Hi - I had this problem so i went for a colonic irrigation. The hydrotherapist said the mucus is formed by my body as an intolenace to wheat, and by eating too much sugar. He gave me a course of pro-boitics (available from Boots / heath shop) and it has totally disappeared.

i'v been constipated for a few years now on and off, this morning i went to the toilet and opened my bowels, when wiping myself i kept noticing this mucus sticky stuff, i stood up to check bowl and the mucus stuff was all around my poo. its really sticky and quiet a large amount of it. should i be concerned? help?

Hi, I'm a 20 yearl old male and for about 2 years now (it might even be longer I can't recall not having this problem actually) I've been suffering with a sore, itchy anus. There has been a 'discharge' as well, sometimes it is a clear like liquid that won't stop, on bad days it has soaked through to my jeans. Other times it is a very pale yellow-green greasy mucus like build-up. It smells bad and has been very embarrasing for me, it also itches more when the mucus is there and sometimes that is unbearable. There is blood coming from my anus too but only after I pass a stool (I have checked my stool and it contains no blood). I'm too embarrased to go to my doctor could somebody please help me. Thank you.

These problms are more common than people think. No body talks about them though so people suffer in silence. Your doctor will be able to help.People go to doctor with These sorts of problems every week.

I would go to the doctor asap, you would be surprised what they see everyday. You are just a human body to them nothing to be embarrassed about. or go straight to A&E when its bad and be seen by someone there.Must get it checked out though.

My daughter is 3years old... has had chronic bowel problems since birth. (She had a Colidocal Cyst removed from her liver at 5 months which had 3/4 pint of fluid in!) She is so bright and intelligent but has really struggled with toilet training. She has always coughed up this thick gloopy, white mucus and was put on antibiotics from being approx 12 months. Sweat test came back negative. Consultant stopped antibiotics in Jan, thick mucus started again... tested it for cultures came back clear now they want to test for CF again. Help and advice please!!

Sorry to hear about your Daughter, it must be such a worry for you. Suffering with C.F. myself, you usually get horrible yellow to green coloured sticky phelgm, it's rarely white, well, from my experience anyway! I've always thought that white mucus is good, & not infected, but I'll leave the diagnosis up to the medical professionals! Let's hope the tests come back negative for C.F. & you find out what is wrong with your Daughter, so that she can be offered treatment, if required, very soon .. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, your Daughter & your Family ... :+)

Hi, im seventeen. I am still a virgin. And currently, i have a green mucus color discharge when i wipe. And on my underwear, its smeared with some blood. I used to have what looked like a yeast infection 2 months ago. Cottage cheese and elastic clear discharge. I used yeast medication. 2 months after that yeast infection, i thought i had yeast again because the discharge was clear and elastic, and it was itchy I used yeast medication again. I also tried really hard to keep it dry down there. Now i have light green mucus discharge and blood on my undies after this infection/medication use. I haven't had my period yet either. I usually get it at the end if the month. Its been irregular a lot. What can i do to stop it? And what could it be? I am really worried.

How do you "keep it clean" and remove the crusting and resulting mucus buildup? I have been using earbuds and picking where necessary to clear and did not realise this could make it worse? I have just been to an ENT in London and she was wholly unhelpful in giving any advice beyond telling me surgery is not an option and did not offer any insight in the best way to manage this on a day to day basis. I struggle to breathe through my nose and as a result get very tired quickly during any kind of excercise - I am 28 and have to sit down to recover after climbing a set of stairs! The amoutn of times a day I need to clean my nose of mucus and crusting just to be able to halfway breath is crazy and I'm really struggling on a day to day basis to deal with this problem. Has anyone tried the buttons? Do they help? Thanks very much for any feedback! I'm at my wits end...

Hi Cass I had a button fitted a month ago. I'm not sure how much difference it is actually making. My breathing feels a lot more natural which is good. One nostril feels fine, I wouldn't know it was there. the other one feels constantly tickly, as if there is something stuck up my nose - which there is - a septal button. I never experienced the breathing difficulties you described, either pre or post button. I was getting quite a bit of mucus/post-nasal drip and that is still the case. It tends to get worse as the day goes on. The thing that I find gives me most relief is eating ice-lollies. My perforation was caused by an external trauma. It doesn't appear to have got any bigger over time according to the ENT. He suggested trying the button before considering surgery. I was told that the button would not preclude future surgery but also that the surgery is not guaranteed and can make things worse. I've certainly not felt worse as a result of the button but maybe not quite as much of an improvement as I would have liked.

Should also have added that ENT recommended breathing steam - which I have found helpful. Picking is not a good idea.

I noticed a septum hole into my teen years, fairly large about the size of the tip of my pinky finger, I can actually reach up my nostrils and touch my fingers together! I figured out it was from when I broke my nose as a child and the resulting trauma created horrible scabbing in my nose that I constantly picked until I wore a hole through it! The good news is the hole is now healed and not getting bigger although it is often a source of annoyance for me. It gets very dry especially in the winter months so I do my best to keep it moisturized. It whistles very loudly too and is a source of amusement for my family and friends. The worst part is that it traps crusty mucus buildup which often cannot be removed simply by blowing which results in more picking unfortunately. The best thing that has worked for me it to keep it clean and moisturized and I take hot showers and make sure it is flushed out and clear of buildup to reduce my need to pick at it. Like I said it is now stable and not growing larger and it is not such a problem that i do not feel the need to see a doctor it is just something that I have to manage sensibly. I hope these tips are helpful to people who are worried about it, it will always be a source of annoyance and minor problems but with proper care it can become very manageable so that it is not a constant bother!

Hi Rachel How long has it taken to get to this stage , that is from when you first noticed it in your teen years until now?

In response to your question, after I broke my nose when I was a child it was pretty messed up for a few years with nosebleeds occurring a lot and I couldn't prevent myself from picking at the scabs. So I must have gradually picked my way through the septum and it was when I was a teen that I really noticed it had become a significant hole because by that time I had stopped my picking for several years and it was basically healed. I cannot give you an exact estimate of how long it took to heal because I do not exactly remember how long it took once I stopped picking at it until it was fully healed but I can tell you that I have been living with it fully healed ever since then and I am now almost 25. As with all things healing takes time and care. Do whatever you can to stop yourself from picking at it! As a child I couldn't stop myself and I obviously didn't know the damage I was doing but as we grow up we tend to lose habits such as that. I believe I stopped picking at it constantly while I was still in elementary school and then i didn't think about it again until I noticed the hole once I was older and by that time it was all healed. So it will take time but you can speed up the healing process by keeping your hands off and treating it like any other injury. Using healing ointments could be helpful for softening scabs so they aren't so bothersome while you are getting through the healing process. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice on what products are safe and effective and once it is fully healed it is much easier to manage. I hope this has been helpful!

It started with a yellow poo once, then re occuring blood and mucus.this is 10 days later after visit. Sometimes I pass just the mucus. I have absolutely no other symptoms, no cramps nothing. The poo has gone back to normal brown but still loads of mucus this is happening around 5 times a day, where as before I went every 2/3 days, normal healthy poo. I have extremely healthy diet and I'm normal weight for 40yr old female. I have researched every possible cause only thing similar is dysentry.

Some people like myself suffer bad breath as a result of a condition which affects the back of the nose(the point where your throat closes in order to swallow). A build up of mucus runs from the back of the nose and down the throat varying in consistency, and it's usually fairly constant. The mucus can vary from being thin like watert, to a thick, difficult to swallow mucus. A glad in the head over produces this mucus as a protection. Different things can trigger it. For some it may be during summer when they suffer more due to pollen. Unfortunately, I think I'm allergic to damp old Britain so I have it year round, unless I go on holiday abroad to a drier climate. The condition is called Catarrh, or Post Nasal Drip. There are a variety of ways to treat it from saline nasal douching to laser surgery. My fear with surgery is that unless the gland that produces the mucus is removed, it will carry on producing the mucus, and any effect surgery may have will only be temporary, however I've not researched surgery so my fears could be completely unfounded. I'm looking to buy an electric, nasal and sinus cleanser which uses a saline solution called a Sinupulse. I've read up about it and it looks promising. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd really like to hear.

That electric treatment sounds good. I'm 18 and have been suffering with this for as long as I can remember. I wake up daily to a mouth covered in mucus and m constantly throwing up mucus in the toilet probably twice a day which is really not the way I want to be living my life. I have been to my GP countless times with them telling me to use every spray under the sun with no luck. I even had my adenoids removed and this, if anything I think made matters worse. I hope to go to university and definitely cannot cope with this any longer. I know it's not life threatening but it really affects my quality of life. I've looked into acupuncture but am a little worried as I've read that one could be placed in the wrong position and could cause death but maybe I'm just being too paranoid. I find that taking a daily anti histamine allergy reliefs tablet helps especially during pollen season as I suffer from it all year round If anyone can help me I would be so grateful

My number 2 changes constantly yellow, brown, soft, hard mucus,no mucus?? I have had various tests but the doctor said I was too young for a coloscopy aged 26??? After feeling my stomach he signed me off and I've never heard anything since!,, iv suffered with on and off cramping and bloating for years but feel well most of the time is this ok?

I get mucus quite a lot. I suffer with a mixture of c and d, and sometimes if i'm constipated, i'll have the feeling of going to the loo and i'll only pass mucus. Sometimes its like white colour other times its brown, it also happens when i pass tiny stools when i'm constipated. Is it normal to have it?

I noticed a lot of mucus in my stools and I have a lot of wimd and my stools are mostly very soft, long and thin. My doctor referred me to hospital and I had a colonoscopy which did not show any problem. The situation continues, I get a sudden urge and have to rush to loo. I wear pads all the time as I can pass mucus at any time . I cannot control it.

Hi I have some unpleasant bowel stuff going on, for about 10 years I have had a problem with a mucus discharge from my anus, it is very itchy and sometimes acidic. It often is tainted with faeces. More recently my stool has become very dark and has the consistency of modelling clay (it smears down the back of the loo- but there is no blood apparent), I feel bloated much of the time, and the need to go to the toilet has gone from once a day (normally), to two to three times a day (but with an urgency element about it). Does anyone have any ideas what this may be? and how I can stop it, or at least relieve the mucus?

Dont stress this is completely normal, it sounds like you are starting to ovulate. The body naturally produces cervical mucus (this makes it more slippery and so easier when do start having sex). The cervical mucus is clear and can be sticky, some people say its like egg white. Sounds yucky but its just what you body does!
