I'm 18, I started my periods when I was 11, I always suffered extreme cramps and mood swings during my periods, often the cramps caused many sleepless nights and left me unable to move. I started taking the contraceptive pill about 2 years ago, this really helped with my periods, made the flow lighter, lessened the severity of my cramps and eased the mood swings, however, I decided to stop taking it about 6 months ago and haven't had a regular period until this month, the rest have been irregular and have only amounted to a small brown discharge. This first normal period is the heaviest I have ever had and the cramps and mood swings are back with a vengeance, much worse than I ever had before. Is this normal after taking the contraceptive pill for so long?

I went to my doctor about my mood swings as they went up and down quickly and my mood could change in a split second by next to nothing. Bipolar is in my family so i was tested for that and it came back negative. I was then refured to an ADHD doctor after talking to a special type of nurse (similar to a Councillor). After a questionnaire that me, my mum and my head of year at school filled in I was diagnosed with ADHD. It was about 6 months ago now and have found medication really helpful. However, when I forget to take my medication my ADHD seems to be worse. I lash out on people a lot quicker and also loose my temper a lot quicker and easier as well. Late afternoon I have fast down fall of emotions have have been put on a sort of antidepressants. I have now accepted the fact that I have ADHD and I have found it easier to help control my tempers and mood swings. Is there anything else I can do to help it when I forget to take my medication?

make a food list for what your gonna have that day and have 1 snack in it,exercise about 3 times a week, and then have a lazy day on sunday. and on your weigh in day,if u lose something u shud treat ur self to a bar or something but if u dont u cant have it,and just look in the mirror and imagine urself real skinny,an idea is buy urself and expensive pair of size 12 jeans or something and say to urself ill fit into them. hope i helped, Chelsea XxXx

Yes they can. Energy drinks are great and will give a sudden burst once this sugar rush is over you body then diverts to slumbness making you feel tired meaning your body doesn't have any engery at all. This then becomes a vicious circle so you grab an energy drink to give the boost.. Myself drinks around anything from 50-60 cans of energy drinks a week and have done for many years.. Doing this I have headaches.. Not much intake of food.. Can feel my heart race at times and now suffering with stomach pains.. Been to my docs they say if I think its to much then slow down drinking but as I said its a circle.. I'd love to stop drinking them but can't..

I have not been in this situation myself but it sounds like you need to take your daughter to your local GP and see what they say. Mood swings happen quite often for girls that have only had there periods for 1-2 years, usually its just emotions going up and down, but if it starts to get worse then you definitely need to take your daughter to your local GP and see what they say.

After coming off the depo injection (I only had 2injecyions) so I was only on the injection 6months, I have been having my period or over 7 months it has been really heavy, if I get a break from it it's only a day here and there, it's making me ill, I'm under 71/2st I'm constantly tired, have really bad night sweats and hot flushes, I will be sweating even when I'm cold, bad mood swings. My partner and I are trying for another baby and have obviously been unsuccessful thus far.

Hi I have been on the implant for almost a year now. After a few months of no period I now have periods that last 3 weeks every month! They are not painful but my mood always changes when I'm bleeding. I'm a lot more irritable and have bad mood swings. Also I have a really bad smell which makes me feel quite sick and doesn't go away no matter how much I wash! I would like to know if this is normal and what I can do to stop the smell and mood swings.

I'm almost 17 and I suffer from bad sleeps. I rarely sleep the full night, it takes me forever to sleep but nothing helps push me to sleep. I have dark bags under my eyes, which sucks as I'm the only person I know with them. But I think the lack of sleep affects me more than I like to think. I suffer from extremely bad mood swings, I can go from one extreme mood to another. This causes me to lose control of myself and often can cause me to be deluded about my abilities. Also I think its partially the cause of my memory problems, there's large gaps of my day which I cant recall at all. The reason I think this is embarrassing is because my fatigue gets in the way of me doing activities because I'm just too tired. The bags age me in ways I don't want to be aged, and the mood swings (which I'm sure is related) can get in the way of my social life. I've tried loads of things and nothing has helped! I had these bad sleeping problems for so long that I can't even remember when it started.

you may have bi polar disorder, im not a profesional but talk to your doctor and or a phyciatrist about it

Thank you Eleanor for your brilliant post, I have bipolar disorder and my pmt is unbearable. I am 42 and my pmt mood swings are so bad that I too have tried to commit suicide twice just before my period and been put in a psychiatric hospital but then discharged when my period starts because I'm fine as soon as it starts. I get crippling migraines, angry, evil mood swings, insomnia, depression, you name it for at least two weeks of my cycle. It is so dangerous because of what I might do to myself when the mood is bad, to me it's more of a problem than being bipolar. I wish more people including doctors and psychiatrists would take it seriously because it makes life impossible, work, relationships, everything. I've tried all the treatments, various contraceptive pills, metformin, nutritional therapy, diet, exercise. It's easy to do the lifestyle things when you're in the first phase of your cycle but when that terrible pmt kicks in the cravings start and you can forget healthy eating! Anyone who has experienced this knows I am not making excuses. Its like I'm someone different. I am desperate with pmt right now and the comments here have really helped, thank you. I will talk to my GP about having my ovaries removed. This has given me some hope that maybe I can reclaim my life from this hell. Good luck everyone.

im 18 and about a year ago i was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome disorder.I was in a big amount of pain and got rushed to hospital . they thought it was my apendix at 1st but then i had a ultrasound n they realised i had lots of cysts on my ovaries.(the pain i had suffered was a large cyst bursting_)Also had some blood tests wich confirmed i didnt just have polycystic ovaries but polycystic ovary syndrome disorder.i get bad skin and suffer with really bad mood swings from this 2. i agree theres not alot of sympathy for us guys with this!and yeah i worry too about not having children. i dont have many peroids!usually one every four months.my mood swings get so bad!and i really dont mean 2 do some things some times it just isnt me.No one really understands i dont think! take care people x

I wanted to know if people would think it was possible I have this. Every time I come on my period I become completely irrational, and no-one can tell me otherwise. I become angry and can flip at the slightest thing, wanting to throw things at walls, self harm or be very hurtful and verbally abusive to my partner. I also become extremley tearful and will cry often and feel like I cant do anything. Although usually work driven I feel like I cant do anything and when I sit down to do work I usually end up staring at the screen not knowing what to do and then getting angry at myself for wasting so much time. I also become exteamly stressed and paranoid. I am an 18 year old who got the implant a year ago, it affected me badly (6 month long period, mood swings, etc) however after being on a contraceptive pill I feel I have returned to normal - it is only when I come onto my period that the mood swings start up again. I feel like I cant go on functioning like this - if anyone has any advice or suggestions that would be great.

It sounds very likely that you have it. Try keeping a mood diary, then go to your gp and ask if they think the diagnosis fits.

I am nearly 19 years old and I have been living with my boyfriend for nearly a year. I have felt over the past 6 months or so, I have been struggling to control my erratic mood swings. Just one thing that is said or done can affect my mood dramatically. The scary thing is I didn't really think of it as going from one 'extreme' mood to the other, I didn't really think anything of it, until my boyfriend talked to me about it. It's like one minute I can be calm and content and then my boyfriend can say one thing and I can get really down/teary or annoyed/irritable. I am also tired all the time, I feel weary and lathargic a lot even though I get plenty of sleep. I thought it was just hormones changing throughout the month but now it seems to be a reoccuring issue and I just want to know if this is normal or if there is an underlying condition which is affecting me. I don't know if it's slightly bi-polar (I do feel like I experience highs as well as lows), SAD syndrome or PDD.

yes i am very much like this but no need to worry

Im not sure whether or not i have OCD as i do act weirdly sometimes like if something is to close to the edge of a table i get really stressed out and when im walking next to someone i always have to walk on the right side other wise i feel dizzy and also if i put something somewhere and somebody else moves it even just an inch i get quite annoyed. I also go through random mood swings. Is this something that i should be worried about?
