I have a small what feels like a hole at the tip of my nose but under the lining. I'm sure it wasn't there before, but has been since I had a bad cold and my nose felt really bruised on the end then got an infection in the skin (outside) which has now gone. The hole was there after the bruising feeling but before the infection. Could this be a perforated septum forming? I can't find anything that answers it anywhere!

This past January I had a septal button put into my nose, because I had a very large hole in my nasal septum from a previous surgery I had when I was little. Just recently, the right side of my nose has been sore and swollen and making the right side of my mouth to hurt. It hurts to blow my nose, eat or even smile. What should I do and why is my nose hurting this much since my surgery?

i have a perforation of my nose and have been to see an ENT specialist who told me there are three options to help, first being nasal dooshing, second a button to fit the hole or third the operation to fill the hole. i would like to know what is the best option to take/consider.

Hi Natalie. I'm 3 days in from the op now.. Can you tell me how you're doing and how was it when the splints came out. Many thanks

I am feeling so much better now nose still sore with the scabs. I did not have any splints put in it was just a button fitted. I got nuralga after as they had injected or cut into a nerve and that was the reason for the pain in my face. So it could b something like that. Hope u r feeling better soon bev as I am NOW. Just keep taking pain killers every 4 hrs and ibuprofen in between.

Five years ago i must have scratched inside my nose and ever since then i have been compulsively picking the scab that forms inside my nose. I now have a huge hole on the inside of my nose. Almost all of the cartilage is gone. It stops me from getting to sleep at night and is always bleeding. Its not a matter of not picking it because I just cant not pick it. I have been to the doctors about this problem and at first they prescribed theropy and then surgery but they havent followed it up. I need to know if there is anything that can be done to fix it. It is a huge problem. Thank you.

I have a tiny, about 1-2 mm in diameter nasal septal perforation. Since it's that smaal I make a whistling sound with my nose that wakes me up at night or won't let me fall a sleep. My ENT doc said, that there isn't a septal button that small. I have lupus which causes a lot of scar tissue after a cut or operation and that makes me really-really-REALLY sceptic about surgery. Is there any other way to treat that little annoying hole in my nose?

What so I do?

After a considerable amount of acne on my nose, I began scratching it and squeezing it to remove spots, which has left my nose very red and inflamed. I thought that it would go away in a few months, but the redness is still there after about a year, and it is confined solely to my nose. I do not believe that there is any significant swelling or thickening of the skin on the nose, and if there is it is very small. I have no idea what I am suffering from, and it is very embarrassing; what is my condition, and how do you alleviate or stop it?

Hi, the doctors have seen it all before he really shouldnt be embarassed to go. You can buy a natural salt solution from boots I can get the name of it if you want to try it - it helps clear the inside of the nose; also try vaseline. The doctors can also give him a cream to use to help relieve any associated pain - I think you need a prescription for it so he will need to go to the doctors for it. good luck

for a hole of 5-6 mm you may be able to have a septal button fitted... Whether or not the hole gets bigger can depend on a number of factors, whether or not you clean out your nose and whether or not there are any other reasons for the hole - fungal, bacterial etc... The worst thing you could do is pick your nose or clean out aggressively with tissue / wet wipe, this will likely enlarge the hole... with a hole of your size a button could likely be successfully fitted and would hopefully help stop any further bleeding or crusting issues you may have...

so scary isnt it. lots of my friends noses have collapsed from k one way we used to tell if it had gotten worse is to (bit weird) shine a little torch (like the ones on the lighters) up one side of ur nose and see how much light comes out the other side. i can see the start of a hole most times when i blow anything out of my nose its kind of the shape of the hole but yeh, super scary. my m8 needs to see this page the hole in his nose is so bad it keeps him awake and causes him alot of distress but he carries on doin wat he does an wont go to the doctors ):

Just a FYI for people here... I broke my nose in '96 resulting in a deviated septum. I had surgery to correct that in '97. Ever since then, I have had this hole in my nose. I honestly didn't think much of it for years. I had the usual crusting, dryness but nothing drastic. Anyways, I just now have learned what it is and how it came about through reading. I want to get mine looked at by an ENT or specialist. I don't know if it is growing, it always seemed to be about the same size. Anyways, I just wanted to say that I have had this hole for 16 years and nothing has happened to the outside shape of my nose. The hole I tried to measure tonight, it less than a Q-Tip head wide. So I think around 7mm or so, maybe 8mm. I am looking for someone in the area here who is well versed in treating this. Even if I can have it properly measured and then monitored every 6 months or so. I have read conflicting info online, lots saying if less than 1cm to leave alone and others saying if less than 1cm to repair to prevent it from getting worse. I have also read that there is no structural damage to the nose itself if the hole is less than 1cm but also depends on location et. I also read that buttons can make the hole bigger by eroding the edges of the hole. There is so much conflicting info it is very confusing. Since I have left mine for 16 years I may just leave it alone but I at least would like an ENT to look at it and let me know if there is any structural damage or if it has weakened the nose. I also fear the collapse but I think this is very rare.

Hi thanks for taking the time to write this as it is very useful info. I have had mine since July and edges have healed and no problems with it anymore. Slightly bigger though I think mine is about 10mm. But as you say a lot of conflicting info about this condition. I compete a lot in martial arts aswell so don't think I will get a button or a repair until Atleast I retire from sport! As for your case if you have had no bother for 16 years I would be tempted to leave it as it is and maybe just get it measured annually for peace of mind

Your post has made me feel better...I have a medium hole thru my septum. No pain and only noticed it a few weeks ago, have apt wit ent but not for a few months, unfortunately severe anxiety has set in, so am in tears most of the time, thank god I have a marvellous husband

mine started when i had my nose broken along time ago then i got pregnant with my first daughter 21 years ago and my nose was blocked for the hole nine months, then when i had her it unblocked but the problem with my septal was still there. It got worse every time i got pregant so in the end i had my hole in my nose operated on but my nose was still blocked,so i had my sinuses washed out in hospital but it only lasted 6 months and it still blocked now and im now 49 so i dont have a lot of hope that it will go away.

Im setting up an appointment with my dr to find out what can be done about the hole in my nose. Iv had nose problems for 5 yrs and now a hole in the cartlidge dividing my nostrils has developed. Are there certain questions I need to b asking my dr?

see my post and reply below I cover several things to get you started thinking about this...

Don't get a nose button please don't do it you Will regret it the rest of your life

Show all replies in this thread

Every time you do that you are doinf more damage to your septum. The cartilidge (your septum) does not have a blood supply of its own. The blood is supplied to it through the surrounding tissue. Everytime you get a nose bleed from picking 9which is what you are doing) you cause trauma to the mucous membrane 9the skim inside your nose). Repeated nose bleeds and trauma to the mucous membrane will kill more and more cartilidge. You should get it fixed right away and do not pick to clean your nose. Use a salin spray (drug free, just saline) to clean your nose. If you don't fix it the least of your problems will be a hole in your septum. You could lose your septum altogether and end up with one big hole instead of two nostrils. You could also get a saddle nose (when you nose collapses completely)

Less then a month ago i had my septal perforation fixed(i got the hole due to my 2 previous rhinoplasties), i had nose packs in both sides for 3 weeks, it was very uncomfortable, anyways after removing the packs my doctor advised me not to blow my nose for about a week and then do it very gentle, i followed his advise, but yesterday i saw a little hole on the left side again,+ a whistling sound, which i never had before the surgery, and can not breath properly again(at nights my mouth gets so dry, i guess because i don't breathe through the nose). I am going to see my doctor for a check up and i'm terrified, i don't want to hear that the hole reopened again(he said i had 80% chance) but right after surgery he said you are completely closed, and then when he took the packs off, again he said that it's closed. So i was wondering what could go wrong in 10 days time, so i see a hole in there again, i thougth i was healing vey well?

My nasal septum has a hole through it and im worried. I believe the hole was caused by me picking my nose. what harm will this hole do to me (the hole is not so big) please help

I recently discovered I have a 10mm hole in my nasal septum. I didn't know I had it, you can't see it from the outside as it quite high up. I went the an ENT doctor last week. First he suggested a nasal button. I simply refused that. So we discussed it some more and he is going to fix the hole. He is going to take connective tissue from above my ear and put that into the hole and then cover that with mucus membrane from inside my nose. It doesn't actually fix the hole in the cartilage (once there is a hole there the cartilage will never grow back) so it just kind of fills/covers it. He had to get pre-approval from my insurance company. I called this morning to set up the operation, which I will do some time in April. I will have to pay a copay which is think is about $1000.00, but it's well worth it. It hasn't really been too much of a problem, but I don't want it to get worse, so I am getting it fixed before it's too late. My perforation was caused by nose picking, which I don't have a problem admitting and I am not afraid to admit. However had I known that it could cause this kind of damage, I would have quit picking years ago. My youngest daughter picks her nose all the time (or did) now that she nose (lol) that daddy has to go to hospital for an operation she has stopped picking. In the last few weeks no one in the family has seen her pick her nose at all. In fact she had a little friend over, Ella Jane, for a play date about a week ago. Ella jane was picking her nose and Carina (my daughter) said E.J. stop it, you'll get a hole in your nose. E.J.'s response was "Uhm I already have holes in my nose" Carina told her, now in the bone in the middle. E.J. asked my wife who said it was true that could happen and Carina said "My daddy has to have nose surgery because he got one" E.J. promptly stopped picking.

Beware Charles. I have had the surgery twice, once in November the again early March. Only a 9 mm hole and it has failed both times. I went to an ENT first then a highly recommended Plastic Surgeon whom is a perfectionist at this procedure. Currently I am 7 weeks post op and this week a 3 mm hole has shown up. I'm at a loss. I don't think I can stand the surgery again. I should have tried a button to start but both talked me out of it. If you do it good luck.

I have had a hole in my nose now for yrs now and i experience headaches, pains in my sinusis, etc. I was refferred to the ent dept for surgery, i went under the local anesphetic to be then told the hole was to big to have the button fitted.I have been back since and they say they can,t do anything about it. I have constant nose blleds throughout the day, every day. Anybody know the next step?

I have too just discovered a hole in my nose and I'm terrified, I know I have done it from constantly picking scabs from there and making it bleed for about 3 months, I wish i'd just gone the docs now and stopped picking at the scabs but I couldn't help it as they were irritating me and could feel them up there so when the blood dried I'd just pick again and this was at least 4 times a day! I'm very very worried and have got a sort of ache up my nose and into my head now, I went the doctors this morning and she was no help I went in as an emergency so had 2 see 1 of the rubbish 1s who didn't even look at the hole and seemed to dismiss everything I was saying, and now I have to wait 2 weeks to see one of the good ones and I'm going out of my mind!! Does anyone know how to keep it clean as the hole is getting blocked and causing more discomfort I was hoping the doc would of given me something, I've tried vaseline?? I'm so worried about it getting bigger or something happening to my nose, can anyone help!

That's ok I'm just glad I'm not the only 1, I'm really really scared I've got the hospital this afternoon so I will let you know how I get on but reading comments on here doesn't sound like the hospitals have been too helpful or there's much they can do :(

I suffer from severe anxiety so I used to pick my nose so much as a teenager till I turned 21. I picked so much I created a hole in my nose. I couldn't stop picking at it though for a while longer till it got about 2cm (i assume never measured it just an estimate) and I got scared and now I just bite my nails. I just turned 28, but the hole edge seems to be ok, It doesn't crust or cause nose bleeds. I can breathe ok. I just started doing research on it cause I thought I was the only one and was scared for a long time thinking I was alone. Should I bother to get it fixed? I read a lot about a button and etc. It hasn't gotten bigger for several years since the edges got better. I'm getting mixed messages. My husband tells me if my nose falls off he will buy me a new one. Can my nose really fall off? I'm scared!!!!!! I feel as I've been thinking about it again I can feel every movement of my nose.

Melissa, you sound just like me. I just turned 28 and have always wondered if the hole was supposed to be there because I've had it for as long as I can remember. None of my doctors said anything when they examined and I was too embarrassed to ask because I still pick. I can't stop. I use a cpap machine so I have to hydrate always. I use a Q-Tip and neosporin for winter time when the humidity in my house is at its lowest. Or I have this spritz that's a saline gel with aloe. Look in nose care aisle. Medi something. This helps a lot.

If I were you I wouldn't worry about your nose falling off. That would be kinda hard to happen.

Hi, I developed a problem about 3 years ago when I decided to bite open a bag of tilers grout because I didn't have a knife with me (clever I know!). My nose felt burnt and sore and after i kept getting nose bleeds and really crusty scabs or bogeys that I would have to pick aggressively to get out. This hurt like he'll and made my eyes water and usually make my nose bleed. I went to Ear nose and throat where he told me I have quite a large hole in my nose! He was quite arrogant and seemed to be quite certain that I am a cocaine addict, to which I assured him I'm not. When I asked what could be done about it he said to put Vaseline up it and that's all! This was about 3 months ago and since then I think the hole has got bigger and am now really concerned. How effective is surgery or the button that I've read about? Why didn't the doctor mention these avenues to me? I don't really want to go back to him as I am still quite upset by him thinking I'm drug user.

So glad to be reading theses post. I too have a large hole in my septum. First noticed it 6 years ago. Since then it has doubled in size. (I think). I can live with the hole. However, I am worried that if this growing hole continues my nose may collapse. I am constantly bother with crusting around the edges of the hole. How do I stop this?

I'm so embarrassed but last year I had a severe nose bleed which lasted 4.5 hours, ever since I have had really bad scabs, I'm a picker and I tried but they got so big I couldn't leave them. I discovered this week I have now got a hole. I'm actually distraught. I am trying my hardest to leave it alone but as it gets to the end of the day the scab is that big and irritating I try and clear my nose a bit and it comes out whilst blowing my nose. I have been to the doctors and all though she couldn't see it (I explained that was because the scab was in the hole) anyway she has put me forward for an appointment with ENT but explained that there is a long waiting list. I'm worried that until I have appointment the hole will get bigger. If I manage to leave the scab is it possible to heal on its own? Also, is there anything I can do in the mean time, it's very dry and irritating, thanks

If you get an answer to this Id love to know because this has been happening to me and I cant seem to figure out other than surgery how to get the nosebleeds to stop since they come out of nowhere and I walk around with tissues on hand all time and am afraid to stay out long god fobid it starts. and I get anxiety from the nosebleeds. Did you ever get to your ENT and if so, what was the outcome?

i have a large hole in my nose due to constant mephedrone and other powdered drugs. I've only been sniffing for 3 years and i believe my nose is in very bad condition , i have a very nasal voice now, my nose is always streaming and blocked.
