Hello all appreciate hearing your posts! I have recently developed a nasal perforation due to the use of fluctocasone (a nasal decongestant). I saw a ent doctor and had surgery to close it. For the procedure a mucosa flap was cut, rotated, and stitched into place. The procedure unfortunately did not work. I am seeking a second opinion and having the size of the hole monitored. Currently it is between 5-6mm. My question and concern here is does the hole get bigger over time? Thanks!

i have a perforation of my nose and have been to see an ENT specialist who told me there are three options to help, first being nasal dooshing, second a button to fit the hole or third the operation to fill the hole. i would like to know what is the best option to take/consider.

My sons nasal septum was damaged by a cpap machine being fitted tightly when he was in the neonatal unit. As a consequence he does not have a nasal septum and I was wondering if I could obtain advice on what procedures are available to rebuild his nasal septum or who I can speak too to obtain advice. He has visited a NHS plastic surgeon but I wanted to see if I could get some independent advice. Thanks.

Does he have problems related to it? What is your concern? What problem does he display?

Hi Judith, My son doesn't have a problem related to it. His nose tip is not supported so kind of hangs down. I would say his problem is more cosmetic. We were given two options to rebuild his nasal septum. The first was to remove some skin from his stomach side and apply it to his nose and hope this skin naturally attaches itself to his nose. The alternative sounds a bit horrifying whereby they will take skin from behind his ear over his head and attach it to his nose. This last option has a better success rate. What I wanted to know was which option would give a better natural finish. I don't want to put my son through any unnecessary pain but he wants it done as his pears at school are now starting to ask him about his nose which is starting to annoy him a lot, as well as bullying as a result of him being different. And if he does want to go through with it I would rather he did a procedure that gave the better as natural as possible finish. So could do with advice of different options available be it NHS or private. He would then need a second operation to ensure both nasal holes are similar in size. Thanks, Sukhi.

His nasal septum surgery appointmentioned has been fixed for first week in Feb 2016. His plastic surgeon has recommended the first option as he believes it would be easier for my son than the second option. I would like further independent advice on this. If you email me, I can email you by return a mobile number to contact me on as I would be happy for you to contact me on either my email address or mobile number. Thanks, Sukhi.

What can i do to regain my sence of smell i've been suffering from this problem for the past three years, been to local GP and was prescribed with Flixonase Nasule Nasal drops and Nasonex Nasal spray unfortunately it's doing no good,Kind regaurds,

I have a tiny, about 1-2 mm in diameter nasal septal perforation. Since it's that smaal I make a whistling sound with my nose that wakes me up at night or won't let me fall a sleep. My ENT doc said, that there isn't a septal button that small. I have lupus which causes a lot of scar tissue after a cut or operation and that makes me really-really-REALLY sceptic about surgery. Is there any other way to treat that little annoying hole in my nose?

This past January I had a septal button put into my nose, because I had a very large hole in my nasal septum from a previous surgery I had when I was little. Just recently, the right side of my nose has been sore and swollen and making the right side of my mouth to hurt. It hurts to blow my nose, eat or even smile. What should I do and why is my nose hurting this much since my surgery?

I have suffered what can only be described as a nasal drip for the last 3 years or so. I constantly have to clear my throat or else it starts to effect my voice. Then I have to cough up this horrible green gunk. I have tried so many nasal sprays over the years but nothing works. the doctor just keeps giving me different sprays to try. It is so annoying, not just to me but to everyone around me. Btw I suffer from Asthma, Underactive Thyroid and Barretts disease too. Help

for a hole of 5-6 mm you may be able to have a septal button fitted... Whether or not the hole gets bigger can depend on a number of factors, whether or not you clean out your nose and whether or not there are any other reasons for the hole - fungal, bacterial etc... The worst thing you could do is pick your nose or clean out aggressively with tissue / wet wipe, this will likely enlarge the hole... with a hole of your size a button could likely be successfully fitted and would hopefully help stop any further bleeding or crusting issues you may have...

Thanks for the response! I am hoping it does not getting any worse.

I've worn a nose stud for 20+ yrs. The post has stabbed my septum more times than I remember. I guess it was 1 time too many, and pierced my septum. Was small at first and whistled. I had a nasal rinse and naseptim. I got regular nosebleeds. It led to a cycle of pick the scab, it bleeds, pick the scab again, but also remove a tiny bit more dead tissue. Bleeds again, pick scab etc. So the hole is now probably about the size of fingertip. Nasal rinse is useless, doesn't get to the back, comes straight out the other side. And how do you put cream on a hole? Surgery is out as i also have a connective tissue disorder, which complicates healing etc. Where will the hole stop? Will my nose collapse at some point? I'm only 38, and don't want to spend rest of my life looking like Daniella Westbrook did!

ive just found a hole in my septum and completly freaked out - i cant actually believe there is a hole there - - i had used nasal sprays for about 9 years now and i think the steroid sprays and the steroids tablets have caused this to happen - im going to see ent specialist next week and im scared what he will suggest - do majority of holes have to be sorted or can you lived with them?

I had the same thing happen to me. Years of allergy issues and steroid nasal sprays, along with Astelin, casued a septum perforation that I found 6 months ago. The ENT I went to said it won't heal, but usually does not require treatment. However, mine is getting bigger and I'm worried it will cause my nose to collapse.

I first got a hole in my septum following an illness called purpura when I was 14, I am now 59 and have lived with it without any problems. I sometimes use it as a party trick by passing a coat hanger top through it.(not recommended)

Seriously, if the polyps are visible without any thing like an endoscope then you'll notice a difference in your entire life if you get them removed. I just did and I'm 18 and my life has gone from being sick all the time to being more healthy than I can ever remember.

Hi, i recently went to my gp with terrible migraines which has been ongoing for nearly a month, i told him that i had notice a hole in my nose when he looked he said "oh my god" his words not mine he said that i needed to see a E N T specialist he thinks it may be caused from using (over the counter) nasal decongestants and steroid nasal sprays which were given by the doctor to prevent sinus infections i have had quite a few over the last 3 years and i may need an operation to correct this which will be a nightmare for because i cant handle the idea of that also i think the migraines may be being caused from my sinus problems.

From all accounts reading thru many pages of this thread...the op is not very successful, or indeed necessary. Unless it is causing immense problems. I have a large septum hole, but my sinuses and blocked nose have actually improved since the hole as there is nothing to trap mucous. Keeping it clean with sinus rinses is important and keeping moist

Hiya Sarah, I had the migraines and I got the hole due to past operation and Last Monday I had the Nasal Septum Button Operation and I know it`s only been 1 week and I`m feeling a lot better, I`ve had a slight sore head and I`ve been in slight pain but thats it, I don`t snore now and it`s been the best decision to get it done

I recently discovered I have a 10mm hole in my nasal septum. I didn't know I had it, you can't see it from the outside as it quite high up. I went the an ENT doctor last week. First he suggested a nasal button. I simply refused that. So we discussed it some more and he is going to fix the hole. He is going to take connective tissue from above my ear and put that into the hole and then cover that with mucus membrane from inside my nose. It doesn't actually fix the hole in the cartilage (once there is a hole there the cartilage will never grow back) so it just kind of fills/covers it. He had to get pre-approval from my insurance company. I called this morning to set up the operation, which I will do some time in April. I will have to pay a copay which is think is about $1000.00, but it's well worth it. It hasn't really been too much of a problem, but I don't want it to get worse, so I am getting it fixed before it's too late. My perforation was caused by nose picking, which I don't have a problem admitting and I am not afraid to admit. However had I known that it could cause this kind of damage, I would have quit picking years ago. My youngest daughter picks her nose all the time (or did) now that she nose (lol) that daddy has to go to hospital for an operation she has stopped picking. In the last few weeks no one in the family has seen her pick her nose at all. In fact she had a little friend over, Ella Jane, for a play date about a week ago. Ella jane was picking her nose and Carina (my daughter) said E.J. stop it, you'll get a hole in your nose. E.J.'s response was "Uhm I already have holes in my nose" Carina told her, now in the bone in the middle. E.J. asked my wife who said it was true that could happen and Carina said "My daddy has to have nose surgery because he got one" E.J. promptly stopped picking.

Beware Charles. I have had the surgery twice, once in November the again early March. Only a 9 mm hole and it has failed both times. I went to an ENT first then a highly recommended Plastic Surgeon whom is a perfectionist at this procedure. Currently I am 7 weeks post op and this week a 3 mm hole has shown up. I'm at a loss. I don't think I can stand the surgery again. I should have tried a button to start but both talked me out of it. If you do it good luck.

You need to stop picking! This is how I got the hole in my nose. I picked the same scab for 5 years and one day, I picked it and I saw blood coming from both of my nostrils and started to whistle out of my nose. Now I have to deal with this hole the rest of my life. My doctor said there are surgeries, but are usually very unsuccessful. Pretty much you have to learn to live with it. Buy a NettiPot, or any nasal saline, and use that for a few days to see if your stabbing goes away.

hello I have the same issue I use soft nasal dilators and find they stop this at night such as MegaVent Universal Nasal Dilator or Max-Air Nose Cones I also use Ponaris nasal oil during the day to keep it moist and stop drying out.

It could be a nasal drip, you can get prescribed nasal sprays from your doctors. I have this and whenever you get a cold most of the time you will get a nasal drip which gives you thrush on the tongue thing is the white stuff, the feeling something is on the back of your throat and bad breath.

i think you need to go and get it checked out, because usually nasal polyps that bleed are signs of cancer or nasal cancer. Just as a precaution because i had a nephew who had nasal polyps and it bleed so, the doctors did a biopsy and found out it was cancer. Also, get checked out for cystic fibrosis because nasal polyps might be a symptoms of cystic fibrosis. By the way cystic fibrosis is a life-shorting illness that kills young people, nasal polyp is a sign.

Please help me??? I'm 22 and have a hole in my nose and its gettin bigger and bigger, I had a cold constant for months so was using nasal sprays and after months I noticed a hole, I literaly can't live like this I have a daughter and ant be happy atall, I'm ill with it can't c bow I can go on like this :( please help before its to late I am so lost been to doctors and they sent me to hospital, and the hospital just gave me a rinse, I really think the only option is surgery, but I amy afford it can someone please give me some advice ? Xxxx

Hi, if you get referred by your doctor to a surgeon you will not have to pay for the surgery. I had mine fixed at Doncaster infirmary, get referred by your doctor to him and it will be on the nhs, I didn't live in Doncaster but I got someone to take me up there. He is meant to be the best and he has a good success rate, I had mine fixed 2 years ago now. I felt the same as you, it made me really down and I was worried sick about it but you will feel better once the hole is repaired x

After reading what every one is saying i have to say i too found myself with a hole the size of an eraser head on a pencil.I didn't realize at the time that it was caused initially by a blow to the nose And i started getting bloody noses while sleeping and then later on they came all the time.I had the ent quaterize it.It left be with huge scabs which would eventually come out when my nose got real dry and scabby and then it would start all over again with a big scab. This brought me back to the ent and again and quarterized it again. So this was makinf the beginings of this hole because i always had scabs .Well today i figured out what i was doing wrong. What you need to do is get the hole to heal that means stop the scabbing and keep it clean. To do this is very simple.First use saline when ever you can throughout the day after you use that put a fingertip of triple antibiotic in the nose gently rub all areas.Do the same for the other side.Use this 3 times a day religiously. Now my nose is very dry so i also use regular bacitration when ever i feel it is dry.You will notice when you blow the scabs will come out continue flushing with saline.Once the hole has no scabs on it continue with both ointments all day and saline a couple of time just to keep any scabs from lingering. The whole deal hear is keep the hole open and free of mucus and it will not scab up and you will find you can breathe like you hadn't in a long time.I know i do.It has been three days now since i started this and i no longer have scabs or obstructions in my nose.I can live without stress no because i know how to take care of my self. You see surgeries are not the answers they sometimes become more of a problem since there are not to many surgeons who can do these surgeries successfully.Living with this hole in the septum is now just a matter of bacitration and tripleantibiotic ointment a couple of times a day my nose is healthier then it has ever felt.So don't fret if you follow this for three days you will be amazed.I hope this helps someone good luck....

I would like help deciding whether to have a septal button inserted or have surgery to close a hole in my septum. The perforation is from a septoplasty I had done three years ago. I only recently learned that it is there. I've been told the hole is not very big. The only symptoms I have are that I can't breath very well on the left side of my nose and I get a lot of post nasal drip and sinus infections. Could those symptoms be related to this problem? Any advice on button versus surgery?

Hi I developed a hole in my septum 12 years ago. It started after having constant nose bleeds during pregnancy. I developed a small scab that I couldn't leave alone! eventually a small whole developed I was shocked, anyhow the edges kept crusting and I kept picking and the hole got bigger and bigger. I saw an ENT surgeon who offered me a repair or a button, I chose the button, it was ok at first but as the hole was to big the button kept slipping so then I went back for a repair. The surgeon took cartilage from my ear unfortunately this did not work so had another operation although this did not close the hole it did make it smaller after with I had an other button put in. I have now had the button in for ten years and it is nice and tight and comfortable and I hardly notice that it is there also the edge around the hole are now clean and do not crust so perhaps I could now have the button removed as the hole probably would crust now. 12 years ago it was a bit like a button hole that kept fraying around the edges therefor getting increasingly larger but now that has stopped as the button has prevented me from picking and hence let the hole edges heal. Sorry for being a bit long winded hope this helps.

My perforation is due to having gang green pumped out of my body when appendix broke. The tubes in nose tore through the septum. I was 14. Nothing was done until I was 33 and an ENT put in the septum button. It was there for 28 years I had it removed after 28 years as it was dried and cracked. It did make the hole much larger. I have done nothing in the past 6 years and am thinking now what the next step should be.

After a year and a half of progressive sinus problems and blockages, I've had a CT and they found a large hole up in my septum! This is most likely from when I was a baby and given adult doses of nasal medications to treat persistent ear infections to save my hearing. I've never had a sense of smell, so it seems the medication has burnt a hole in the septum. The septum hole is too large to repair, but I will be having a sinus opening operation soon as I have an impaired immune system and years of sinus infections have practically ruined them. I have relied on sinus rinses for months to get me through this but it's not a cure :( Does anyone use a softening cream to deal with soreness as well as rinses?

Hi Marie..i use a medicated ointment which has menthol in it...helps with breathing.your comments are actually reassuring, I have yet to see specialist about Mt septum hole

You never noticed the hole! This surprises me as if its that large it should be quite visible if you look up your nose. There are several good creams a available ... talk to your pharmacist, and tell him your problem

I have been to the doctors and have a 10mm hole. He gave me some naseptin nasal cream (told me to use it about 3 times a week) to keep the hole infection free and also use Vaseline as often as required to keep the area moist while the edge heals. I find keeping it moist definitely helps but i have no idea how long it will take for the edges to heal does anyone know? I live in the UK and wouldn't mind surgery but no idea where to start looking for that option No real symptoms other than occasional whistling

Actually, he is trying to dissuade me from the operation saying that my symptom is not caused by the hole. Still, if I cover it with a thin scrap of paper, my breathing is a lot better. Thank you for your advice. I use AQUA MARIS and COLDASTOP nasal sprays which usually help a little.

I have recently been diagnosed with a hole in my nasal septum. The resulting whistling is making it difficult to sleep and driving me crazy! Would a button solve this problem and are there any other pprocedures to help this?

I developed the hole right at 50 years ago. It started as a pinhole and of course it was whistling. It actually enlarged rather quickly and the doctor cauterized it. The whistling stopped as it enlarged. At that time I was told surgery did not have a high success rate and I might have problems with extreme cold weather. Mucus does form, sometimes hardening, but I try and keep everything moist so that cleans out.

My septum has eroded at the back and making its way down to front ... there is no hole but just erosion..I used to pick excessively and take coke... I've noticed a dent in my two sides of my nasal bridge...I'm worried and don't what to do this year is going to be a really bad one
