    Problem Piercings

People have been piercing their bodies for thousands of years, but whilst modern day teenagers are more likely to be doing it to make a fashion statement than to intimidate their enemies, the potential health problems are much the same. Read more →

I had my ear piercing done when I was around seven. They were initially fine and I had no problem. One night I banged my ear and it bleed a lot. After that it become infected and after being unable to properly clear the infection I let the piercing close up. However a few years later I had my piercing redone again an infection developed and I had to let it close. Despite various creams and a course of antibacs my old piercing (which I now let close over a decade ago) still has a collection of puss. What can I do about this? xx

basically you need to open the pericing back up with a steralised needle and then get anti-septic wipes and clear round near the piercing, then you need to put anti-septic liquid on the needle and put it back through your ear. this happened to me once and after i done that process it was fine, i hope this could be of help :)xxx

I'm thinking of getting my tongue pierced, but i have been reading some horror stories about infections on the internet and want to know more How common is it for this piercing to get infected? What things should you look out for? And what will they do if it does get infected(Like antibiotics or something)? Also whats the worst thing an infection can do to me (like permanantly affect my speech)? Because one of my friands said that they will have to cut the tongue off and im sure thats not true but just wanted to check. Thankyou.x

hey, i hade my tongue pierced about 4 weeks ago now and im 16. year there are some horror stories but if u do the after care probably, most likly wont happen. as i said i just hade myn doune and it is very easy to look after. you simply wash out your tongue after every time you eat with 50/50 mouthwash and water and it should heaal within 2 weeks.

I've had my tongue pierced a few times now. It isn't too common to get a tongue piercing infection but if you do, you should take it out. It will start to make your breath smell, even if you've just cleaned your teeth. There is no way you would get your tongue cut off and i have never heard of anyone having impaired speech from an infected tongue, maybe when you first have it done (it may take a while to get rid of the lisp). if you do get it done and are worried about it at all, just nip to your GP. Also, make sure your bar is big enough, if the bar is too small (even if it seems perfect) it will start to sort of embed itself into your tongue and it won't look nice. Hope this helped. :) x

I wouldn't. If you make up a salt water solution using hot not boiling water and rock salt. Dissolve them and then bathe the ear with a cotton pad for 5 minutes it should clear it up if not try a small amount of antiseptic. I have tried savlon once as a last resort and it made the pus gunkier and the same colour as the cream.

My doctor has told me to take my snug piercing out as it is infected and the longer it's in there the infection won't go , she said the infection is clinging to the metal bar . I went to my piercer to have it out and he said taking it out was a bad idea as if indeed it was infected it would just trap the infection, so he just put a longer bar in . I am on antibiotics already but I don't know what to do , take it out or leave it

I would probably listen to your doctor and take it out.

I have a keloid scar on my tragus piercing. I have had the piercing for a year now and have constantly cleaned it with various different products such as, salt water, sergical sirit, tea tree oil, saline drops and have also crushed an asprine to form a paste, but it does not seem to want to go. Its bright red and very noticable and crusts over. I want to know is the scar perminent or will it go? or should i just take the piercing out? if so will the lump go?

I have been using Heal Gel, which seems to be making mine smaller, but unfortunately the only place you can find it at the moment is eBay, due to licensing issues.

Hello! I got my bellybutton pierced about 3 years ago and it's never been infected as such, but there's always been a purplish tinge at the top of the piercing. And today some red tissue/flesh appeared coming out of the top of the piercing a little bit. It wasn't red of bleeding or anything, just looked like some red gooey tissue... As if it was my insides coming out of the piercing a little bit. Any suggestions??

I had my tongue pierced about 4 days ago now and I have been cleaning it with both mouthwashes and salt solutions but I don't know whether it has still got infected or not.. I got pierced from the bottom up and the bottom part of the piercing is completely normal but on the top there's like a little hardish lump just infront of the barbell and sometimes a yellow/white pus drains from it, when I pull in apart to see into the piercing there's no goo or anything like that actually inside but just a little bit on the inside front where this little lump is.. It also stings a little bit which is how I know when the pus has drained but I do clean it and I don't know whether its infected or not?! Please tell me if this is normal or not because I've looked everywhere on the internet but it won't tell me!:( is there anything at home I can use to try clear it up before it turns worse? Thankyou

Your tongue is fine, this happened to mine too, keep cleaning it. i went to the doctors and all they said was its normal for the first month or two. If it keeps up though, go to the doctors to be on the safe side.

I think I have a keyloid on my ear, and it's been there ever since I had a piercing in my middle of my orical, I did the piercing myself and it was infected, I left it until it got itchy and a little lump appeared, when I took it out the little lump was still there, it's now been about 3 years and the lump is now quite big, makes me conscious and sometimes very itchy, what shall I do?

Hi I have the same problem and caused by ear piercing. I had mine removed but it did grow back, but not as big. I did have steroid injections in my ear for 8 weeks which were very painful and i feel this is one of the reasons my keloid grew back. As you may be aware any knocks or bumps cause it to grow bigger. It is worth going to your GP so a transfer can be made to a local hospital for the keloid to be removed. On an up side i was free of my keloid for well over a year, which helped me to be myself and regain the confidence i lost. I know this comment wont help you much but i hope it gives you some relief that your not the only one and i hope it gives you the boost you need to see you GP for the options to have the keloid removed.

My piercing story.. i have two sets of ear piercings (done with surgical steel and a gun) which healed perfectly within 3 months. I had my first belly piercing done with bioplast jewlery, within two weeks the area had turned an angry red and my body was rejecting the piercing. I had my second belly piercing done with metal (type unknown) this time done deeper, within two weeks the same thing happened my body was rejecting it and pushing it out. i had my belly pierced a third time with the same unknown metal bar and had my first tongue piercing done on the same day. my tongue was pierced with surgical stainless steel. The belly ring rejected. The tongue piercing swelled terribly within hours of piercing it i had to remove it four days later as it swelled so much i could not talk or eat, my body seemed to reject it. A few months later i got a bad case of tonsilitis and was put on antibiotics, while taking them i had my second tongue piercing done with the exact same bar as the first, it healed perfectly without pain or swelling at all. I got a bladder infection a few months later and was on antibiotics again and got my lower belly piercing (pierced with surgical steel) it healed perfectly without pain or swelling. I recently attempted the top belly piercing again this time with titanium, within a week it began rejecting. I dont know why my body only seems to accept piercings when on antibiotics. Do they suppress my immune system and fool my body into accepting the piercing and heal around it rather than rejecting it as if it was a pathogen? I know i am not allergic to any metals as i can wear anything in healed piercings, they never became infected and i cared for them perfectly, nothing exept antibiotics (for some weird reason) made any difference

Hello, I'm 14 and had my belly pierced about 8 weeks ago. I was stupid to change my piercing after a week - but i got bored of the plain one... Still, no excuse. But now i'm expreiencing a redness, its not gone down since the time of piercing. Its around both holes, but more on the top hole. Also, whenever i take the piercing out, its always got a crusty kinda ring around the top ball, top bit of the bar, and around the top hole. And the same on the bottom, it comes up on the bottom hole and the bottom bit of the piercing. I know they say 6 weeks. But now its been 8 i'm getting worried. If this does get published and anyone does see this - DO NOT REMOVE YOUR PIERCING BEFORE THE PERSON THAT DOES IT SAYS TO DO SO (normally about 6 weeks) Thankyou.

I've had 9 piercings in all. (Not all at once i'll add) I currently have a nipple ring aswell as a Prince Albert piercing. My advice is, if you are worried at all, go back to your piercing artist and they will check everything. Its essential that you clean the piercing, and don't worry if for the first few days it is a bit red and sore. This is completely normal. I can't stress how important it is, not to pierce yourself, or have a friend do it. If you are not convinced that your piercer has given you the correct gauge for your piercing, ask another one to have a look Keep em clean!

To answer most peoples questions, it may be because you touch it too much with unclean or even clean hands. You may have caught the piercing without realising or maybe your body just doesn't agree with the piercing. Your body will try to reject the piercing at first and sometimes it never heals. It could be normal to get a bit of puss every now and then but if it then it may be a good idea to seek professional advice and then remove the jewelerry if needed. Also, always visit your local tattoo parlour for advice on the piercing you want before actually getting it done. Hope this helps everyone.

Hi, I am a body piercer & I would like to offer some advice =] Most piercings can in fact take up to a year to fully heal, but usually the outside of most piercings settles down around the 6 week mark, so dont worry if your piercing looks red after 2 weeks. Clean it twice a day for 2 weeks then cutting it down to once a day for the next 2-3 weeks, you want your body to start taking over its own healing/cleaning process. Do NOT use table salt, use rock or sea salt, or better still a piercing spray, savlon spray can increase swelling. Do not over clean it, you WILL make it sore. Also dont touch/pull/play with your piercing, bacteria on your hands will easily find its way inside your piercing. If your piercing really is infected, then you will definitely know about it, it will be too sore to move & the discharge will smell. If you notice green or black stains from jewellery, then you probably have a nickel sensitivity, switch to using Titanium jewellery & definitely no cheap jewellery in the future. All initial piercings are pierced with longer bars to allow room for swelling, which is completely natural. Don't change the bar for something tiny after a few weeks, wait for at least 6 weeks. If its still a little sore after then, wait some more. Don't listen to what your 'friends' did, they are not the professionals, if your unsure go and ask one, they will be able to help you. I hope this helps some of you =]

i had my ear lobes pierced about mid September last year (so i have had the piercing for about 3 months and 3 weeks), and although i clean it thoroughly with both saline solution and surgical spirit (as i was instructed to do so by the beauty clinic) it keeps getting infected. it isn't a constant infection, however, an infection will occur about once every week on average, and will last from between 4 days and 2 weeks. i take the earrings out and clean them as well as the piercing itself and i was advised to not choose silver as it is common to be allergic to silver studs therefore i chose gold studs. i was wondering if there was anything else that i could do to prevent or even stop future infections. thank you.

i have my tounge, lip, belly button and ears pierced. and they all healed up ok apart from my belly button! i have it done 2 months now but it seems to be infected but only a little bit because its not all red or sore. it just seems to be weeping puss stuff like every time i move the belly bar the slightest bit. i'm a bit worried about it because i've been using the savalon spray that the peircer told me to use but it just seems not to work!! =[ is there any way of telling me why my belly button piercing seemed to get infected and none of my other peircings? because i've always cleaned it and it just seems not to work!!!

ive had kinda the same problem, when i got my belly done it was just doin what a normal peircing should do, but then it started to weep puss and some times bleed a little, i started using hot water salt and tea tree oil,i cleaned this 3 times a day and it cleared up well, if your peircings become white or crusty reduce the amount of salt mixed in with the water x

I have my daith pierced (upper ear) and have a small bump around it too which is shrinking and almost gone. It got slightly infected just after piercing due to irritation and that's what the bump is in my case. If it hurts, oozes or produces a yellowish crust that's probably what it is. If not it may be scarring and your GP or piercer should have solutions to minimise it. For infection sea salt soaks once or twice daily (adding drops of tea tree oil to the sea salt solution helped mine too) will improve it, it may take a few weeks to heal fully. Avoid touching or playing with the piercing as the irritation will make it worse! If ever worried every good piercer will take a look and will know exactly what to do!
