    Pediculus Capitis

More commonly known as 'nits'. These are pin-head sized grey-brown, wingless insects that live by sucking blood from the scalp and leave their eggs glued to the base of hairs. Read more →

I've had 'head lice' for about 8 years. I have tried the wet combing method every 2 days and I comb it everyday dry, I also have tried many treatments such as 'lyclear'. It says it gets rid of all lice and eggs and it also has an after spray which prevents you from catching them again. However it does not work at all. It is meant to kill the lice but whenever I have used it, it hasn't helped at all. What's the best method to get rid of them?

My 6 year old has really long hair. 3 years ago, she was literally infested with lice. I used Hedrin which cleared them and since then, the only shampoo I use is the Vosene Kids shampoo. It is a 3 in 1 shampoo/conditioner with natural head lice repellent. She has not had head lice since 2009 :D With her very long hair, she would normally be 1 of the 1st to be infested so I swear by the shampoo. Good luck, I hope this helps.

I have a grandaughter who has suffered for nearly 2 years and I want to know where I can get the £50 treatment mentioned on this site as she is coming to me for a holiday she is 13years old and her mother has tried everything on the market but still the eggs appear.

Hi i would like to know what the company is called that come's out to treat head lice. My daughter is constantly getting head lice.

I am 17 years old from Australia and the past few days I have been experiencing itching everywhere! Scalp, breasts, stomach, hips, back, legs, ankles and lower privates. It's quite awkward especially in public.I'm constantly scratching for no reason, it's absolutely maddening. I have been doing my research and have looked up some possible theory's on what could be causing it, new soap, bodily lice or pregnancy is what I have narrowed it down to. I have no prior skin conditions and I have never had a reaction like this before. I have been using a new soap and since then I've been itchy but it does not explain why I am itchy on my head because I can't apply it to my hair, then again I am sexually active but I took a test 2 weeks ago and it was negative plus I just had my period and then again I could have bodily lice but I don't have any res bumps or marks. I have no rash just the itch and I'm going back to school I really don't know what to do is it just my soap or something more sinister? What's wrong with me? Please help.

don't worry, your not alone, my head is also VERY itchy all the time but I haven't noticed and lice either. I think this sort of thing must be normal for teenagers

I'm so fed up with constantly having to deal with head lice which my primary aged daughters catch and re-catch from their classmates. Is there any way a National No Nit day can be organised through embarrassing bodies where all school age children are encouraged to have their hair checked and if necessary dealt with on the same day? I know nits can never be fully eradicated but there must be a way of making them less prolific...?

The head of the penis is supposed to be sensitive, but for adolescent guys who grew up without ever uncovering their head, it can be TOO sensitive, as you have discoverd. Since you are able to retract your foreskin, it would be best for you to continue doing so while urinating and when showering, being sure to wash well under there. By retracting regularly and washing, after a few weeks it shouldn't feel as sensitive.

Firstly, Hedrin is not a chemical treatment, so you can use it often without fear of reaction or resistance. It does require two treatments though, 6/7 days apart to be effective, otherwise you are wasting your time, as it does not treat the eggs. I had this problem with my daughter for a while at her school. I gave up treating her - I just combed all the lice out every morning before and after school (about 15 mins each time). I complained to the headteacher (to be fair I am secretary of the PTA so that may have added weight), I spoke with other concerned parents and encouraged them to complain too. Eventually a letter was sent out on a Thursday of a long weekend, asking us all to check and treat our children's hair that weekend. It worked for us. Alternatively, neem (neam?) is some kind of oil that repels lice.. you can only try these things. I have an infant teacher friend who swears by the stuff.

i found all the conditioner treatments and lotions so time consuming and messy and ineffective too. i found a robi comb at the chemist for £20, which sounds a lot, but it is a very quick treatment. just comb through dry hair, it needs batteries and gives the lice an electric shock to kill them, repeat each day for 2 weeks, to catch all the eggs that are hatching and the kids hair will be free of lice. it's so quick and the lice don't become immune to it.

im 16 and ive had head lice all my life since primary school. i have a big family we all have head lice and cant seem to get rid of them. we have tryed everything, i need help badly im so sick of them and soooo embarrassed please help me....

Im 15 and i keep having trouble with head lice, it isnt terribly difficult for me to get rid of them but it is for me to keep them away. My sister (12 years old) has excema on her scalp which has just spread further and further since she was 2 and now it covers all the area underneath her hair. She has always had head lice and is limited to what she uses to get rid of them, but she doesnt seem to care. Its embarrassing for me and my mum as she scratches her head in public. I'm always paranoid that someone will see one in my hair espcially if its wet or if im really warm. Please help.

I had nits and lice when I was at infant and jumior school and my own children caught them when they were in infant and junior school. We had a lotion called Derbac put on at the time which was left on all night but was taken off the market years ago because of the ingredients. I know some people seem to get nits again and again and what works on one person another persons biddies as we called the lice are immune to. I have an old Derbac metal comb that has very fine teeth and it seems to be the only comb that actually grabs the eggs as well as the lice, it is priceless to me as you cant get them any more. I have used it on my own grandchildren too going over their head every night poor lambs. There are electronic lice combs which I have bought for all my children so they can use them withought having to use chemicals all the time and so far my family are staying lice free. Vigilance is a pain but so necessary.

hello im 13 and i always used to get lice my mum tried everything and then she found some advice in a magazine !!! if you coat all your hair in olive oil over night and put a shower cap on while you sleep this will kill all the head lice. in the morning use a nit comb to go through your hair to get all the lice out. BUT DOING THIS DOES NOT KILL THE EGGS only some, this means that you still need to nit comb the hair every day for about 4 days to try and get all the eggs out so that they cannot hatch ! HOPE THIS HELPS!

I'm having the same problem, I caught them off someone at school and they won't go away but don't use headlice repellant because the headlice will just get used to them and it's a complete waste of money. Put conditioner in your hair and brush it with the nit comb every day until you can't see nits anymore and tell your sister to do the same xxx

I had head lice while at university. They were passed on from the younger sister of a friend of mine in Spain. With five girls in the house we really struggled to get rid of them. In the end, we found the solution. VASELINE! Coat your hair completely in vaseline, wrap it up in clingfilm and leave for 24 hours. It will take a lot of washing to get the vaseline out but it suffucates the head lice and the nits can't stick to your hair. Have been nit free since!

Use a nit comb for the nits! Follow these directions- http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Head-lice/Pages/Treatment.aspx The dimeticone based treatments should be effective if used correctly. Basically this coats the lice and suffocates them. The repeat treatments are important. Also treat everyone you have close contact with.

Both of my girls constantly had head lice. My GP has said not to bother with any lotions as the lice can become prone to them. I bought a long toothed comb from the chemist (called Nit Free - about 10 pounds) and comb it through their hair every night when they are in the bath. This has helped so much and they are nit free!
