I have herpex simplex virus 1 as I had many years mouth sore colds. After Maybe 15 years I gave genital ulcers... Look like aphthous ulcers... I would like to know if Swab test will automatically come as positive cause of my mouth sore colds in past or it can come negative if it is not genital herpes but some diferent vaginal blisters.? Also is it possible that it can be this first genital outbreak cause by that virus 1 wht I had so many years? Or it has to be type 2? If it is type 2 it means I been infected just now? Cause first outbreak are 3--14 days or no symptoms at all..?

I had flu symptoms and it was extremely painful to urinate so i went to the doctors and was told it was genital herpes. Is there anyway of telling if you caught it was your last sexual partner or a previous one before? Also, can I catch oral herpes as well from giving oral sex with someone who has the virus? If I already have genital herpes. Im so confused, I dont know much about it, devestated to have it and i've taken antibiotics but the ulcers dont seem to go even though I am no longer sexually active. I feel like I can never have sex or oral sex again!

I was diagnosed with Behcet's disease in 2010 when I was 14 years old. It began with severe mouth ulcers and all the other symptoms shortly followed. However, this site says that there is a regular occurrence in mouth ulcers for Behcet's sufferers but I have not had a flare up for 4 years now. No more ulcers since that dreaded time in 2010. Is this also common? Fingers crossed it will carry on this way!

I went almost years without a break from oral lesions.. At that point I was diagnosed and the doctors started to try different medicines... I was put on steroids and it stopped the oral lesions almost completely... Could medicine be the reason for you not having them? Also, stress is a huge trigger, maybe you have been less stressed?

HI!!! I know that ulcers on the walls of our mouth and on our tongues are very common like stated above, however, i suffer from them quite frequently, causing me alot of discomfort. So I would like to know if there is anything that causes me to have such frequent ulcers. thanks

I'm am also 17, have only slept with one boy (who I have now been with for two years) and was unlucky enough to have the same problem. Mine did turn out to be herpes, and I was told that it was likely my boyfriend had got it from previous sexual relationships in the past, but hadn't shown any symptoms. It is very painful, and not a nice experience especially when you don't deserve such rubbish luck, but the symptoms quickly go once you take the course of pills. As sorry as I am for you, it makes me feel a lot better to know I'm not alone with this.. hope it's the same for you.

its a virus so unless medicine progresses amazingly, you're stuck with it. good news is though that your body should clear the virus in a couple of years so you wont have it any more. in the mean time you might want to have a chat with your doctor about smear tests. i have the wart virus and im happily married so its totally possible to find someone awesome. its actually pretty benign as STIs go as long as you keep up to date on your smear tests.

I have bachets decease and have had it for 3 years now. When it first happened and woke up and could hardly see or walk. I've lost my job, I've lost my kids my driving licence and my 3 bedroom houses.I've got memory problems. And a very weak left side I take prednisone, omeprazole, citalopram, and methotrexate. Sodium tablets. I use to get genital ulcers before I was diagnosed. The steroids keep me alive I was close to death. I wouldn't wish this illness on me my own worst enemy. But if you do have it good luck. I would love to meet someone who is going through the same as me

I started getting mouth ulcers and genital ulcers 13 years ago. I too was ref to gum clinic and went there for 10 years treating me for herpes even tho I had numerous blood tests, swabs and biopsies taken and never had a positive test for anything. Finally ref to a rheumatologist who said I could have bechets. I had a break from genital ulcers for about 3 years but are now back with a vengeance since having my baby. I can hardly walk this past week they are so painful. It's more difficult now I have 2 kids to look after on my own as husband is working and I'm still on mat leave. I have only told my husband. No one else knows I feel so embarrassed but its becoming increasingly obvious something is wrong as I can hardly walk. I feel I have done something bad to deserve this nightmare. I've been given colchichine tablets to help the inflammation but only recently so don't know yet if they will help. I have mouth ulcers constantly so hardly notice them now. Could live with them but the genital ulcers make life so hard. Can hardly sit to feed my baby, drive even lie in bed. Wish someone could help me get rid of them for good. I'm 36 now. Can't face the thought of having this the rest of my life.

Hi, I have constant mouth ulcers and genital ulcers and I have suffered from these all my life, not constantly but since I have had my one year old I seem to have them constantly. i have been to the doctors many times but they keep telling me i have bacterial vaginosis and I am very run down, i also had a blood clot in my arm 2 years ago despite me being only 8 stone and 27 years old and i have never taken the pill, i was told by my consultant I was just unlucky..i have been told by the doctors i am tired all the time due to me having 3 children...could I have the symptoms of Behcets..The ulcers I describe are constant down below but they come and go in my mouth since having my son, who is one I would have a bout of ulcers in my mouth every other week and down below is constant..I have had 7 lots of antibiotics in the last year these work for around a week after and then the symptoms come back..It's extremely painful..The ulcers down below are always filled with puss (sorry to much information..) and are extremely painful..Do you think that the mouth ulcers and genital ulcers are linked or do you think I am just run down..Which ever I would really like to get to the bottom of them and I have heard that my blood clot could be linked to behcets..Any ideas??

Dr. Calvin Brown out of Northwestern! I also see Dr. Zineb Aouhab. Unfortunately, they only take new clients in the beginning of fall, so around late September. But Dr. Brown has actually done research for the American Behcet's Disease Association, so he really knows the disease. I was prescribed Colcrys which is supposed to help with oral and genital ulcers. So far, it has worked on and off with my oral ulcers but it really works with genital ulcers. I felt one coming and starting taking Colcrys right away and it never developed into an actual sore and the stinging sensation was gone within a few days! So I definitely recommend getting in with Dr. Brown, even if it is a bit of a wait.

Kathleen, Have you had the mouth and genital ulcers? I can tell you I've been dealing with these symptoms of mouth ulcers for years and joint pain. No physician new what the cause of my problems were until last February I started having genital ulcers and about 4 months prior I started having abdominal issues. It wasn't until I started getting gential ulcers that Bechets was a possibility. Blood work after tests. Finally diagonosed with Bechets in Feb 2012. I have been on steroids...colchicine...cyclosporine... and now imuran twice a day... I feel as though my body is starting to reject it... My Drs. seem to have pushed my current complaints aside. My joint pain is becoming debilitating I have the exact symptoms that you have...if I were you I would definitely educate yourself on the disease and question your physician to what is going on.

trimovate helps my genital ulcers a bit. i akso get lots of lesions and cuts in the creases down below, which i put it on to aid healing. I have taken oral prednislone for years and to avoid weight gain, i now have learnt to recognise when my flair ups are going to occur, and rather than take a lower dose of prednislone daily, i take a higher dose for four or five days, and i think that helps prevent the flare ups from getting so bad. they used to be so awful, to the point i couldnt get up out of bed and was so lathargic and in pain with the ulcers on top! having sexual problems partly due to my scarring, which is really asffecting me too :( genital ulcers started at the tender age of 13 and were so hard to get rid of. there are good and bad days though x

hi i have suffered with really bad mouth ulcers for the last 15 years im now 34 .i have recently started to get genital ulcers which are extreamly painful. ive had every test done by my gp . my specialist is now saying it could be betchets and is refering me to another specialist . i know its not good but at least i might have an answer to whats wrong with me. im at my wits end.

Hi, I'm 20 and have been suffering from severe ulcers since a similar age and have only just been diagnosed. My issue was exactly the same, I wasn't taken seriously enough and passed from doctor to doctor. All I can suggest is making an appointment as soon as you have both mouth and genital ulcers as once they had ruled out the obvious herpes etc they were forced to look at beçhets.

reading all the above comments i can see that many people suffer from herpes, but with me its ruling over my life, hardly a day goes by that i do not have mouth ulcers, i have had them since 10 years or so, i am 26, but in the last couple of years they are getting worse and worse, i am on aciclovir tablets all the time, the doctor said once the ulcers go away and i keep taking aciclovir they won't come back, but when ever i am nearing my period they come back and don't go away for months..since last year i have started having the ulcers on my genital area as well, if anyone can help, knows any good doctors or medicine i would much appreciate it as i have done all tests and everything comes negetive, except herpes, and doctors say its my immunesystem that is not recognizing the ulcers and thats why not fighting these, i am confused sad and lost if anyne could pls help from their own experience or knows any good clinics, please help, thanks, sarah

I'm 42, live in Sydney (unusually I believe for this condition am Anglo Saxon) and started getting oral ulcers (about 6-12 at a time) from the age of 4. I've had atrocious genital ulcers- at one time non stop for over 2 years, skin an joint issues but no uveitis or cerebral effects thank heavens. Tried many meds including colchicine, prednisone, Imuran and probably others I can't recall. Methotrexate is working for me, although I still get the oral ulcers which to be honest I can deal with as I don't know any different! Been to two great Professors in Sydney that really know their stuff in this area. Life is pretty good now!

Hi, I'm also in Sydney and am "under suspicion" for Behçet's. Weekly visits to GP, blood tests ok, abnormal MRI on brain, neck injury due to whiplash, chronic fatigue, constant ulcers, fever and chills, IBS, more stuff but eyes ok.....seen several specialists. Am seeing an Assoc. Prof at Concord Hospital, who is great but worried he won't diagnose me but another appointment next week as flare ups are constant now and with young kids, life is difficult. Just wondering who you are seeing....all the best, I'm 45 years young!

Hi Helen, First diagnosed by Prof Ronald Penny at St St Vincents. Under the care of Prof Denis Wakefield (prince of wales). He is terrific and an expert in the field. best wishes and recovery. Xlouise.

I have been suffering mouth ulcers for as long as I can remember. Doctors and Dentists have never been able to give me an answer other than apthous ulcers. As a teen I suffered a genital ulcer which being young and scared I kept to myself. I am now 29 years old and still suffering mouth ulcers. Recently I had another genital ulcer which lasted 2 months, I visited the doctor who told me it was probably herpes and gave me acciclovir tablets. This didnt help but eventually the ulcer went by itself. 2 month's ago another ulcer returned, I visited my local GUM clinic (at this point I was 4weeks pregnant)and was given a negative result to all std's including the herpes virus. I attended regularly over the next month to have the ulcer monitored as it wouldnt clear. The doctor at the clinic believes I have behcets disease and advised me to see my gp to be referred to an immunologist. The ulcer is clearing but still suffering terrible mouth ulcers as usual. My own gp doesnt want to refer me to an immunologist but has decided I should see a gastro-enterologist for assessment instead. Ive been researching behcets and it does sound like what I am suffering but as I have had no proper diagnoses or advise I feel scared and unsure on what my next steps should be. I have a 10 year old boy who also regularly suffers bouts of mouth ulcers. Do you think this is linked to the behcets condition?

Hi, I can totally sympathise with you, with the symptoms you describe. I am going through pretty much the same pain and emotions as you and have a 10 year old to look after. My G.P suspects that I have Bahcets and I have been round the houses with different specialists, gastro, oral medicine and GUM (GUM was embarracing and degrading, especially when they said they thought genital ulcers were herpes, even though my G.P had already tested for that and got a negative result. I am currently waiting for a referral to Rhumatologist & Immunologist. Hang on in there, I know how hard it is feeling so poorly, tired and frustrated. Ahhhh will one consultant just confirm a diagnosis and start treating us with the right meds. Take care.

Awww! I cannot imagin what you must be thinking with your son getting bouts to. Keep going to the Doctors until they listen, thats what im doing now! I have different symoptoms cropping up regularly at the moment & am keeping diary & pictures & visiting the GP almost weekly! I am going to make a pain of myself until they listen! Thats what we all pay NI for after all.

I have suffered for years with constant multipal mouth ulcers and like the person on the show on the genital area also. I have tried many things to help but nothing ever has the best thing I found to help me is folic acid tablet although when at it's worst i did take twice the stated dose. they tend to keep the ulcers at bay but do come back if I don't take the folic acid for a week or so

Hi. My twin sister has Behcet's disease and I am currently being checked out for it (got ulcers at both ends, I know how you feel). There's so specific test. The main way they do it is if you've had 3 outbreaks of mouth ulcers in the last twelve months, plus genital ulcers, and one (sometimes two) other symptom(s), eg gastric discomfort (diarrhoea, bloated, passing wind a lot), joint pain or swelling, eye inflammation, or a positive pathergy test (they prick you and if it leaves a red spot, that's a positive). Arthritis research UK is a good site for looking up the disease, it's very easy to understand and they mention symptoms, so you can figure out which ones you might have. Good luck with your diagnosis. :)

Hi im 20 years old and was diagnosed with behcets 6 months ago after getting uveitus in my left eye, for about 6 months before this i would get mouth ulcers genital ulcers painful red nodules and constant severe joint pain.3 months ago the uveitus spread to the back of my eye, i currently have 15% vision due to a blockage in my eye. my mom suffered with these symptoms since she was 20 minus the eye problems, there is no cure of the disease only treatment for the symptoms. there is no actual way to diagnose it either blood tests dont always show up.

i get ulcers every 3 months when one goes another appears then they go the come back my doctor said its cause of my salt intake but i had ulcers from i was 13 i also have low vitaim d level could this be the problem? and also would it be bad idea to pierce your tongue if you get regular ulcers?

I used to suffer from mouth ulcers like the ones your talking about, couldn't eat drink I would be almost crying brushing my teeth morning and night, I don't really suffer now...it was a couple of things for me, the toothpaste or any mouthwash I used aggravated it colegate is the only toothpaste that is OK for me to use with a softer tooth brush. lip balm if I use it starts ulcers on the insides of my lips because although I didn't realise it I roll my lips like when your applying all the time. I also used to flick my back tooth with my tongue which used to set all the side blisters off..and also very hot drinks would be likely to set them off. I lost loads of weight because eating was so uncomfortable... so try and get some stews and mash potato, soup and bread...when your low on energy the mouth ulcers are worse..im just contious of not rolling my lips and flicking my teeth when I'm nervous or stressed and find the right toothpaste x I really hope this helps x

Unfortunately I don't think you can ever stop mouth ulcers from appearing but you can halt them and stop them growing bigger by applying Kenalog in Orabase paste before you go to bed. After max of 2 nights application they are gone! I swear by this and have been using it for 20+ yrs- it's a lifesaver :)

What is the most effective way in dressing "leg ulcers"? A TVN was instructing to use diprobase with warm water to wash the leg ulcers and then leave the bathe legs ulcers for 10 to 15 minutes and then wash again with warm water. After this procedure apply flamazine cream on the ulcers and cover it with non-adherent dressings and then cover with secondary dressing of mesorb bandaged in place by a cotton-like rolled bandage and then a net bandage. Is this correct? The ulcers is not responding to treatment in fact it is getting worse.

Wendy are you getting your eyes checked by a opthalmologyst??? I had those symptoms & mine turned out to be iritis & uvitis! I dont want to scare you if you havent already you need to pester your doctor for a referral! Treated early enough they can treat it with drops & steroids. The opthalmologyst will just put drops in your eyes & shine lights into your eyes getting you to look in various directions.(hopefully you wont have this but idf you do I would recommend you buy a prepaid prescription (£29 odd for 3 months) as I forked out nearly £60 in 3 weeks of appointments before finding out this existed. I too dont have the genital ulcers (thankfully) though have experienced 3-4 of the symptoms as well as blood tests coming back with the likey type to have Behcets.

My son is 26 and has suffered terribly with mouth ulcers since he was a teenager. He has had blood tests etc and has tried lots of different types of oral medication. Nothing seems to be helping him and the ulcers are non stop. I watched the show last night where they looked at ulcers, there must be a solution somewhere. Any help or advice would be well appreciated. Thanks.
