I had serious diarrhoea and was diagnosed with diverticulosis. All information seems to say eat more fibre - surely this cannot be right in the case of diarrhoea. I have at the moment cut out all fruit. I am diabetic, so already on a restricted diet.

Hello I am 16 years old and I have had trouble with my bowels for the past 2 years, I always have a stomach ache, feeling bloated and cramps and it makes me scared to go out as every time I do go out my stomach feels as if I need diarrhoea and sometimes do, it has no given me anxiety as I get scared to leave the house, if I eat I've creams, sweets chocolate and dairy products I find my stomach will not agree with these foods, however I will not have diarrhoea straight away it is normally the morning after, I have been to the doctor many times and have had blood tests and they tell me nothing is wrong, one minute I'm constipated the next I have diarrhoea and I have a stomach ache everyday, do you have any idea what this could be? I'm starting to feel like its all in my head

To whom this may concern, Ever since I had my appendix removed in 2002 due to appendicitis, every time I eat something greasy I get severe abdominal upset and diarrhoea. Bear in mind that I have not had any fatty food or greasy food since the start of the year. I avoid fast food places like they are the plague and yet 2 days ago my godson came home with KFC and gave me a piece and for the last two days I have been experiencing diarrhoea and stomach cramps whenever I lay down but when I'm sitting up I am perfectly fine. Please help me with any advice that you can offer and it will be greatly appreciated. Regards Matt

Im now 30 years old and i've suffered with cystitis on and off for many years, although i have periods were i can go without having a bout of it for a year or so it always comes back to get me! I also suffer from Chrons disease which i got when i was 16 and i am wondering if were i get alot of diarrhoea the bacteria from my bowl could set it off? The doctors give me antibiotics to clear the cystitis but were i have chrons it gives me very bad diarrhoea and makes me feel really poorly, so i have to stop taking it so the cysitis does not go.i've had blood tests and sent in many urine samples to the doctors but sometimes they come back with no infection showing so im at my wits end i've had it on and off since january and sometimes i suffer for 2 weeks at a time. Me and my partner are also now trying for a baby but sex does not seem to be my trigger, as im getting alot of cystitis for no reason and it wakes me in the night which is when it seems to start, we have now been trying for a baby for arround six months and still nothing, and due to the cystitis sex is most of the time off the cards. Im worried there is something wrong with me and im going to struggle getting pregnant, so if you can help with how i can get rid of this problem as i cant take antibiotics i would be much appreciative.

hi joe, everyone who has IBS has different symptoms and i'd reccomend you see your GP to confirm if this is the case. depending on your age and when the symptoms started will tell them if it is IBS or something else like food intolerance/allergy, etc. mine gets triggered by stress, certain foods (usually yummy ones i like best!) and i control mine with diet, medication and eating small meals regularly. it doesn't cure it but i find it helps control the worst symptoms so i can get on with life. don't suffer and worry and get it checked out.there are loads of info sites about digestive stuff that can help whatever yours is,and it will help you control it. P.S. i find eating dried fruit gives me room-clearing BAD eggy wind as the sulphites upset your gut! not nice...! good luck. x

My son is nearly 6 and has just had 3 days off school due to diarrhoea his stools now are very soft smelly and mustard colour. Is this a concearn still not eating much? Have spoken to gp.

I don't experience any pain or itching after sex so I'm probably not allergic - but if I swallow semen, I will have a bout of diarrhoea not long afterwards. Has anyone else had this problem or found a way to prevent it (besides not swallowing!)?

i am 25 yrs old and i have suffered with IBS for 4 years now i find it really embarrassing i have consant diarrhoea and have to go to the toilet 5-7 times a day i get very tired all the time and no energy. the most emarrassing bit is the noise and smell i cant go any where unless i know that there is a toilet near by. the only thing which i found that helped me is Lopearomide (anti-diarrhoea) tablets i take one morning and night which normally helps to control it and when i have a bad day or know that im going out i will take 1 or 2 extra the only bad bit about them is the bloating which i would rather have than diarrhoea, i would definately recommend these tablets with anyone with constant diarrhoea

I had the exact same problem. Agonising cramps and watery, mucus diarrhoea. Even now a week later, I still get some cramping after eating, and soft (but not full-blown diarrhoea) stools. I thought it was a virus, but now I'm not too sure - I didn't experience any vomitting, just the cramps, fever and diarrhoea. I'm not sure if I should still see a doctor... Any insight as to what might have caused this, would be helpful!

Hi I have ibs. Recently it's really wiped me out. I had a stint of diarrhoea that went on for 3 weeks and I was put on buscopan as immodium sends me the other way and I can't go at all. I have read up on peoples issues with diarrhoea and apparently most normal people get diarrhoea maybe 4 times a year, Considering I have it most days I found that stat scary. I Don't know what to do with myself it affects me to the point I am unable to go to work some days and I'm worried I am at risk of losing my job. Need some help.

Laura, may i ask why you are afraid to leave the house? Have you got constant diarrhoea or have you got diarrhoea attacks? You are right, taking Imodium for too long isn’t good. I would recommend a food diary to see whether there are any specific foods that cause your diarrhoea or attacks, or even constipation. Try some peppermint oil to calm your stomach and intestines, you can get it in tablet or liquid form. I’m sorry i can’t be of more help, but maybe these little tricks help you, they certainly helped me. Julia x

I had a chest infection in January, my dr gave me Augmentin 625mg, which were too strong for me and gave me very bad diarrhoea. I went back to my dr and he changed my tablets, however, I still had the diarrhoea. I went back to the dr again and he gave me codiene tablets. I am still getting diarrhoea which seems to be after I have had a meal. Could I have developed IBS?

I took azithromycin 1000mg (four 250 mg tablets as a single dose) to treat chlamydia and had diarrhoea 1.5 hours later. Will the diarrhoea have stopped the antibiotic from working?

After having IBS for 20 years a holistic practitioner was recommended to me (aged 42). I had to elimnate several foods for 2 months and for the first time in my life I didnt have diarrhoea or constipation. In my case I shouldnt eat dairy, wheat or drink wine. I do not get diarrhoea immediately but a few days later. I used get such bad tummy ache that I would need a pillow to hug. Also when it was extremely bad I would vomit & have diarrhoea at the same time. I also saw a Natural Nutrition practitioner and I now take supplements one of which is magnesium - this has helped to cease the stomach cramps. Im 55 and have finally reached a balance with my IBS

He has heard of Loporamide and Apercap that seems to help the diarrhoea. Has anyone else been prescribed a drug that will assist with this horrific side effe t from diverticulosis?

I am a 40 year old female, when i was 14 i stopped eatting red meat due to pain and diarrhoea. Over the last 14 years i have had more problems when eatting certain foods. In April 2010 i had an iron transfusion, which made me very ill - constant pain in stomach and bowel, diarrhoea more frequently, bleeding from rear. I was told by Doctors that i had diverticula disease in June 2010. In December 2010 i became very ill (sick + diarrhoea constantly, fever, very bad pain) was given morphine injections + antibotics and rehydration fluids. I was then told that i had acute, severe diverticulits + sespis. I have been unable to work since Christmas, due to this i have been told that i may have to have an op to remove part of the bowel and stay on anti-diarrhoea tablets for the rest of my life. This is a very painful, depressing disease and i feel very sad for anyone who has to face this disease. I was also put on a high fibre diet, but this made my condition even worse.

For 2 days i have had diarrhoea and i have been going at least 3 times in 1 hour. I have only been sick once, and had a fever and high temp with shakes and sweats. Since i started to have diarrhoea i haven't eaten anything apart from maybe 1 or 2 biscuits and a bite of an apple. I am getting really painful stomach cramps to the point i can't get myself up. Despite starving myself i'm still passing watery stool 2 days later? Help please as the doctors is now closed!

I have suffered from constant diarrhoea for 17 years then Iwent to see the dr and he diognised an infected colon but as the consultation cost was to high i returned to my docter who said I had ibs. Since then I have tried all the recomended medicine for IBS to no avail until I tried Ranitidine which really helps control the painful spasms but not the diarrhoea. This unfortunately is something I will have to live with diet definitely helps and avoiding stress, cant be employed though!

I was just disnosed with mild diverticulitis from a Sigmoidal colonoscopy yeasterday. If this disease is mainly caused by a low-fibre diet, how come I've had chronic diarhhoea for years? I generall eat a high-fibre diet, unless my diarrhoea gets really bad, then I can't eat much at all. Pulses and fruits are out of the question for me most of the time. A prescriptive 'eat more fibre' does NOT WORK - my diarrhoea becomes WORSE.

I was diagnosed also with diverticulitis from a Sigmoidal colonoscopy recently and have bouts of extreme diarrhoea. My sister had similar symptoms and was told hers was IBS and was prescribed something which she takes daily and the problem of diarrhoea has all but dissapeared. Im not sure what it is she takes as I'm no longer in contact with her. I can be perfectly normal in the morning and by lunchtime running for the loo. I take a diarhhoea pill (Immodium type) almost every day to try to relieve the symptoms.

Hi Nathan, my names Amy and I'm 19 years old and have suffered from ibs for nearly 12 years! I had the stress of my exams on my shoulders when I was in school and I think the best thing to do is to let someone at your school know what your going through (teachers) because when I was in sixth form my ibs was so bad and I got a doctors note and they were so understanding saying that I could do my exam whenever I was ready, which really did help because it's knowing people do understand what your going through and are sympathetic about it! But your story sounds exactly like me! With having diarrhoea one day and constipation the next, regardless of how hard I try to go it just doesn't happen, I've just always thought it was what happened after a bout of diarrhoea!?
