sores all my life. I got sick of trying to get rid of them quickly. I have found the most amazing stuff and even though I was getting a cold sore a week at one point, I now haven't had one for over a year! There is no cure, but I am delighted that I have found something that stops me having out breaks. It's a lip balm, I get it off the internet, it's free postage and packing too. Go to the Presley Lip Balm website. I hope it works for you as well as it has me, because I'm estactic.

i have had cold sores since i was a baby and as a kid i would suffer very badly from them . now i am in my 20's i hardly get them at all. i have found that the best treatment for cold sores is Distilled Witch Hazel and tea tree cream that you can get from most pharmacies. for me using these really help speed up the healing process and reduces the stinging more than actual cold sore cream itself.

There is a stigma to having herpes, yet not really to having cold sores. They're both the same virus (albeit types 1 or 2). The H word carries a lot of negative weight, doesn't it? Saying 'Cold-sores on your genitals' somehow takes the negative impact out of it, don't you think? Also, some info I read suggested up to 70% of ppl have the virus, therefore, it's normal to have it!

Hi Im 30 and for the past 10 years maybe once or twice a year I have been getting cold sore's on my neck, which sounds very strange. Ulcers come up like a cold sore on my neck on the same side each time, tingle like a cold sore weep like a cold sore and i treat them with cold sore cream, but lately I've been getting them more frequently. I've had blood tests taken and they have come back normal. Have you ever heard of neck cold sores, or is this some other sort of herpes virus ?

Hi that does not sound like cold sores but actual boils tell me do they start with an itch than pain that a pimple like than a pain like no other than they burst some times, sometimes u have to get them lanced to release the puss. If so than they are boils and the cream will never work but make it worst you have to get pills. Tell them to give you the right medication because this bacteria has already evolved and nothing can get rid of the stran of it but he new medication ds. Ask them tell them this thanks bye I know because my whole family was infected by my brother he almost lost his leg because of it! Please it very contagious use gloves and do not let anyone touch it but a professional doctor also sanitize everything you have touched or will including sheets cover infected area with gauze to not spread germs to loved ones or other parts of your own body.

I am 43 and have had cold sores all my life, not nice and very painful. Nothing works! even the violet stuff i used to have on them when i was a baby. I can't use Zovirax it spreads them about my face. Last year my dentist prescribed Fenistil, which has a different ingredient, this worked initially but not any more. At this resent time, the cold sores are so bad it looks like i have been in the boxing ring with an extremely large heavy weight! but to top it all off the inside of my lips are covered in very sore ulcers, is there a link?? Help, i just want to lock myself away and cry!!

I've had cold sores for as long as I can remember. 2 things I found that really help: Raw aloe vera gel - I grow aloe plants in my window sill, extremely easy to grow. When I feel the tingle on my lip, cut off a leave and rub the gel into the affected area a few times / day. 9/10 the sore doesn't appear and if it does, it's gone within a couple of days! The gel is also excellent at treating other skin irritations. Zinc & Vitamin C tablets - 1 a day keeps my cold sores at bay!

I have cold sores since I was at primary school. They Can be really bad. I discovered that eating nuts brings them on for me. I gave up eating nuts and did not have one for 2 years. As soon as I ate nuts I got one. So I continue to avoid nuts. It's hard as I love them but if I slip up and eat them at a Party then I get a cold sore. It's due to argenine. An Amino acid. Look it up it really works for me.

most people dont know but cold sores are actually made worse or even brought on by stress.Try to not think about what could happen because believe it or not. You could be your own worst enemy you think about it,worry! you get one! only that time of year! over and over do you see a pattern if so you may be suffering from stress which manifests as a cold sore! tress up result COLD SORE

when the virus is active either genitals or mouth it is possible to transmit / receive the disease if you are having intercourse or giving / receiving oral sex or anal sex. condoms would obviously be a precaution for sex / anal / oral although if some one has cold sores on the mouth then kissing them would likely transmit herpes to you. it is likely that if you have contracted either cold sores on the mouth or genitals you would not have both symptoms. hope this makes sense and does not scare anyone. it varies among people but generally over time the sypmtoms become less frequent and less of an irritant than it would be for the initial months..but of course always remains.

I have had gential herpes for several years now. In response to your question, if your have herpes and have sexual intercourse with your partner without cold soures being present. There is still a chance they will catch it through asympotomatic shedding. It is important to remember that herpes can still be caught even through protected sex. May I suggest you look at this website. It is vey helpful. http://www.herpes.org.uk/faq.html#10

Hi, I have always suffered with cold sores since i was a very little girl and I'm now 18. They used to get so bad that I couldn't eat or drink or even open. Y mouth very wide. Now, admittedly I can't stop them, but I can prevent them from spreading and swelling up to the max as I use compeed cold sore patches and they work wonders for me! I hope you find something soon Kirsty Xx

I think this article is poor because it fails to mention the key cause of cold sores - i.e. an arginine - l-Lysine imbalance which can be corrected. Forget topical creams which often don't help take at least 1000 mg of L-Lysine daily (I have taken 3 a day during outbreaks and 1 a day for prevention). This has stopped a cold sore in its tracks. Secondly avoid the trigger foods that are high in arginine - peanuts, peanut butter, red wine, chocolate, popcorn, caffeine (all the nice things I know!) and focus on foods high in L-lysine (e.g. eggs). Finally, weird and painful though it sounds, dab the sores with cotton wool with a spot of nail varnish remover. This dries them out quickly though yes it stings and stinks! Remember stress, extreme cold and sunlight are also triggers so use sunscreen and try to relax - get as much sleep as possible and drink lots of warm water with ginger to detox the system.

My 7 year old grandaughter has suffered from cold sores since she was about 4 years old and gets them quite regularly. At the moment she a cold sore in the corner of her mouth and also an area on her cheek. She has a good diet. She has started to get upset by them and it upsets me and her parents. We have tried Zovirax and the doctor has told her mum just to put sudocrem on them. Is there anything we can do to prevent her getting them or anything we can give her to help with the symptoms?
