Hi my hair started thinning 7yrs ago after a breast abcess. I have been to numerous doctors abo amd all blood tests are normal. I was given aldactone 200mg per day. my hair stopped falling out but started falling out again 6months ago. I was referred to a dermatologist who took a 2 second look at my scalp and diagnosed me with androgenic alopecia but he will not carry out a scalp biopsy due to the side effects. I wanted to try dianette but he would not prescibe it. What else can I do? As a 29yr old female this is getting me down.

I'm going bald, I'm only 17. I also have hair on my cheekbones too. This makes me feel very upset and I can't talk about it to any one because I get so embarrassed. My hair is also thin and get greasy very quickly ! I don't even play around with it or wear hats. I've tried many shampoos but don't know what to do now. What can I do about my hair falling out and my cheekbones?

Hi Bill. Typically men who have high levels of the hormone testosterone generally have quite a bit of body hair. Strangely enough, the same chemical responsible for hair growth on the body can also cause hair to thin on the top of the head. The reason for this is because (for reasons still unknown to science) the hairs on the top of the head are sensitive to a chemical called DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) which is a form of testosterone. What happens next is that the hairs on the top of the head tend to go into the 'sleep' stage of their development, which means that the hair follicle will only produce thin, short, pale hairs. There are many treatments for this kind of hair thinning such as Rogaine, Procepia and Growthex. For example, Growthex works by putting the hair back in to the 'growth' phase so the hair follicle start producing thicker longer hairs. Have you tried any treatment?

Wait and see what your dermotololagist says i have been lving with it for nearly ten years and the most relief i get fron it is when i dye my hair as well as using t gel shampoo but also be warned i have been doing research into other treatments and they do say that sometimes hair dye makes it worse. best of luck x

Hi,I'm 18. I've had psoriasis for about 4 years now and its been getting worse recently. I have to say I have been dying my hair for all those years (even bleaching it numerous time from black to blonde) and apart from it stinging really badly when you first put it on, its been absolutely fine. I too had a bald patch but mainly the was because it is really itchy so I was breaking the hair with scratching it. Hope that helps!

My scalp has become very scabby and ive never had any issues with dandruff before, no nits. Ive been using t-gel and have been washing my hair less, which helps a little bit, but its really getting me down!

Ive been using T_Gel shampoo and have found it to be very effective. I wash my hair every day as it is usually a mess in the morning, for the first month or so I used T-Gel every morning and it cleared my scalp psoriasis. I now also use ordinary shampoo some days, but feel T-Gel really helped.

I straighten my hair every day for a month without using any heat protect product. I noticed that hair is falling from roots and immediately i stopped straightening . Now after a year without using straightener, hair is still falling especially when i wash my hair i see like 2 to 15 hair every time i penetrate my hand into my hair to wash it. Could result in baldness within a few years?

I wouldnt worry about it.You normally lose alot of hair everyday day.You are probably just noticing it more from being paranoid. I doubt it had to do with straightening.I have thin hair and have been losing about 20 or more when I wash. Its been 30 years since I noticed and I am not any thinner than I was.If you are worried talk to a doc but if you google it Im sure you will see its very normal.

2 yrs ago my hair started falling out in patches around the front of my head and a few patches around my ears and the back. luckily i had very thick hair so managed to hide it most of the time with help from my hair dresser. my doctor said this could be due to some troumer i had just had or my wheight loss, my best friend invited me round for a indian head massarge and she did rackie which i was unsure about but the very next day my hair stoped falling out. dont know if my friends work did the trick or if it was my time to get my hair back, anything is worth a try

I'm struggling too, I'm booked in to see my GP. I can't lose the weight and my hair is constantly falling out, is there anyone else suffering from this? I hope my GP can refer to to see a gynaecologist. I haven't had a period since April. Not been right since I had my little boy two years ago. Feeling very depressed with how I look as I can't lose the weight. I don't know how to stop my hair from falling out. Sorry for the rambling, thank you for reading this. X

I am 21 and I ve had alopecia for 3 years now :( i have lost about 20% - 30% of my hair so far. i ve tried most of the treatments ( steroid cream and injections, some other cream, which made my sculp red and itchy, zinc, iron, vitamins etc...) i am really good at hiding it, but as the treatments didnt work I am getting more depressed! not much is falling out at the moment, but nothing is growing either. its just the same for a year now. i also can see the hair which is falling out has got split roots. i havent got any other autoimmune disease. my step brother had alopecia areata as well. how can i trigger my hair to grow please?

Hi, I have just turned 25 and recently been told i have alopetia areta. I have a bald patch behimd my ear and the rest of my hair is very thin. My hair was falling out very fast and it was so much i dont know how i am not bald all over. The hospitalk gave me a tablet for thrush which brought the alopetia on im so angry as the doctors should know my uncle has alopetia but he doesnt have any hair on his body at all. I bought a wig which cost me £200 which looks amazing but too scared to wear it as i feel everyone is looking even though its 100% human hair and looks so natural it just doesnt feel right. I feel i am too young to be wearing a wig plus everywhere i look i seam to notice everyones hair its a nightmare and very scary. The only good thing is my hair has stopped falling out not and i have regrowth it is very small but hoping it will grow to my normal length. I had long hair now its sholder length. Nobody understands until it happens to them.

Laura I understand how you feel, almost 2yrs ago I noticed one day that I had a tiny patch on my head where hair was less, I did panic! It got worse, eventually the size of a 10p. It was very upsetting, and I am a regular at my hair salon, spending about 60 a month! I'm in my early 30's..a healthy person so I didn't understand why this could happen to me and I have no family history of it. The only ppl I could show it to was my parents, my boyfriend + my sister, I was too ashamed to let anyone else know what had happened. I went to my GP, she sent me for thyroid & blood tests which all showed up fine, after this I noticed a 2nd tiny patch behind my ear + a larger patch at the back of my head (only visible if i tied my hair up) that patch got to the size of a 50p - or bigger, so I booked a private dermatologist appointment, waited to see a female doctor who told me it was alopecia areata, which is not what I wanted to hear... because i'd already done some research, it of course upset me. I was given lotion to stimulate regrowth. I had a holiday booked already so I had to spend my time in the sun making sure my scalp didn't burn, or that nobody could see any patches.. I had to change the way I styled my hair too! I was paranoid and still am to this day even though my hair started to grow back in every patch, the specialist suspected it would.. and I got my mum to check all the time for new hairs.. I used dermovate scalp application. My hair looks the same as it did before this happened and it's such a relief.. I never want to go through that again. It sounds like your scalp will recover as you already have regrowth, it just takes time. To this day I believe it was the contraceptive pill that caused hair loss for me, I changed my pill 3 months prior to my hair loss.. I immediately stopped that pill (microgynon) and went back to my old one, I wish I'd never changed it, it was the only time i'd changed it - ever, I doubt I will again through fear of things like this. I still check my scalp to make sure it's all fine, I can't forget getting alopecia. I'm sure your hair will be just fine.

Hi Jd, Thanks for your comment. I really hope my hair will be ok. I am sick of not being able to wear my hair the way i used to. U have scared me a little as i changed the pill as well i was on mcrogyen now on the newest one but never noticed any hair loss since taking it. It was defo the hospital that started it which has made me scared to take any kind of tablets. How long does it take for full regrowth??? Im am very pleased for you to have full regrowth it must b amazing. I cant thank u enough for responding u have made me feel good about my hair.

My hair started falling out in october last year, first as with many other people it was a teeny patch, within 6 weeks this had quadrupled in size and the rest of my hair was thinnig dramtically. By end of January this year only about 10% of my hair left, invested in a wig and it's really helped my confidence, looks natural to those who didn't know me before and people have been really supportive at work as so much hair had gone it was obviously a wig. Had all the blood tests, no medical causes and so far remaining hair still falling out. Trying not to worry about it spreading to eyebrows etc in case that makes it worse. has also led to me paying for counselling as GP very useless about how low i felt as a result, said i was moderately depressed and sent me away with a website to look at and no instruction to return. It's helping but really can't help wondering why this has happened. Will try iron tablets after reaing other posts , but really recommend a wig as a way of being able to look in the mirror

Hello having lost some hair twice when pregnant, it grew back, then it started falling out rapidly which really worried me. I did a little research and decided it was probably a combination of stress and the happy pils I was on at the time (fluoxetine). But, having got rid of the major stress in my life a year ago (my ex!) and weaned myself off the happy pills a few months ago my hair is still falling out, and I would say I have lost over 50%. Luckily I started with very strong thick hair so others don't notice it but as I am still losing it I am now beginning to worry about it. I am having a blood test for thyroid this week but any advice would be appreciated.

When I was 17 I lost all of my long thick curly hair from alopecia, I was put on 12 steroids a day to try and help growth, didn't work, I had acupuncture in my head weekly, still didn't work. In the end after a year of trying everything, nothing worked so started looking at wigs, I then fell pregnant with my eldest (now 12)and my hair grew back after being told it never would! Since then 12 years ago I have suffered a few times and am again now, unfortunately nothing ever works apart from being stress free and happy. As hard as it is to try and be happy when ur worried about your hair loss, u just gotta try and not worry about it too much, have something to look forward too, take the stress and worry away and that's what's helped me each time x

I am 21 years old and have a bald batch on the back of my head. My hair is quite thin and is always falling out in shower ect but i have never had a bald patch like i have now. There are hair follicules there but i'm still worried. I changed my shampoo about a month or 2 ago and since then its been falling out and created this patch. Its quite sore near the patch and i'm very worried it will get bigger. I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow but i am worried they will fob me off and tell me they cant do anything. Anyone have any ideas.. Please help.

I feel for you. I'm almost 34 and it doesn't get any better. I've had laser three differnt times and I cried the first time they told me to shave my face (althought plucking was taking me in excess of 2 hours a day because i have a full face beard.) I shave like a man daily, in the shower/bath. Sometimes twice a day because it grows so fast. I feel like a vampire and avoid sunlight because of the embarassment. I've dated but it's always ended in heartache because they always end up finding someone more feminine and hair free. It doesn't matter the age, it's the same problem only worsened. I can't afford laser anymore as I need it continuously to slow the growth and barely afford my mortgage and daily living. It's a shame. If I didn't have my daughter I would probably commit suicide over it.

I am 15 years old, nearly 16, and i been ectremely worried about my hair recently. because it was quite dead I stopeed straightening it and now i only stragihten it about 5 times every 3 months. Recently my hair has drastically been falling out from the root. I dont know the cause or how to stop it but after I've washed my hair and I brush it I must loose about 200 hairs. I am extremely worried. I haven't got any cold patches yet however my hair is really starting to thin and I already have ectremly fine hair as it is

It is permanent, but you may have to get it done several times because it is all to do with 'killing' the hair follicle, and that can only be done at a certain stage of hair growth, but hair is constantly falling out and growing. So think of it as a batch process. It is permanent though (:

I have had 3 children in 3 years and breastfeed all of them until they were all 9 months old. with my youngest being 10 months now,my hair is falling out and have a large bald patch just behind my ear. I wash my hair with baby shampoo and dread brushing my hair as a lot comes anyway when I do so. I'm only 35 and this is really worrying me,my doctor said there is nothing they can do.
