I'm 16 and a male. I'm skinny, but I do think my ribs stick out more than they should, particularly at the bottom. Someone pointed this out recently as a joke, but now I have realised, and I can't stop noticing/thinking about it. I think its called "flared ribs" or something but I'm not sure. Also, I do seem to have a slight funnel chest. Its not massively noticeable, but I definitely think it is abnormal. I was wondering if you could give me any information, or any solutions?!

hi tom, there may be nothing wrong at all as this may be your normal body shape, but if it is worrying you that much i would advise to see a doctor - they can run tests if they think it is an issue, or else perhaps they can put your fears to rest if there is nothing to worry about. just remember that everyone is different and you should be proud to be unique.

i have protruding ribs and a swollen abdomen.no one will tell me what is causing it.what is causing my ribs to stick out

I have it to and its not affecting me in anyway except making my body look kinda weird:( I'm a boy BTW. My ribs stick out right below my nipples and the middle of my chest sticks in. Around the heart.

I had my son 6 weeks ago and have just been told the ceiling of my vagina has collapsed slightly. It sticks out slightly and I can feel it when I move about. I was told to keep doing my pelvic floor excercises and it will get better. Can I also use a pelvic toner to speed things up? Electronic or one with weights?

I have the same problem about my ribs, all my friends and family don't have it except for me.I'm always embarrassed about wearing bikinis or tank tops because they stick out. People always ask me why and feel them and make fun of them. I'm 15 year old female and I'm not fat but kinda skinny I'm 132lbs and I don't understand why my ribs stick out far. Is there anything besides breaking my ribs?

I'm the same age and have the exact Same problem, it's embarrassing to wear crop tops or swimsuits in summer and makes me look larger than I actually am

Hi, i have a problem which is sort of like funnel chest except its not my chest that dips in, the right side of my ribs dip in. I would just like to know if anything can be done for this as it does sometimes cause pain for both sides of my ribs and is also visably noticable. I have tried to see my gp about this problem but he is not sure why my ribs are like this or what to do about it!

I have just had three stones removed in two operations one was 14mm one was 11mm and one was 9 mm the bloating and pain below your ribs are normal it's taken me 6 and a half months to have them taken out on the NHS I was going to pay private because I couldn't wait any longer but I collapsed with the pain I was rushed into hospital where they did the first of two operations during the wait I put on 11 lbs I thought it was me just getting fat but since the op I've lost all the excess weight and some and now the pain has nearly gone - I have now had 8 stones in about 7 years

hi - do u have any deformity of ribs? i too have just been diagnosed with ps (at age 37) i have deformed ribs and have been refered for boob job to even up bust as i am same as u cup size differs loads. i have got the go ahead and am now waiting to see plastic surgeon for second time to arrange surgery. If u have rib problem as i have then go bak and tell them about me and that i am allowed one and u should too! please let me know how u go as i know wot upset this can cause (little as it may seem to others it DOES affect mental happiness!) try a diff doc as well cos i went to my old go 15 yrs ago n begged him to break ribs to solve it but he wouldnt (thank god now lol) but when i changed gp n went on the approach of ribs instead of boobs it got me a diagnosis and result. ur prob being seen as moaning when theres no need. but if u have deformity then u have need i found. sad that u have to fight like this. my doc was sooooo good and is even trying to find a specialist to find out more about Polands. please keep me posted how u go on. x

I have a similar problem, or rather had the "problem". At a really young age (5-9) yrs my ribs would stick out a lot, which I felt kinda weird about at first, but at the ages of 11 all the way to 14 (my current age in 2014) my ribs started to get tighter around the sides but still pushed out a bit in front which is completely fine with me cuz my abs stick out at the same hight as my ribs and and the place where my bladder is held (not sure what it's called) is no longer round like a football, which just helps my overall appearance in general. Can still see some of the lines on my ribs but I guess thats normal, as for a fix to all those comments above, just keep going on with your life and keep fit, everybody is different which makes us all unique, playing a sport that involves lots of upper body movement (basketball, tennis, netball etc.) can help muscles to develop over your ribs to conceal them and make them tighter hope i helped in some way, and btw im a boy so plz dont ask me any girl questions XD. Cheers, Peace, all of that 😃

I am 24yrs old and I have a funnel chest and my ribs are very uneven. I have just been diagnosed with rotational scoliosis as a result of my ribs twisting my spine. I've also had free breast implants as a result of my chest because a surgeon thought it was easier then breaking my ribs and starting again. And the implants have helped my self esteem a lot. But now I have to deal with the back problems that go with it :(

Hi! How did you manage to have free breast implants?? I have a funnel chest and very small breasts with a little skin tissue and it has been affecting my self esteem A LOT. I can't afford to pay for the procedure because I'm a full time student and mom. I'm considering to ask my doctor about breast implants refunded by NHS but I don't want to feel like I'm trying to exaggerate things just to benefit from NHS refunds :-(

Please respond! How were you able to get the implants for free??! I too have pectus and really want implants to help my self esteem and to eliminate anxiety attacks while bra shopping. Very glad to hear you're feeling better about yourself. But, sorry you're experiencing some discomfort. Hope it's not too bad :/

I have had the condition since i can remember, my dad also has the condition so I have always known it was genetic. The problem that worries me more is that my bottom two ribs stick out dramatically, about an inch more than the rest of my body. When I was 21 I made the decision to have surgery, my ribs was broken and re placed with 2 metal bars, this was supposed to correct the concave chest, not the ribs. The surgery did not work as i caught a infection, pleurisy and pneumonia, so after 6 months the bars was removed. I still have the problem and a huge scar to go with it, weight lifting does make a small difirence but my ribs will always stick out. No doctor can seem to tell me what exactly causes it or if it can be corrected, I have given up and trying to live with it, which can be very difficult at times.

Ahhh! Hahah! This exact thing has happened to me!! And I'm 99% sure it happened when I was around 13-14 years of age as well! I too, took a fast-paced cricket ball to the chest... which I believe is attributable to my since protruding rib.

Helloo, my sister has this aswell and she recently saw a specialist. He said it will help if you tighten the muscles around the ribs and stomach. She also mentioned that her ribs felt as if they were touching her lung but they werent. I hope this helps a little :)

I read somewhere the redness has something to do with the ribs. The surgery involves cutting a vein or something in the ribs. It's quite expensive, I just heap on loads of foundation. I'm going in the army and as far as I know makeup is forbiden. Im dredding being singled out during training. Any advice? :(

I am in the same position as you. I am a 47 yr old working wife and mum and I have perforated my septum through nose picking. I am so ashamed of myself and scared stiff that my nose is going to collapse. How would I explain that to everyone. Every morning the first thing I do is feel to make sure my nose hasn't collapsed in the night. The thought of it makes my stomach flip like it's already collapsed I am so certain it is going to happen. It is stopping me from getting on with my life as I am now obsessing about it. I just feel sick inside about it. I would love to be able to discuss it with someone who understood and didn't judge too harshly. Have you had any luck with professional help?

I'm a 15 year old girl and I have both the last few ribs poke out quite a lot (mostly my left) almost like they curve outwards. It's so annoying and I'm very self conscious about it. Very noticeable when I stand up and wearing clothes. I just want them gone because my body is nice other than those stupid ribs which I can't seem to change, and they make my body look ugly. It's good to know I'm not alone, but I just really want them gone, and to know why they're that way.

I am male, age 25. I have pectus and think I have always had it. I recently discovered that I have many signs of marfan syndrome so first stage is to be tested for that. My ribs are slightly uneven and stick out a little bit, this bothers me more than the dip itself. I have worked out off and on since about age 15. If I tense my chest a little I actually look fine as this pulls my ribs in. If I stand normally I look bloated due to my sticking out ribs. I am considering surgery as it has always bothered me to a certain extent, although I think I don't have it as severe as others I have seen. The main thing I did not really know what it was until recently, you kind of have to pick things like this up yourself. Working out does help and to my knowledge the pectus is not causing any internal damage. Some report not being able to run etc but I always had more energy than anyone as a child, was the fastest sprinter in school and always played football. In two minds whether to have something done seen as I have already lived with it for 25 years. If I was 13 again, I would definitely have it operated on.

I found this forum really helpful with some other alternatives to surgery (work outs, etc), but one guy recommended a strap from laceit.com. Might be worth checking out :)

Hi I am 23 years old and have had a funnel chest all my life! I think it is genetic as my dad and brother have it too but I seem to have a deeper hole and have larger ribs! I have a hole in my chest so bras and bikinis do not sit on my chest and my ribs stick out quite alot! I have hated this all my life and very ashamed of it! I cant wear fitted tops as you can see my ribs through it and looks like im trying to breath in all the time its awful! I always wondered if there was something that can be done about them but have no idea where to start?? I have always had shortness of breath but been told many times that I do not have asthma off my gp and suffer from alot of palpertations especially at the night but had no idea that my disgusting chest could be the cause of these problems!

I'm 15 and have had PE as long as i remember, it's uncomfortable and has gotten progressively worse, especially recently. Sometimes it can make breathing painful and sometimes when i stretch my ribs slip past each other. I'm hoping for some way to be rid of this, however from research, I've seen that recovery times can be very long... is there anything i can do to slowly coax my ribs into flattening out? like sleeping a certain way?

I am 28 yearsold and my breasts are 28/30 kk/l. I am a size 14/16 and about 11st. My gp wont refer me for a breast reduction because of my mental health. I have indentations on my shoulders, patchy skin on my ribs, small ribs, back ache and I am hunched over. When I sleep atnight I have to wear a bra to bed and I still end up with my breasts chocking me. I cant cope with them anymore. Can you please help?
