hi firstly im 18 so this is really bothering me as you iamgine any erectile problems are bad enough anyway without being so young, however to explain when i have an erection, the penis itself is hardish, but when i tense for example when masturbating or what you would do when penetrating, i can only hold it for a short time and even when its being held by some muscle or something its as though the muscle is very weak as when lying down it doesnt hold the penis up vertically and when stood up slight pressure pushing down on the penis just causes it to lower even though im tensing it, i cant beieve its erectile dysfuncction, im really too young for that, what else could it be. plus im too embarrassed to go to the GP thanks.

Hi, I am a 54 year old male, I was diagnosed with M.S. in 2006, prior to this I had what my partner classed as an over active sex drive with no erectile problems. I was paralyzed from the chest down for the best part of a year and when I eventually recovered I found that I could obtain an erection but cannot maintain one. I have tried numerous tablets prescribed by my G.P. however I only manage a couple of minutes even with the medication. Is a penile prosthetic an option and can this be obtained on the N.H.S.?

Over active sex drive ? no, men majority have a stronger libido than woman and sometimes woman think that its over drive when they cant keep up... Gregor, really happy to hear you have regained your body after such a long time..Good news.. Has the Doctor given you are medical reason of the erection issues.?? Understanding he has given you medications, but what of a explanation??.. Also has the rest of your body that was paralyzed, has this come back to the fully strength of prior. Leg muscles etc..?? Perhaps your body is still regaining strength.. and the emotional strain you possible felt, as it was a considerable time... Get some blood test see if something is amiss and check your testosterone levels etc.. Age is also a possibility for some changes and changes can often happen rapidly.. Speak to your GP about the prosthetic, as you have been to date able to get medication so asking for advice on the prosthetic should be a easy conversation for you.. If not possible with the Doctor you have, seek a second opinion overall on all options and tests and you want to know the cause. Doctors are like any trade person, some better than others... Take care Gregor....

Two things: for your weight problem, you need to be getting some exercise, but I would think you would need this to be supervised by a M.D. for the first phase. Secondly, for your lack of confidence and poor self-esteem, I would suggest seeing a psychotherapist.

im 16 and have the exact same problem my girlfriend wants to have sex but i know it wont stay up as weve done oral and it hasnt really i honestly do not have clue what the problem is and need help!!

Hi, I am 36 years old and after having a mechanical injury via an improperly fitted bicycle seat to my perineum, I suffered with perineum pain, numb penis & erectile disfunction. Once this settled down after about 6 weeks, I helped move some friends house and the heavy lifing caused the problems to return. Those problems have since settled down a little and my doctor said I have Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome. After a few weeks, I had strong testicular pain and lumps which felt like "noodles", which turns out to be a varicocele on my left testicle. It is extremely painful when I sit or stand, especially for long periods in my office. I also have the issue where my penis goes cold a lot, especially when I sit or stand. Walking around or laying down seems to give slight relief to these problems, but it comes back when I stop walking. I have had a scan at the hospital, and have seen my GP, who advised me that it is varicocele on my left testicle and small cysts on both testicles but that I have to live with things for at least a further three months, as due to the cost of seeing a specialist, they wont see me just in case it settles down by itself. Is there any long term problems that can be caused by the regular cold spells to my penis, and is this caused by the enlarged veins? I am extremely worried about this, and my doctor is extremely blasé about it all and just puts it down to the CPPS. I just want to know that I am not causing any long term damage to my sexual function & my fertility.

There can be many types and causes of erectile problems so it is best that you see your GP to determine the cause. Don't be embarrassed, doctors deal with these problems all the time! Your penis size difference between flaccid and erect doesn't relate to this and is completely normal. A tight foreskin could be related however so see your GP about both of these issues.

Cialis has just been passed for people who have prostate problems by the FDA in USA. Therefore combating two problems at once. I would imagine you are taking Poscar or Flomax. You could always switch to Cialis to treat and stop taking the Finasteride which causes erectile dysfunction. Speak to your GP they should be update on this.

My husband is 57 he suffers from intermittent claudication affecting his leg. He also suffers from erectile problems but when visiting a doctor they just try to palm him off with Viagra. I am sure his erection problems are connected to the claudifcation and should be looked into a bit further. He can get an erection but it is not as firm as it used to be and it is not very consistent making sex very frustrating at times. Why won't doctors take it more seriously and what should they be doing for it?

Erectile dysfunction I incredibly common. Please don't ever be embarrassed about it as we as healthcare professionals see loads of people with it. As discussed the best option is to see a healthcare professional and have some investigations to exclude any serious underlying condition. Once we have excluded this, there are lots of treatment options. Some Psychological therapies, The PDE5 inhibitors (tablets such as Viagra), however if these don't work, there are other options. We sometime use 'muse' which is a urethral medication or pumps and elasticated rings to manually achieve erections, there is also the option of an injection (which sounds far worse than it is!). The issue here is that erectile dysfunction can really depress people and causes relationship problems, and these medications and therapies are there to help. Don't sit there in silence there really is something that we can do about it!

I suffer from a condition called Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES). It is caused by compression of the Cauda Equina, which is the bottom part of the spinal cord where it branches off; a bit like a horses tail. If a part of the Cauda Equina is crushed, especially between the L5 S1 vertebrae which supplies the sexual organs, bowl, bladder legs. This can cause erectile dysfunction. In fact if you experience loss of erectile function and it is combined with lumber back pain, problems urinating, numbness around your perineum/sexual organs, it is a warning sign you could be suffering from the onset of CES. If you have these symptoms it could be a medical emergency, see your GP! If it isn’t dealt with swiftly and the nerve is not decompressed quickly it could leave permanent nerve damage, and consequently sexual dysfunction, incontinence, mobility problems, chronic pain. Please C4! Can we dedicate part of a programme to Cauda Equina Syndrome to raise awareness, it is a devastating condition and not as rare as the medical profession think. There is a fantastic UK based charity that supports sufferers and carers - www.caudaequinauk.com

Yes please. I have all these symptoms but gp thinks it's in my head.I am completely debilitated. Can anything be done to help?

You need to ask your doctor to refer you for an urgent mri scan. You must insist on it.

There's nothing wrong with masturbating once a day, but masturbating less frequently will likely result in firmer erections, so you may want to try that. Being in good physical shape can help significantly with erectile function too, so make sure you're getting regular cardiovascular exercise, such as running or cycling. Yohimbine and l-arginine are non-prescription options for treating ED (Erectile Dysfunction) that you could look for in a health food store. ED has many potential causes, so a trip to the doctor might also be a good idea to help find the right solution for you.

Hi, I'm 18 years old and have had a problem with erectile disfunction for as long as i can remember, i know that it's due to performance anxiety but really need to know how to deal with it. It only happens for the first few times with a new partner after that the nerves reduce and i have no further problems. I try to remain as relaxed as possible and as far as i'm told i have nothing to worry about as far as my performance goes.

Hi Baz, did your Doctor/Urologist do the PSA tests because they didn't even offer or mention them to me before they even suspected Prostatitis. All I had was the DRE test which I'm sure triggered off other symptoms as well. Now that I have confirmed Chronic Prostatitis I asked about the PSA test and all I got was they wouldn't be worth doing because they would be high due to my chronic prostatitis!!! My symptoms are still numerous and vary from time to time: urinary frequency, urinary urgency, pain in the pelvic area aggravated by long term sitting, pain or discomfort during or after ejaculation, discomfort with aching pain radiating from the rectum, feeling of golf ball size mass in the pelvis or rectum, discomfort/pain in penis, supra pubic pain, pain between scrotum and anus radiating to tailbone, lower back pain, groin pain, pain during urination (disuria), frequent urination at night (nocturia), reduced stream, incomplete emptying of the bladder, hesitancy, discomfort or relief after bowel movement, clear discharge from the penis during difficult bowel movements. Secondary to the persisting symptoms, anxiety, depression, loss of self-esteem, loss of sex drive and social withdrawal can develop. Had antibiotics: Ciprofloxacin, Doxycycline and put on Flomaxtra. All didn't seem to work and made me feel worse; being light headed, nauseous and even blacking out on the odd occasion. No bacteria or blood has been found in the urine test. Just on pain killers and taking Saw Palmetto at the moment. I've had CP/CPPS (chronic prostatits, chronic pelvis pain syndrome) for 10 months now and my urologist mentioned he wants to do a Cystoscopy and prostate drainage for further investigations. Having to go part time at work due to symptoms, Damn this PROSTATITIS!

I would definitely go to your doctor for advice. It could related to a vascular problem (as you have indicated) which may be easily treatable. Erectile problems can be embarrassing and a taboo subject for men so don't feel hesitant to see your GP. It may also be caused by a physical injury or simply a more psychological issue where you are so worried about it, you may be getting stressed and adding to the problem. Either way, go and get in investigated!

I am 60 years old, married for 33 years, 2 children and have always enjoyed an active sex life. I have never had any erectile problems but in the last year or so I have had very 'dull' orgasms. There is no 'rush' of semen, it is almost as if there is a blockage somewhere and the ejaculation occurs inside me - a 'backfire' almost. Perhaps that's normal once you reach 60 but it's embarrassing to talk to my GP about this as he's an old friend. Can you advise?

You may be experiencing retrograde ejaculation. This can be caused by prostate surgery, diabetes and some medications. I assume your GP is an old friend because you have been seeing him for so long (not cuz you see a mate about medical problems). He is there to help you, he knows about all these conditions and I PROMISE you he has treated many men with similar problems before. If you have recently had surgery, talk to the surgeon, if not, it is likely that there is medication that can fix this for you so talk to your GP. You'll be embarrassed for 2 minutes before you realize its not so bad and then you can get back your sex life! If you REALLY don't want your GP to know then you need to see another one and probably at a different clinic.
