    Teeth Discolouration

Teeth can become discoloured for a number of reasons, and often the effect is temporary and can be attributed to food or drink, such as coffee, red wine or beetroot. Read more →

My teeth are in pretty poor shape after my childhood and my reluctance to clean my teeth. I'm living with the consequences now, but thankfully I am brushing my teeth twice a day currently. However, my top 2 teeth have began to rot at the top of the tooth where it meets the gum, and I have had numerous fillings. Is there anything I can do to make the appearance of my teeth better, make the teeth whiter and look more healthy. And also, disguise or fix the rotted area between my top two teeth and my gum.

The most suitable solution is to have 'composite' restorations placed which are white - this must be done by a dentist and is available on the NHS for anterior teeth. Keep on top of your brushing etc., stop smoking and avoid foods that stain teeth including wine/curry etc.

the rot at the top of your teeth is because you are not cleaning your teeth properly. i would advise a trip to the dentist to have the rot removed and filling placed, and thena trip to the hygienist for a very strict oral hygiene regime

Hi I'm stevie and I'm coming 26, for the past 9 years my teeth are yellow and the enamel is off most my teeth, I used to drink a lot of fizzy drinks when I was in my teens. I always have to fillings done because I'm always breaking and chipping my teeth and I also smoke I know that doesn't help my teeth but I have tried to quit a few times in the past. But I have bad anxiety problems that I just can't socialise with people because I don't want people seeing my teeth, I can't remember when the last time I actually smiled. Because of my teeth I get badly depressed and there days that I don't eat beacuse I scared of breaking my teeth. I have no confidence or self esteemm, when I see people in street they have nice perfect teeth. I hate my teeth and I hate myself for what I have done to them. Can anybody help or give me advice?

I'm 34 and some of my teeth have crumbled. I only have 24 teeth left and at least 5 have crumbled. I brush my teeth twice per day. My dentist told me that it's due to smoking. I have friends who smoke more than I do but have perfect teeth. Why are my teeth doing this and how do I stop it?

Hi, I'm 15 and recently my dentist has been baffled as to why I still have my baby teeth. I recently had to go there because if two teeth chipping, they were both baby teeth, molars and both on the side of the mouth I eat with normally. The dentist a say it was caused by the pressure of the adult teeth growing and excessive grinding, probably while in bed.My teeth are in good condition, I brush two-three times a day with Clinomin toothpaste as it prevents staining from tea and coffee. I was wondering if there is anything I could do about getting my baby teeth out and stopping grinding, as my dentist hasn't offered me any treatment. Please help, I love my teeth lots, thanks.

Go to the doctors! Everyone has different colour skin, its never exactly any one colour. If it's uncomfortable/ itchy/ painful etc definitely go to the doctors. If you're too embarrassed to go, just remember, the doctor has seen it all before, and worse! It's their job.

hi, im 18 and had the same brown marks on my 2 front teeth through medication etc from when i was younger. i went to the dentist several times and they suggested having vaneers to cover my teeth. i recently moved to a new dentist who suggested microabrasion where they put some acidic substance on the teeth and scrape it off which removes the discolouration i had this done a few months ago and im now completely happy with my teeth :) x

you have got 2 options, 1st don't worry about them at all, if it's not painful, we all have got at least one weakness, some one is short, some one have got bad teeth, some girls got really small breast, .... 2nd, you pull these 2 tooth out and make 2 new once, ( artificial) however it will costs you.

My teeth were yellow too. I brushed every now and then, not on a regular basis as I know I should have, then I tried this: Buy some 'Baking soda' or 'Bicarbonate of soda' NOT Baking Powder(cost about 90p from Tesco's) it is a 'natural earth element' and very safe to use. If you accidentally drink some dont worry, some athletes actually drink it before performing to enhance performance infact. Next, buy some pure (not concentrate) Lemon juice, wet the toothbrush slightly with tap water then dip into soda then add 2-3 drops of lemon juice and it will start to fizz. This reaction lifts stains from teeth. Now, brush teeth (in an up and down motion for a minimum of ten minutes then rinse. You should notice an immediate colour change though dont expect a yellow to pearl white difference just yet, and only use the lemon juice twice a week max! however, use the bicarb of soda every time. I usually take 20 mins a time to brush my teeth twice a day, (10 mins with bicarb and lemon juice and ten mins with a toothpaste dipped in bicarb of soda once after breakast and once after my evening meal. The results of just one week of this will tranform the colour of your teeth and you will be completely encouraged to look after your teeth from there on as the results will impress you so much! Before toothpaste was invented, bicarb of soda and water was the toothpaste of the day, it still is really. Most of the expensive toothpaste's have bicarb in them albeit a small amount and bicarb is the ingredient that the dentist does NOT want you to know about as it puts them out of work. Bicarbonate of Soda also freshens breath and thoroughly neutralize's bacteria. Try it, and tell everyone!

I wouldn't recommend bicarbonate of soda, particularly if your teeth are already "thin" because bicarb is very abrasive. I certainly couldn't recommend lemon juice, because of its acidity. It sounds like you have some acid erosion, and the yellow colour is from the dentine, which lies under the surface enamel and is naturally yellow. As the enamel thins, the yellow dentine is more visible. Erosion would be made worse by stain removal using these "home made" remedies. Unfortunately there is no DIY response to the problem - you need to see a dentist. In the mean time, avoid acidic food and drink, such as coke (even diet), other fizzy drinks, fruit juice, wine etc

I have a brown line running through the enamel of my teeth My dentist said its just a discolouration but it Would help if I had anterior composite restoration I don't smile because my teeth look dirty. I am Very conscious of it. My mum said she would pay To have it done but we are apprehensive because For five teeth it will cost nearly £300 and we Are not sure it would be a good idea or not

I have the same, it's not discouloration. I had antibiotics when I was 2 which caused my actual teeth to come out brown. Nothing could be done about it, you can't scrape it of. The only thing is having crowns which cost a lot of money.

I suffered with this for about 5 years, where i would twist the hair on my head into small knots and then slowly pull the knot until the hair would rip out from the roots, i would then either chew the hair, mainly crunshing the knot with my teeth or would rub the hair and knot on my skin, then would generally hide the clump of hair until i had a collection then would put it in the bin. I never realised that other people suffered from this. i felt that to stop doing it, i had to wash my hair more as it seemed i pulled out more hair when it was dirty or full of products, almost like i was cleansing myself by pulling the dirty hair out, i also found it was near on impossible to produce a good knot whilst my hair was wet. i manage not to do it much at all now unless my hair is dirty or if i'm really stressed. I hope this helps anyone that is suffering at the moment. x

I'm 13 and I have yellow teeth. I have never smoked and I hate tea and coffee. I don't drink wine either. It's embarrasing. My dad has yellow teeth but he smokes and drinks tea all the time! My mum drinks coffee but has lovely White teeth. I have has no fillings, teeth removed or anything, I go to the dentist every 6 months and brush my teeth 2 times a day and floss once a day. I have had yellow teeth ever since my baby teeth fell out. I don't know what to do? Is there something wrong with me? :(

Theres nothing wrong! Some people have naturally yellow teeth - if your teeth are the same shade of yellow throughout, then this is just your natural tooth colour. If however they are blotchy in colour; white/yellow pigments. then they are stained - whitening toothpaste should help with staining. Ask your dentist for further information - don't be scared to ask!

Hi I'm thirteen years old and I hate my teeth. Next month I should be getting braces from an overbite, but I can only get silver. My teeth are slightly discoloured from an illness when I was younger (not sure what it was) and it's stained my teeth. I've been using teeth whitening and I've been brushing my teeth twice a day for three minutes, and they've got a little better, but not much difference. Does anyone have a way of making them seem cleaner without getting them bleached? Thanks Abbey
