Hi, I would be grateful for some advise as to what could be wrong with me, thank you. For quite a while I have been experiencing urine leaking from my vagina. I am unable to control this leakage. Also when I use a tampon it is filling up with urine. I am inserting the tampon correctly. This leakage also occurs on insertion of a tampon. I am really worried as to what could be wrong with me. I am 23yrs old and have a child who is now 2yrs old. I would appreciate any guidance. Many thanks x

I am a married women age 64. Five years ago I was constipated for a while. I have since changed my diet to become a vegetarian and my bowl movement became as frequent as 3 times a day. My number 2's became 'soft' but due to being constipated in the past I have noticed that the anal rim had 'stretched' and there is an inch of 'skin' (anal lining) hanging out of my bottom (not piles). I spend a lot of time wiping myself with toilet paper and baby wipes and apart from leakage, I am also experiencing a lot of itching around the area. Even tough I was embarrassed I went to see my GP twice, but he refused to refer me due to NHS lack of funds. My GP also suggested I stick toilet paper up to catch the leakage. The itching is driving me crazy, the leakage is compromising my hygiene and also being spontaneous with my husband in the bedroom department as I am conscience of being dirty and likely to smell. This is affecting my quality of life but what else can I do?

Exercise is potentially the key to strengthen the pelvic muscles, walking, yoga, cycling, swimming. Seems like you may need to be taking a good probiotic. An extremly good one is Biokult. Good luck.

For over 10 years I have suffered with leakage and smelly odours down below. I wear pads daily to try and mask it and if I don't wear them the smell and leakage goes through my underwear and trousers and I end up having to change every few hours as I stink. I can't cope with this anymore. I am now 25 and it affects me sexually and emotionally. I have tried treatments for thrush etc but nothing gets rid of it. And if it does it's literally for a couple of days and it comes back with vengence!! Is there anything that can help me?? I'm too embarrassed to go back to the docs AGAIN with the same problem time and time again. Thanks x x

This may be BV which is bacterial vaginosis. I have this and it's the result of a ph imbalance. It has all the symptoms you describes and is in varying severity. There is a course of antibiotics but I have not found them successful and some people find it makes it worse. I suggest google and see what they say about home remedies but don't do them until you have spoken to a doctor. They say the causes can be terminations, miscarriages or a lot of unprotected sex. I completely sympathise with you and it does make getting close to someone. Do go to the doctors though, you shouldn't be embarrassed it is not something you asked for and they have seen EVERYTHING! Good luck.

I'm a 32 year-old female. 3 1/2 months ago I had an anal fissure. This was followed by a hemorrhoid and now for the past month I've been experiencing what one may describe as anal leakage. I wash myself immediately after a bowel movement but approximately half an hour later I will experience a burning/itching sensation and after wiping there will be a small amount of yellowish/brownish matter on the tissue. My GP said I have a spastic colon whilst the specialist who I have been referred to so far said I've got no fissures. Up until 3 1/2 months ago I used to clean myself externally and internally using wet wipes. Since I have been unable to use them as I have been unable to insert my finger up there like I used to. The leakage accompanied by the burning/itching are beginning to impact on all aspects of my life and nowadays I'll end up crying every time this happens. Any suggestions as to what may be causing this and way of managing it would be highly appreciated.

Hi. There are a number of pelvic floor toners which can help deal with classic incontinence symptoms, such as those you describe. Many things can cause this problem, including childbirth, menopause and the aging process. Like many muscles, the pelvic floor needs exercise! Two very popular electronic toners are the Athena Pelvic Muscle Trainer and the Kegel8 range, or you can try a (cheaper) manual toner such as Kegelmaster or some simple pelvic floor weights, such as Kegel Balls. There are a full range on the site http://pelvic-floor-toners.info

I am 37 years of age and a mother of 2.Since my last child 5years ago, I have leakage espically when i cough, sneeze and when I jump about with my children. I have to wear protection all the time. I am always exercising my pelvic floor muscles. Please help.

could you be/have been pregnant Holly?

If you are not pregnant and both breasts are leaking you could have a hormone problem. I had that at 20 and found out I had an underactive thyroid. Dont be afraid - go and see your doctor as leaking breast is not normal. Nearly all my hair fell out before I went to the doctor so dont ignore it!

i have a problem with a small leakage of urine after i have been to the toilet. after i have wiped myself and stand up to pull my clothes back up, i often get a leakage. is this to do with my pelvic floor?

I do understand the anxiety caused by this condition. I too suffer from leakage and I just can't figure it out. My MD has no idea. I also had my gallbladder removed approximately 3 years ago. My leakage comes and goes and I'm beginning to wonder if it is a food issue as others have talked about. I try to monitor what I'm eating and the only thing I can think of that I've eaten that might be causing the problem is chocolate. My favorite, but I don't eat it often. During the holidays I have eaten alot of it and I have my leakage back. Will give it up and monitor. I am also taking probiotics and digestive enzmes hoping this helps. It is amazing and frustrating in that this seems to be more of a common problem than not and yet the medical profession can't seem to figure it out. Thank you for your posts, it helps to know I'm not alone.

I cured my anal leakage problem. by keeping my butt cooler. I found that by wearing heavy clothes from the waist down that trap heat in was causing anal poop meltdown. I came across this cure when a doctor on TV said that people should sleep in the nude for better health. I tried it and I noticed my anal leakage problem stopped completely. I also stopped using my electric blanket and avoid sitting in hot bath water and hot tubs that cause my poop meltdown. I stopped my leakage problem 100% by keeping my butt as cool as possible. I stopped wearing under shorts to keep cooler. I hope this can help others who have this embarrising problem. (Age 68) Cold Michigan.

Re the lady with the bottom problem on the programme on April 22nd: I have had the same symptoms for several years, gradually getting worse [anal leakage and bleeding]. The GP ruled out bowel cancer, but did not pick up the cause of the problem. After much searching the internet, I eventually discovered that the rectum is an inefficient storage organ, and if defecation is delayed or incomplete, leakage could occur. So after 3 months of pelvic floor exercises [must be done correctly] and a daily helping of All Bran I have experienced a 99% improvement.

For about 8 years now I have been suffering from anal leakage. After a trip to the toilet and a thorough cleaning, after 15mins - 1hr I end up feeling very uncomfortable and moist around my anus. A revisit to the toilet and I'm wiping again as it appears as if I didn't wipe properly the 1st time. I sometimes need to revist several times afterwards as more leakage occurs. Having a shower straight afterwards really helps, but this is not possible at work. The Dr first diagnosed a fistula, but after going in for an op, they didn't find one. Latest diagnosis is a weak sphincter muscle and to try various exercises to try and tone the muscle up. So far there is little improvement and I have read that it is possible to have a small operationto tighten up the muscle - is this recommended?

I do agree having a bath shower does help but when you are at work you are not able to do this. I am extremly paranoid about this condition and am only 38years old i have mentioned it to the nurse once when i visited the doctors, but i feel very embarresed about it and never followed it up.

Ever since I had my gall bladder removed 15 years ago I've had a problem with soft stools and anal leakage. Additionally the frequency of bowel movements has increased to the point where 4 or more in 24 hours is not unusual. To that end to insure removal of any residual fecal matter wiping has become a much more intensive activity. I even finish with a shallow insertion of paper into the anus after wiping several times. In spite of my efforts to achieve maximum cleanliness, however, I still have issues with minor staining on my briefs. I've tried using wet wipes in the wiping process without seeing any remediation of the subsequent leakage problem. I've tried modifying my diet without any noticeable improvement. The only solution I've found is wearing those aggravating panty liners. Any thoughts on other methods of resolving these issues?

See your GP. If you have any leakage, or you can feel something protruding when you cough as well as the pain, it may be a prolapse.

I am a 75 yr old woman and have Coeliac disease which I diagnosed myself approx. 6 yrs ago. I've had a lot of surgery since I was 41 - first a hysterectomy/bladder/bowel repair and 5 months later a further bowel repair. Then in my 50's a prolapsed rectum which I didn't go to GP about until my late 50's. I had two non-intrusive ops. for the rectum prolapse, useless outcome. Then at 63 (still Coeliac not diagnosed) I had approx. 15" of intestines removed & a very intrusive op. for the rectum & I think the rectum problem was fixed somewhat by use of a "sling" inside. As I had malabsorption for yrs previously & continually the toilet, I thought when I diagnosed the Coeliac condition I would be fine. However, not as bad since on gluten free diet but a lot of escaping wind & faeces leakage. GP has seen this weeks ago & I have asked for Consultant referral. Do I need a further surgical op. to rectify. I'm just so weary of the embarrassmet of leakage and escaping wind.

I have had 2 fistulas since May 2007. It all started with an abscess which was removed. The fistula openings are between my buttocks very close to my anus. I had 8 operations on them between May and December 2007. Draining, putting in setons, one of which was so tight I could hardly walk. They leaked alot, making me very sore and I spent many hours in a salt bath to ease the soreness. I was then transferred to another specialist who has been fantastic. He has explained that one of the fistulas is above my sphincter muscle and the other goes through it. The one that went through the sphincter muscle was laid open and all was well until I had an infection - then it returned. I now have the 2 fistulas back, both with setons. On a day to day basis I really do not have many problems, leakage is minimal and pain is more or less non existant. However having said that I have had 2 infections so far this year which are not pleasant. I have agreed to be a 'guinea pig' for a trial procedure and have everything crossed that it works for me. For those of you who suffer from soreness from the leaking try to get some Cavilon spray - it really helps me on the odd occasions I have a lot of leakage.

I was told i had crohns in about 2006, since then i have had over 15 surgeries. Fistulas still occur, leakage change i find the 4x4 bandages folded a few times and place between ur cheeks works wonders! A lil weard to get use to but a whole lot neater and comfortable. Had to switch from boxers back to briefs but other than that it works great.
