  • Doctor examining a patient's bloated stomach with suspected Flatulence

    Flatulence

Often referred to as passing or breaking wind, this happens when your body needs to get rid of the excess air that builds up from drinking and swallowing food and saliva. Read more →

  • Doctor examining a patient with suspected IBS

    Irritable Bowel Syndrome

One of the most common disorders of the digestive tract, featuring recurrent abdominal pain and intermittent diarrhoea, often alternating with constipation. Read more →

Following a bout of diarrhea due to illness, about half a year ago, my whole intestinal system has never been the same. I now pass normal looking stool about 3 or 4 times a day, usually with 1 before breakfast and 1 during or after. These come out really quick, and smell very acrid and acidic, and sour. I have a lot of flatulence throughout the day and when out with people I suppress this resulting in bloating but ultimately forced discharge of gas in the most embarrassing places and moments. Before the change, I was doing 1 or 2 poos at most daily, which smelt little if anything, with little flatulence, so little I never notice I even farted. I don't think I have IBS as I don't have any pains or constipation. Before consulting a doctor I'd like to know if you could shed any light on it.

Hi I am 54 and have been suffering with IBS for over 30 years now. I seem to have the pain under control but still suffer with the constipation and diarrhoea. Over the years I have tried many different laxatives, fibre supplements etc and also increased my intake of fibre and veg mainly via soups in my diet. Over the last 6-7 months I have had really bad flatulence and it has become very smelly over the last 4-5 months. I have been taking Macrogol laxatives since January took 3 a day for 5 day then 1 daily. Doctor reckons I may have to take them forever and has suggested I take 3 a day for 2 weeks. I am taking Mefenamic Acid tablets for joint problems and have a Mirena coil fitted. The smelly flatulence is ruining my life I have bought charcoal tablets to see if they will help with the smell, can I take these along with my other medication? I am also thinking of trying Colonic Irrigation

if you go to Food Hospital on facebook they discuss one very specific probiotic that is targetted at the stomach and will solve everything

Please do have a colonic treatment as it really helps my clients and you feel great after it:) Because your problem has been on going for a while you may require aprox. 3 to 6 treatments to clear out and bring back muscle tone to you Colon so that you can go everyday day without laxatives and help with your flatulence problem. The regular use of laxatives will only make your colon muscles lazy and more reliant on them.

For the last few years, i have been having an increasing problem with flatulence. Some days (and nights) it is almost constant every few minutes, and always smells bad. I eat a balanced diet and it doesn't seem to matter what i eat, it's the same. I don't have any other problems with bloating or constipation, and my stools are normal, (so i don't think it's IBS). Despite this i have had the usual laxatives and so forth from the doctor, which unsuprisingly has had no effect. On the Embarrassing Bodies show, the doctors seem to take conditions seriously, and refer patients to specialists if they can't make a quick diagnosis. Sadly, this doesn't seem to be the case with local GP's. I've heard of people being sacked from their jobs and even committing suicide because of this problem, so it should be taken more seriously. Everything you read about flatulence attributes it to the intake of air, fizzy drinks, not chewing food enough, but i think with me (and some of the other people above), that it is a result of another unknown gastroenterological condition.

I'll answer here for Loz who responded to my question above, as this site doesn't seem to let you have a running Q&A. Even though i have had this increasing condition for a few years, it is only in the last few months i have been seeing my GP about it. They don't seem to know what the cause is and are just trying everything in a process of elimination i suppose. I have had laxatives and Domperidone, which supposedly speeds up digestion and passing of food, but they didn't help (me) at all really. Although i don't have any of the symptoms of IBS, they have just recently given me peppermint oil capsules to see if they work. These are usually given for IBS, but i will have to wait and see if they help. I think the GP has to eliminate every common known cause, before they send you to see a specialist. I think it's best to see different GP's at your practice if you can, as they may have different ideas and knowledge on the subject. Have you been to the GP Loz?

I had my gallbladder removed about a year ago. But ever since I've been experiencing terrible wind after meals. I'm vegan so thought I was experienced with issues of wind but it's not the normal flatulence I felt before, my whole stomach bloats up and the smell is absolutely rancid (think dog farts) and hangs in the air for hours after, and the smell hangs on my underwear. I need to go every 20-30 seconds or it gets very uncomfortable. After fatty meals I get diarrhea so I avoid these, and have assumed it was fat that causes the flatulence. To some degree I can avoid the wind by eating a mostly veg/ fruit diet with some carbs like bread and rice, but something as little as spread on a piece of toast or my soya milk will set it off again. Does anyone have any clue on what this is or how to solve it? It only happened after I had my gallbladder removed

Blame it on someone near you. Look around and be like urgh who was that along with eeveryone else

I suffered the same for about 1 year. I underwent many tests including endoscopy but nothing serious was wrong. I took all types of anti acids but the condition continued. Early this year, I underwent food intolerance test and I was told to stop eating some of the food - wheat, mushroom, ginger, beans etc etc. As soon as I stopped eating this food, my stomach is normal and no more smelly farts.

Hi, im 27 and have end stage kidney failure and suffer from bad flatulence, it got worse when I was struck downwith KF, any one if this is normal?

I am 53 and single. I fear getting into another relationship because I cannot control flatulence during sex. All the research I have tried to do brings up only vaginal flatulence and that is not what I mean. Surely this doesn't mean I am the only one.

Hi, there, this website is linked to a Channel 4 medical programme.... it does not purport to answer medical questions which are best answered by a medical professional... that is, your Doctor! the blurb at the top says "You can share your experiences and thoughts with other Embarrassing Bodies site-users below" which is what we are doing... As a sufferer myself, I have found these 4 links below to be some of the best on the internet describing the problem of flatulence. Also the FODMAP diet may be of interest, but I suggest only reading advice from Monash University which is where the research originated from. There is also a huge amount of unsubstantiated guff written about flatulence which may, or may not, work for individuals. DYOR. https://mindbodydoc.wordpress.com/2008/08/24/all-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-farting-but-were-too-embarrassed-to-ask/ http://www.salon.com/2000/02/24/farts/ http://www.gasbgon.com/wt_paper.htm and of course... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatulence There is also a company in the UK called Shreddies who are selling (pricey) flatulence filtering underpants... no idea if they work, I have some on order. Hope that helps... myself, I now live in social exclusion... I have just had to learn how to adapt to my new life...

Stools can be yellow because bile is deconjugated by bacteria in your small intestine. This bacteria also causes flatulence. I know this because I to suffer from uncontrollable flatulence and yellow stools. It's really horrible, ruins my life. both of these symptoms went when I was given a course of antibiotics for a skin condition. Needed two different types of antibiotics for the symptoms to go-amoxicillin and flucloxacillin. Really hope this helps, I'm really struggling to convince my doctor this is the case.

hi, i'm a 18 year old girl and i want to know if there is anything wrong with me. Every month, there would be at least 1-2 weeks of me having constant flatulence and sometimes, i don't even realize it because i can't smell it. But when I go out, all the people would be like staring me and talking about the smell. There have been times that I got so depressed about it because of this reason. I eat healthy and i go poo at least 1-2 times a day so I think it's not my diet habit that's causing this. I have been to my family doctor and talked about it once but he said i was normal. However, I still think there must be something wrong that's causing my body to do this but I can't figure out. I have been trying to avoid everyone, even my closest friends because of this flatulence smell. Please help me as I am very desperate to know the answer. Thank you.

Unfortunately, I am very familiar with all the comments about wind. It is an issue that can really disturb your professional and social life, and leave you psichological affected. I began having uncontrolled flatulence since 14 years old, I am now 25 and had to deal (ignore) with it through school and college. I went to the GP and got medication that accelerated my digestion (didn't work), got enzymes over the counter (didn't work) it made my wind worsen, did an endoscopy and found out that the passage from my stomach to my colon was fully opened but never understood if that was the cause of the excessive flatulence. I must say my intestines tend to get very sensitive when I am more stressed but that problem just started 2 years ago, so also not directly linked to wind. I don't know about the intolerances, but my flatulence occurs mainly all morning, and sometimes after lunch, I get all the bloating and often a lot of pain. But it is an all-day problem, and a nightmare, especially if I am nervous. I don't suffer from constipation but I release a lot of wind immediatly before I feel the need to go to the loo. This problem really is affecting my life and my happiness and I just wished the doctors had some more options and solutions to address it.

I am a 15 year old girl and i have had IBS for around a year and a half now, my symptoms are lots of stomach gurgling and lots of uncomfortableness in the intestine area. I get these symptoms every single day since they first started - I am not exaggerating. Other symptoms include flatulence and more sever pain occasionally. IBS is ruining my teenage years completely and this constant feeling of uncomfortableness for most of the day just gets me down so much and the noises restrict my social life greatly. I probably cry at least once a week due to my symptoms and what I am missing out in my life. I feel embarrassed and ashamed and the flatulence, noises and pain throughout my school day prevent me from achieving my best, I realise that stress about noises occurring just make it worse but it is a viscous cycle that I am not receiving the help I need to get out if it.

I found the same as you monica, I got it when i was 16, that was 5 years ago. From some cases of IBS i'd say I'd trade anything to actually be able to eat something without my gut rejecting it. I too have all your syptoms, and it ruined my remaining teenage life, socially. But despite all my depressive talk on here and talk, I still met a girl and several girls that havent minded my messed up body. I just had to improve my personality lol. If you're gonna drink with your friends then skip dinner, but otherwise never skip a meal, just eat plain bread for school/college and when you get home eat loads of dairy/veg/all the no no foods, so that you function as best you can all day round, because cutting out the problem foods completely will never work out. But if you're out with friends eat plain but drink water too...it helps reduce the gassy guts. Go to the bathroom regularly aswell...the water is a good excuse to. An outside job in the future might be a good idea if you like me dont want to be around others while working. hell you can help save the environment and animals maybe :) I've got it worst out of everyone, but what makes it worse is I dont stop being hungry...like i eat a roast dinner and then 3 hours later my hunger isnt a mere emptiness its full blown I havent eaten for 3 days hunger. Plain biscuits, bananas, plain bread, water, water melon too. Ham as a meat if you can manage. But make sure you eat your balanced diet real good at home

What is the temporary solution for uncontrollable flatulence?
