You’re nothing special – most people will get an epidermoid cyst at some point in their life but these smooth round lumps, commonly found on the scalp, neck, face, chest and upper back can often, quite understandably, cause alarm. Read more →

Hi I've recently had a hysterectomy for ovarian cyst and endometriosis was discovered I've now felt a hard lump, very sore, on my vagina could this be related? Could it be a sebaceous cyst or bartholin cyst, or am I worrying to much! Thanks

Could be either one or something much worse. See a gynecologist (perhaps a different one than the one who did your hysterectomy) as there has been an increase in vaginal cancer following hysterectomy. 95 % chance or better that it is a cyst sebaceous or bartholin, but not worth taking a chance. If it is sore, there are options.

Thank you for replying Kelly, oh i didn't know that, I will definitely go and have this checked out. Thank you.

I am 27 years old had a laproscopy last October was diagnosed with endometriosis and had a large chocolate ovarian cyst drained (5.3cm), however I have recently gone back to have a ultrasound & transvaginal scan & the cyst has come back but only measuring 2.5cm. My GP decided to put me back on the pill to help, but we want to start trying for a baby. Will i have to be taking the pill forever to prevent the cyst or is there another way? Although after my sugery the Gyneacologist advised me that there is a chance it would come back as they only drained the cyst. Please help?

Can anyone help me? My boyfriend has a cyst on his face and has had it for over two years now. As time has gone by, it's become bigger and bigger. The cyst is close to his eye and we have seen the doctor multiple of times and unfortunately they haven't been able to help us. He works in retail as a manager and find his cyst on his face really uncomfortable when confronting customers in conflict or new people. Where can we go to get help?

I've suffered with severe cysts in my face from around the age of 15-16 and got a outbreak now of 6 which are gradually going with. Be sure to wash the face more then twice a day. I don't use soap ir any oily products on the face and use a warm salt-water compress whenever I get the chance. Sticking to that washing and compress mine usually draw an head after around 2 weeks. I've also heard a drawing salve can speed up the process depending how deep the cyst actually is. Probably not the best answer but thought id share what works for me fir you to give a try.

I have the same issue as your b/f Lauren, I have been to the NHS several times and they have told me they won't do anything about it as its classes as cosmetic even though I've stated I want it doing, I'll sign a waver and I don't mind a scar. My advice would be to look privately, that's what I'm having to do.

I'm a 28yr old female and I tried to make a GP appointment today for a cyst I have on my scalp but could only get a phone appointment. Told the gp my cyst has started to seep and oose puss again (previously burst 3yrs ago and I can remember the pain :( ) he's has written me a prescription and said there isn't anything else they can do. This gp has never seen my cyst as it was a different practice I attended as I've since moved house. Is this normal? Shouldn't a gp at least examine it?

I have had 2 boils on my scalp in as many months. My second boil was over Christmas and was very inflamed and excrutiating. I wanted it lanced. I was informed over the phone that the only treatment is antibiotics they dont lance them anymore even though they are painful. I was surprised that i was diagnosed over the phone but no lancing allowed. Now if you see youtube in the states it appears to be you have a zit nurse who sorts boils, cysts, acne, blackheads, whiteheads etc...... why doesnt the nhs have this?

Hi Mark, Nope, not for me. No problems. Only gets a little sore when I examine myself. Cheers Joe.

I'm 23 and have been diagnosed with an ovarian cyst that measures 6cm x 5cm x 4cm with calcification in the centre. Although some do not experience symptoms I have been getting shooting pains, especially during periods, dull aches, painful breasts, swelling of the abdomen and pain and bleeding during intercourse. Since the diagnoses I have had two ultrasound scans where the doctor has said she is 99% sure it is a dermoid cyst but sent me for an MRI to confirm. What is the usual procedure for dealing with cysts of this nature? I'm really concerned that the ovary attached to this cyst will be removed and this will affect my fertility. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Allison, I had no signs of a cyst on my left side, till one night I ended up double over in pain.. Went in and they had to remove the ovary, via key hole surgery via belly button, scaring in absolute minim and down time was also good... I was shown pictures of what had been taken out as I was worried about loosing a ovary.. When I saw the pictures of what it and my ovary looked like, and advise all tests showed all clear to any cancerous formation, I was felt ok with it.... I would be going back to your doctor for more advice on this, only you know your body and when it does not feel right.. Go and advise GP all the signs you are feeling and let a expert in his field advise... Take care

I was diagnosed with fibroids back in 2005 and PCOS. Periods were regular and pain was inconsistent so after 6months decided not to do anything. I deal with the facial hair. I found alternative treatment taking systemic enzymes which shrunk the fibroid but was expensive. Kept doing this every couple of years as GP just wanted to prescribe painkillers. In 2011, young female GP told me to wait for menopause as in mid 40s! This year started really bad abdo pain, thought fibroid again. Was in tears with pain and very bloated (thought was wheat intolerance). Got very assertive with GP and asked for up to date scans and gynae referral. GP has been great, saw a fab gynae consult within 4 weeks, scans 2 weeks later and have a 4.7cm fibroid, 7cm ovarian cyst on right and 1.2cm cyst on left ovary (no pain yet there). Waiting for op to have cysts removed and mirena coil to deal with fibroid. Been in lots of pain for 10 days now but period only lasted 5 days. I moved 3yrs ago and new GPs (apart from young female) have been great. Keep pushing and see different GP if need be - there are some really good ones out there but you have to make a pain of yourself to get referred. Also, google - I have found really helpful support forums. NHS website was actually good. Gives good and bad experiences but from real women who have had treatment. All the best for you - keep on at them - minimum you need is referral for transvaginal ultrasound to see if fibroid or ovarian/fallopian cyst. Once you know what dealing with, GPs can refer you to specialist.

My friend was detected with STI and was given antibiotics for one wk, aside from this there was a small cyst that the dr detected during the examination. the symptoms of the sti is gone now but the cyst is still there, my question is how long will it take for the cyst to disappear? the cyst is not moving and some kind of hard, its the same as size of a small pea. the dr told him that there's nothing to worry about.

Caitlin, I've had cyst most of my life and it sounds like it could be again for you. It seems that if you are prone to get them, you will again. You should go to see a doctor because of the symptoms you are having sound severe. The cyst can rupture and cause serious problems and possibly infection. Don't wait if you start to feel worse. Your post was 2 weeks ago, I wonder how you feel now?

I don't think they have to be the same size as our bodies tend to not have perfect symmetry, but if you have a lump it could be an epididymal cyst. I had one found 10 years ago when I got an ultrasound to find the source of my pain. That was not because of the cyst though. It was a varicocele (enlarged veins in the scrotum). Since the cyst didn't hurt and was harmless, I never did anything about that.

Had an ultrasound on my testicals last week. They found a small cyst non cancerous. Dr gave me 10 days worth of Cipro. I'm on day 5 and still have pain. Will Cipro shrink the cyst? I'm just glad it's a cyst and not the other "C" word!

I'm not a Dr. But I have cysts on my testicle. Recently the pain went from mild throb to outright sharp and stabbing. This was a because of an infection in the epididymis (which is where my cysts are located). The antibiotics (ciprofloxacin) will help with any infection associated with the cyst, but will not shrink the cyst.

Hi I'm 15 and i have a small cyst on my left testicle and am very worried. I am scared of it getting bigger and having to have surgery when I'm older. I only feel pain with my cyst when I masturbate. Am I the only 15 year old with a cyst?? It seems rare and I can't stress how worried I am!

no you are not i am also 15 with the same problem, and i don't know what to do i need some advice! help!

Me too , mine is quite hard but squidgy and is definitely not on the ball, it is in the tubes . I was told to leave it for a while and see what happens , but I did get it checked and so should you :) it goes on / off and i get paranoid - hope you get better

There is a possibility of a cyst refilling if the sac wasn't removed. Lancing gets out all of the stuff INSIDE the cyst, but it doesn't remove the cyst sac. These sacs will refill if they aren't removed. Chances are that by lancing the cyst, some of the remnants were left inside of it or leaked out and a second cyst formed. This is a vicious cycle. The best thing to do is have the doctor/dermatologist remove the sacs of both cysts. It's considered surgical removal, but it's necessary for reoccurring cysts. And at your father's age, get them taken out. He shouldn't be going through this OVER AND OVER. Once they're out, there shouldn't be any other issues.

Hi, In 2005 I found a squidgy lump oin my left breast, My doctor reffered me to the breast clinic and I had a scan and was told it was a cyst. However, The cyst has now become painful and has slightly grew, its not a hard lump as it moves, also for the last week my left nipple has been leaking clearish fluid, is this due to the cyst,as the cyst is at side of my breast near my under arm.Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thankyou Diane

I have a cebucus cyst under my right arm it's not the first cyst I've had. I have surgery to take to out from each armpit but now I have another cyst and I can not lift my arm at all as its burning and throbbing and stinging I can't take the pain anymore. They have gave me pain killers and antibiotics but it's just not touching it now I have flu symptoms with it does that mean the poison is leaking into my blood?

Relax, you are not being poisoned. For "leakage" to happen, the cyst would have to rupture, but if you are on antibiotics, very unlikely. But even if that were to happen, what is getting out is keratin, which is cells (found in skin, hair and nails). Upon rupture, it could become infected and inflamed, but rupture would have to be through the surface of the skin. Think that you just happen to be getting some sort of bug at the same time you are experiencing this pain. If pain continues and you feel worse, calling a doctor to ask would not be a bad idea. Good luck.

i am 15 and am not sexually active i have a boyfriend of 3 years i recently got rushed into hospital with a suspected pendicitis they kept me overnight and did not think an ultrasound was neccessery after 2 days the pain got worse so i went to my GP and he was quite concerned so referred me to get a scan they found a 8 cm ovarian cyst which i have now put together that this may be the problem why i have not had a period for 10 months they checked all my bloods and hormone levels and said the results were fine they never said what type of cyst it was it is a water based cyst that is on my left ovary they told me that it will pass through my monthly period but as i have not had a period and the hormone tablets i am taking(to get my period back) is not working why did i develop this cyst as it does not run in any of the family and is this the cause of the periods stopping what has caused me to get this cyst and

I have a cyst on my right ovary. I've had it since febuary and I've had two ultrasounds. I won't know the size of the cyst or what type of cyst it is until I see my doctor on Tuesday. I've been in agonising pain for nearly 3 months now. Especially in my lower back, hips, thighs and groin. I have to see a consultant at the hospital on the 31st May and I'm terrified. My main worry is that it's something more serious and I'm scared it could make me infertile. I'm only 20 :(

See yout GP prakash, I have exactly the same symptoms as you but on the left hand side. Mine is 15mm, had an ultrasound and will have my operation on 18 july 2013, to have it removed the pain in my groin and stomach left to middle is a dull ache, and I have been given pain killers(zapain). I have been waiting half a year for my operation...so make sure you get it checked and removed, good luck.

I recently went to my GP with what I thought was a lump. My doctor examined my right testicle where I had the lump and told me it's nothing to worry about that you have a cyst. I was just wondering can a cyst on the testicle interfere with sperm production/ ejaculation from the penis? I'm also thinking of getting it removed because I prefer to be cyst free.

I have had a similar cyst in the corner of my right eye for about 18 months. It grew very very slowly and was not immediately noticeable to other people unless I pointed it out. Then last week my eye seemed slightly irritated, and I rubbed it and noticed some white substance on my finger. Turned out the cyst had burst. I went to an out of hours clinic and was told to leave it alone. The rest of the contents of the cyst made their way out over night and I have had no problems since, just tried not to touch or rub my eye at all.

My scrotum is red a lot of the time and becomes tight which is uncomfortable and the tip of the penis go's a pale colour under the skin, also when flaccid the penis can feel stiff sometimes....
