    Heavy Periods

Periods are annoying enough as it is, but when you're losing a particularly large amount of blood they can be very distressing. Read more →

Hi, i am 13 and i started my period nearly a year ago. The last period i had it was extremely heavy, i had to keep changing my pads every 20-30 minutes. I had terrible period pain and as a result of this i was sick twice whilst on my period on the same day. I have missed my period which was due at the beginning of the month, and i wondered whether there is a solution to period pain (apart from painkillers) and why my period was this heavy? Also do you think that because my period was so heavy that time it was sort of like two periods merging into one? Note: I have started using tampons.

are you using the highest absorbancy pads available? if not, then this will reduce the amount you need to change them! some women are heavier and have more pain than others. it is due to your hormone levels. no, it wasnt two period merging into one! that doesnt happen! (i am a biologist!) there isnt much you can do about period pain apart from painkillers. however if the heaviness and the pain starts to become a regular occurance then you should speak to your mum and go see your GP. i am not sure if they will give the oral contraceptive pill to someone your age but they might. the pill doesnt just act as a contraceptive, because it is a dose of hormones it regulates the level of hormones and elevates symptoms such as period pain and heavy flow. i hope this helps you. good luck!

I am thirty two and 6 months ago had my first baby. I had to have a emergency c-section and bled quite heavy during and after. Three months after having my baby i had my first period which was better that any other period i have ever had, it was not painful or heavy and only lasted 5 days. I then had 3 months without a period and i am now having my period, I am in my 10th day and it is quite heavy but i am having quite a bit of lower back pain. What is the normal length and should i see a doctor or is this just my body getting back to normal after having a baby.

I am travelling over seas for 3 1/2 weeks with a group of 60 teenagers, both girls and boys in a choir tour. We will be staying in hostels, where we have to share rooms with other girls of up to 12. The bathrooms will be shared and i am quite worried about my period. I have a heavy period and I often have to get up 2-3 times at night time on my heavy days and that is with doubling up pads. I am worried that I will leak everywhere. I am trying everything to make my period come a week early (there are some crazy ways!!)so that i only get the end of my period at the start of the trip, but nothing seems to be working and it ended up that my period came 1 week late instead of early. I have just finished my period and i am leaving for america in 19 days. Is there anything that I can do to make it easier for me in America. I was thinking about using the diva cup, but I am too scared to ask my mum or use it. Please help! P.S Please don't say that other girls go through it, because not everyone has a heavy period and they don't understand.

Am 20 yrs old, my period has been heavy ever since I started when I was 13yrs... The past 2 weeks my temperature has been up and down, but mostly up, burning up, and after a week of the up/down temperature I started my period for this month but its really really light, hardly anything its so light but I still have the pain of a heavy period that I normally have. It's now been 2 weeks of the temperature and its still going strong and a week of my period (not that it's much of a period). Am getting a bit worried. And because of the burning up temperature I can't wear more then a top which meant I got soaked in the heavy rain we had, so now got a bit of a cough.

I had the contraceptive implant put in about a year ago and were told that you could either have no period, a 'normal'period or a heavy one but I've been on for three months now and before that I was on for quite a while as well, there was only a week break between the two periods. They are usually light but sometimes quite heavy, is this normal or is something wrong?

I also have the implant. This is my third one now and I have had varying effects of periods over the past 7-8 years. This last one I've had Is now called nexplannon and for the first few months it was ok but for months now my periods have been heavy. Painful. And weekly with a day or two break In between. I have been taking the pill to manage my periods but 3 weeks ago I ran out and it's been awful ever since. They are very painful. Extremely heavy. But 3 full periods in 3 weeks is awful. Time to get back on the pill. Only thing is being pumped with all these hormones does nothing for your sex drive

Please help! I am a 27 year old woman and I have been on my period for nearly 2 months. I have irregular cycle so some months I miss my period which I am used to now. A month into my heavy period I felt this was not normal so I went to see my GP and he gave me Tranexamic Acid Tablets to take 3 times a day for 4 days. The heavy bleading has stoped but I am still bleeding but very light, sometimes very dark and clotted. I refuse to let my boyfriend close to me intimately because I feel so uncomfortable and I feel there's something wrong with me. Is this normal? Please help! THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

Hi, I am 14 and had my first period about 5 months ago, my second one started last Monday. Both times I got horrible pain and blood clots. Thanks goodness my second one, the one I'm on now, isn't so heavy as my first one, it lasted over 2 weeks and was really heavy! Is it normal to have some blood clots? How often should a pad need changing on a 1.) normal period 2.) heavy period? Thankyou! I pray this one or any others aren't as heavy or last as long as my first one!

If you are using some sort of pill that might be affecting it. I used the most common type of pill (microgynon) and although it was fine for about a year, I began to bleed while on it. It became really irregular and I had a period that lasted 6 weeks! If you're on the pill, go and ask to have it changed as it's very likely that that will be the cause. If not, it's worth going and just asking the doctor a few questions anyway. I know a few of people who have gone through what you are going through and it balanced out in the end. But they all went to the doctors and agreed that just hearing that it's fine from a professional puts them at ease.

Are you on any type of pill? If you are, it's likely that that is what is causing the irregular bleeds. I once used the most common type of pill (microgynon) and although it was fine at first, I began to bleed while taking it, not just during the breaks. I had a period that lasted 6 weeks! I went to the doctor and changed my pill, and it's all balanced itself out now. So if you are on the pill, go and ask to try out a different type. If you aren't, it's worth just going to the doctor to ask questions. I know a few people who had the same thing you are going through and they agreed that just hearing it was all ok from a professional put their minds at ease. Definitely worth just going to talk about your worries. That's what they're there for x

I am 16, and ive had my period for 3+ years. Its always been pretty heavy but lately its horrible, last period, 2 weeks ago, i went through a box of 18 tampons in one day. None of them had dry spots when i took them out. Its so horribly heavy that I don't know what to do. My aunt said that when she was younger she had her uterus scraped, because she had heavy periods. Since she told me that ive been debating on asking my doctor about it, but i have done some research on it, and they say it causes infertility problems in the future. I don't know what to do, and my mom doesnt like that idea. Also, I don't know if its genetically transferred, but my mom has endometriosis, could i get it?

I'm 43, a virgin, and have always suffered from heavy periods. Once I'd have one heavy day and then it would graduate down over the next three to four days. Now I have two days of spotting and then two really heavy days with flooding and heavy clotting and then one medium day and two days of gradual reduction followed by a week or more of spotting (usually a dirty brown). I double up pads for security and sleep with a towel between my legs at night the first two heavy days and stay close to a loo to try to avoid accidents - not always successfully. I have stomach pain and severe bloating before my period where I can look pregnant. This is now seriously affecting my life as I'm turning down invites to go out on certain days - and now I've been asked to be a bridesmaid. If my period doesn't skip and move on as it usually does after a few months of semi-regularity I'll have to say no as I don't want to risk an accident on the day. I'd kill to have a 'light' period!

Hi im 14, I got my first period January 16th 2012 and was very light and lasted 2days, im unsure if i had periods in Feburary and March but i know i got a period around April 7th wich was very light and lasted 3-4days, then i skipped 7months and had my next period November 17th 2012 and that was very heavy and lasted 10days, then my next period was December 24th 2012 and that was heavy and lasted 8days, then i skipped 5months again and got my next period May 29th 2013 that was very very heavy(crazily heavy) and it lasted 8days and i havent had one since, ive basically missed 2months again, so within just under 19months(without counting March and Feburary as im unsure if i did) ive only had 5periods

I dont get any of this and my periods are reasonably heavy. I would go 2 ur GP xxx

I'm 48, have always had normal periods. Recently my periods are less frequent which would be due to the menopause. This month however, I have had an exceptionally heavy period. I have had to use tampons and towels and change them every couple of hours. So far the period has lasted 5 days and doesn't seem to be stopping. There are a lot of blood clots too. I have never had a period this heavy. Could this be a symptom of the menopause too? Should I wait to see if I have another period like this or should I go to the doctor straight away?

I'm having the same problem right this minute. Haven't had a period for 5 months, had blood tests that showed I was in the early stages of the menapause. Started bleeding last week, but last night woke in the night soaked through the biggest tampax and two sanitary towels. Today had been a nightmare, my stomach is so sore and painful and feels similar to contractions. The bleeding is extremely heavy, changing every hour or less and bleeding through tampax and two towels. Have client clots, standing in the shower I can see blood coming out. Also blood coming coming out through a tampax into the toilet. Feel faint and heart pounding. Dreading going to bed. Did you see a GP as really think I need to see someone.

I've been having periods for just over a year now, i'm 14, almost 15 in a few weeks. I had a period in June, which was fine. It was heavy but it lasted a week. I havent had a period since then, but this was to be expected because i am still irregular. However, the period i am having had now last for 7 weeks and it seems still heavy? Is there anything i can do apart from going to my gp?

I get that Its were you dont have a period for so many moths so it builds up then when you next come on it will take a time to clear out of your body. I would also go get checked at your gp as you may have what they call pcos always best to get checked out x

helllo, i'm 16, i started my periods when i was 12. my periods work like clockwork, i have them every 17 days but the 1st and 2nd day are soo heavy that i end up changing my tampon every hour - i use heavy flow tampons. Also, on the 5/6th day after my period has finished i get a mini period for a couple of days which is heavy enough that i need a pad and i also get a lot of dark brown discharge round this time. Also, whenever go running my heavy bloody discharge starts and i need a pad in then too! This is really annoying, especially because it means i only have a couple of days gap that i can do anything with my boyfriend! thanks.

Hi, im 16 and i was maybe your age or younger when i started my period and i had that problem to, its totally normal and you shouldnt be worried! I wouldnt start taking anything now to cut down your period as i would wait till at least 1 and a half years before taking anything to see if things changed. Although i got some tablets off my doctor that started with a M cant quite remember what they were called and they really helped!! hope this helps x

if you are having no period or heavy periods it could be likely you need to go on the contriceptive pill, it gives you a period every month and you wont bleed heavy as it has worked for me but also see your GP. he might diagnose you with something like he did me polysystic overies. hope it helps.

If you are collapsing with your periods i would go to your gp. Having heavy periods is normal i get them myself but you may also be suffering with anemima (low iron) which would cause heavy bleeding and fainting. A quick blood test will tell you what is going on and can be managed with iron tablets.

Hi I'm 22 and have been on the pill since was roughly 15. I have always had heavy periods, every period is heavy and It is majorly annoying as I go through a whole packet of extra absorbent pads in 4 days. Any ideas on why it is always heavy?

Have a look at some of the other answers to heavy periods to let you know some of the causes. And I hope you don't mind me saying, it doesn't sound abnormally heavy, one packet of what, 12 pads in 4 days? Sounds ok to me, but then I used to go through 3 packets before I got help. If you are worried tho, please see your GP, it may be worth talking about trying a different pill or perhaps some tranexamic acid.

Hi have you ever thought of keeping a period diary to keep track of your symptoms and to see whether there is a pattern/not. This may help you and your drs if of any help diagnose the cause of why your periods are so heavy. Hope my suggestion is a great help!

Hi everyone, so sorry to disappont u all. But i'm 33. have been suffering from severe period pains and heavy bleeding since age 12. After an unsuccesful IVF treatment in my 20s i was diagnosed with endo (many years of heavy period and pain and visiting doctors). Had it removed but came back again after 6 months with same heavy pain. 2 years ago aother IVF, got pregnant but had miscarriage after 6 weeks. Period pains are still bad, but since miscarriage not many bloodclots and always on time compare to before when i never knew when i get my period. Anyway, what i'm trying to say is that no one cares about this condition and they not doing anything to find a cure. No one believes us what we go through. I've been married for 13 years and my hubby still doesn't believe me. Because of all this i can't get pregnant(been trying for 10 years) and now going to adopt. Good luck girls and pray for a cure. I am 21 and have had irregular periods since I first started at the age of 15. Whenever I did have a period, they were very heavy, very painful and lasted longer than 5 days. From the age of 16, I went on the Contraceptive Pill but then had to swap to the Combined pill. I took this pill for 3 and never had a period. I came off the combined pill when I was 19 and didn't have a period for 5 months. It wasn't heavy nor too painful. I then missed a month and had another period, again, not too heavy nor painful. I then didn't have another period for 6 months which I believe was "induced" by having sexual intercourse. Since November last year (08) I have gone back to the combined pill and had blood tests on my hormones which seem to be relatively normal. Yet, I'm still concerned as to why I'm not getting normal periods. I spend a lot of my time away from home in Europe for several months so it can be difficult for me to see a doctor. I was just wondering if you have any suggestions for me? Thank you
