    Nasal Polyp

Nasal Polyps are fleshy swellings that occur within the nasal passage, and though they can grow large, they are not cancerous. Read more →

Hello, I'm not sure if I have nasal polyps, but when I look up my nose I have what look like swellings up each nostril, one worse than the other at the moment but can change, they look fleshy, red and I can't feel them but I can never breathe properly out my nose and when I do have a look the passage down my nose is mostly all closed up, it was only when someone else looked I realised it wasn't right! Recently also I've noticed blood coming from them, not enough to worry about but I wondered if anyone else had the same problem? I have been to the doctors who just looked in my ears and gave me drops? Also recently bought more sprays for my nose but I don't notice any difference really! I'd have an op on this like I've seen comments have done! But the thought of being awake and having it I just don't think I could go through it! Any advice or anyone have the same problem!!!!

You probably have swollen turbinates. I have the same problem. They are fleshy coloured balls that when inflamed you can see yourself by shining a torch etc up your nostril. I've had two operations on mine and I'm still struggling to breathe propperly even now, 2 years later. It all makes you very depressed as not a lot of people appreciate you breathe 24/7, any continual problems really impact quality of life. You need to ask your gp to refer to you to an ENT consultant. I was misdiagnosed by my gp for 8 months and my ENT, although trying hasn't managed to fix my problem.

My sons nasal septum was damaged by a cpap machine being fitted tightly when he was in the neonatal unit. As a consequence he does not have a nasal septum and I was wondering if I could obtain advice on what procedures are available to rebuild his nasal septum or who I can speak too to obtain advice. He has visited a NHS plastic surgeon but I wanted to see if I could get some independent advice. Thanks.

Does he have problems related to it? What is your concern? What problem does he display?

Hi Judith, My son doesn't have a problem related to it. His nose tip is not supported so kind of hangs down. I would say his problem is more cosmetic. We were given two options to rebuild his nasal septum. The first was to remove some skin from his stomach side and apply it to his nose and hope this skin naturally attaches itself to his nose. The alternative sounds a bit horrifying whereby they will take skin from behind his ear over his head and attach it to his nose. This last option has a better success rate. What I wanted to know was which option would give a better natural finish. I don't want to put my son through any unnecessary pain but he wants it done as his pears at school are now starting to ask him about his nose which is starting to annoy him a lot, as well as bullying as a result of him being different. And if he does want to go through with it I would rather he did a procedure that gave the better as natural as possible finish. So could do with advice of different options available be it NHS or private. He would then need a second operation to ensure both nasal holes are similar in size. Thanks, Sukhi.

His nasal septum surgery appointmentioned has been fixed for first week in Feb 2016. His plastic surgeon has recommended the first option as he believes it would be easier for my son than the second option. I would like further independent advice on this. If you email me, I can email you by return a mobile number to contact me on as I would be happy for you to contact me on either my email address or mobile number. Thanks, Sukhi.

What can i do to regain my sence of smell i've been suffering from this problem for the past three years, been to local GP and was prescribed with Flixonase Nasule Nasal drops and Nasonex Nasal spray unfortunately it's doing no good,Kind regaurds,

I have suffered what can only be described as a nasal drip for the last 3 years or so. I constantly have to clear my throat or else it starts to effect my voice. Then I have to cough up this horrible green gunk. I have tried so many nasal sprays over the years but nothing works. the doctor just keeps giving me different sprays to try. It is so annoying, not just to me but to everyone around me. Btw I suffer from Asthma, Underactive Thyroid and Barretts disease too. Help

Hello all appreciate hearing your posts! I have recently developed a nasal perforation due to the use of fluctocasone (a nasal decongestant). I saw a ent doctor and had surgery to close it. For the procedure a mucosa flap was cut, rotated, and stitched into place. The procedure unfortunately did not work. I am seeking a second opinion and having the size of the hole monitored. Currently it is between 5-6mm. My question and concern here is does the hole get bigger over time? Thanks!

Hi, I live in Australia and I have a Large Hard Lump in my left nostril that I have had for the past 2 1/2 - 3 years that started out fairly small and is now getting that big that when I use my clap machine at night the air can hardly move past it and my nasal mask rubs and digs into it and make it hurt more. I haven't had any bleeding but it is always sore and itchy. I don't have any nasal piercing and I don't think it is a polyp, it is just inside my nose and now extends up the nose on the top and outside area (On the inside of the nose) if you understand what I mean and at night it keep me away cause is gets so itchy and sore. I also have problems when I lay down, as my nose on one or sometimes both block up to a point I cant use my mask at all. If it is only block on one side this side can change, it isn't always the same side. I went to my Doctor and he didn't seem concern only told me to buy a nasal spray that I couldn't afford to buy. I don't know what to do, it is become a real problem to me, both the lump and the blocking. I can't prop myself up either as I suffer with major pain and need to turn over a lot, and if I do sit up it takes forever for my nose to unblock again. Does anymore have any suggestions as to what it could be and anything that can be done? I am on a Pension so expensive choices are out. All help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Earlier in the year I was diagnosed with a “huge” nasal septal perforation. I had a nasal septal button fitted that was 28mm diameter with a centre core of 6mm diameter, it was fitted complete at this size. I was told this is what is normally used but usually cut down to fit. I was also told due to not having much cartilage left at the base of my nose where nostril openings are, that it may not be successful. When I went for a follow up appointment I was sure the button had moved. The ENT doctor said it had and I thought he was going to adjust it but he rather just pulled it out. He went on to say nothing more can be done. I wonder if anyone could offer any advice on getting a solution, if anyone knows of any doctors or techniques available via the NHS within the UK that could help me? BACKGROUND: I have had continued problems with my nose for over 10 years, with repeated GP visits. Around 4.5 years ago, I was admitted to hospital with chest pains (centre and below left ribcage). I was diagnosed with Pneumonia and Pleuracy. After leaving hospital, I also developed shingles and continued to have the pain/ discomfort in centre of chest, got increased issues with reflux and had increasing problems breathing... I was finally diagnosed with Asthma in January of this year and appear to be responding to the symbicort medication but unfortunately the problems caused by the septal perforation aggravate my Asthma and make life quite miserable – after being relatively symptom free for a month, those issues are now more heightened and it has confirmed the perforation is the reason I feel continually weak and tired... If anyone can offer any help or advice I would appreciate. I am going back for second opinion but am hoping a specialist of nasal surgery or someone who has had similar issues but got them resolved may be able to comment? Thanks in advance

I dont have any anwers but I wanted to say that now I dont feel alone. I didnt kno this is a common condition. Iv had my nose problems for 5yrs and recently developed a hole. Five years ago my nose started scabbing evertime I blew it. The scabs wouldnt blow out so I had to use my finger. So embarrassing. My dr said to use saline nose spray to keep it moist. Im wondering if the saline made my cartridge thin?

"So embarrassing. My dr said to use saline nose spray to keep it moist. Im wondering if the saline made my cartridge thin?" Get over the embarrassment and stop picking your nose with your finger (trauma is a common cause and finger picking is one of those)... a little embarrassment is a small price to pay to not end up in the situation I am in... Look up nasal septal perforation via google... lots of info... I am not sure about saline solution making worse? I used it for years after seeing an ENT 'specialist' I now have a "HUGE" hole but I also used to clean my nose with wet wipes... Tbh I do not remember having a septum, so don't know when this dates to for me and can't confirm issues with saline... Various Rhinitis nasal sprays can cause or contribute to a septal perforation... I am not sure with regards the "nasal douche" if it is to keep moist? as salt tends to draw out moisture? I though it was to fight infection? Whilst it is not a long term solution Naseptin has proved someway helpful, as it does also soften scabs and helps them to come out when blowing nose and also consequently helps reduce amount of force used in trying to dislodge, which has to be better... I think it also has antiseptic qualities... the first week I used it was amazing it cleared out all top of my nose, which I guess was sinuses and sinusitis as I have since learned... Dependant on size of hole it may be worth pursuing ENT to get checked if any medical reason for erosion and consideration of the fitting of a septal button... This should also help improve any symptoms you may have relating to the perforation. The button should also help with scab formation as it settles... My advice is to question as much as you feel necessary... Surprisingly after over 10 years of struggling the onus has been put on me by my gp this very day and apparently I should have found out more etc... So ask until you are satisfied and ask again to be sure... Research as much as you can and do not be bullied by a GP who has little or no knowledge or experience in the subject matter... Seems long winded and maybe over cautious but I have since had pneumonia, pleurisy, developed asthma and it severely restricted my life :( and is immiserating... so on that note please stop picking with finger as you are risking further problems that you would live to regret... If you can't find any help, I did find petroleum jelly and the vics version useful as they also soften inside nose scabs and "crusting" as the doctors call it. the vics can help give sense of easier breathing to at night... the ENT i saw said was ok although I get impression he wasn't as convinced with vics in nose... but no reason to not put under nostrils... and apply naseptin or vaseline carefully with a qtip internally... Think about how it affects you and discuss those with your doctor as reasons for a potential referal? Good luck!

I have had a hole in my septum now for 13 years due to facial injury in a car accident it. It has got bigger over the years and last year I finally had a septum button fitted, this only lasted two months and came out. Went back to see consultant who said he would fit another one and this was final as he said there was nothing more they could do for me. I went back to my GP and asked to be referred to someone else for a second opinion. The consultant took one look and referred me to a someone else for surgery. Don't give in ask to be referred.

I am 62 and take tadalafil to help in keeping erections.although my penis is not really bent,it does have large swellings at each side of it.Is this still classed as Peyronies disease? Is there anyone else out there who just has large swellings or bumps on their penis? I agree with eric's posting it would be great if stem cell science could help all the many men who are suffering with this complaint.

I have a stuffy nose, nasal drip and I see nasal polyps in both nasal passages. I hate doctors so im too afraid to go. I am 19 years old for you information.

Seriously, if the polyps are visible without any thing like an endoscope then you'll notice a difference in your entire life if you get them removed. I just did and I'm 18 and my life has gone from being sick all the time to being more healthy than I can ever remember.

hello I have the same issue I use soft nasal dilators and find they stop this at night such as MegaVent Universal Nasal Dilator or Max-Air Nose Cones I also use Ponaris nasal oil during the day to keep it moist and stop drying out.

It could be a nasal drip, you can get prescribed nasal sprays from your doctors. I have this and whenever you get a cold most of the time you will get a nasal drip which gives you thrush on the tongue thing is the white stuff, the feeling something is on the back of your throat and bad breath.

i think you need to go and get it checked out, because usually nasal polyps that bleed are signs of cancer or nasal cancer. Just as a precaution because i had a nephew who had nasal polyps and it bleed so, the doctors did a biopsy and found out it was cancer. Also, get checked out for cystic fibrosis because nasal polyps might be a symptoms of cystic fibrosis. By the way cystic fibrosis is a life-shorting illness that kills young people, nasal polyp is a sign.

Had this problem for years till an ENT doctor told me to douche my nasal passages with 3x teaspoons of sea salt 1x teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda into 2 pints of boiled water. You need a nasal douche and it needs to be done at least twice daily to begin with but it healed my nose and made breathing much clearer.Just look on the internet for tips on nasal douching and how to do it correctly. i didnt think it would work as i had tried everything but its amazed me how something so simple has cured such a horrible problem. Give it a go....i bet after a week you will be a lot happier with your nose.

I'm a crohns patient and I do domestic cleaning for a job Since taking azothiaprine last year for my crohns I have suffered with severe nasal discomfort , crusting, bleeding. I have tried everything from naseptin nasal cream to saline solution to steroid creams etc. I have just been on an 8 week course of prednisolone for my crohns and my nose problems still there! I just can't understand why it won't clear! I have been under private ENT doctor and he still can't fathom what the problem is. Could it be my crohns? Or is it more likely to be nasal septum perforation from using cleaning products ? Someone please help me! Just anything to relieve the pain and runny nose would be a god send

Hi, I´m 52 and I have not tasted or smelled anything for over 20 years due to nasal polys. I have had numerous sinus cleans and 4 nasal polyp removal operations to clear the passages and sadly the stuffiness recurs, especially if I drink alcohol and after a cold and can stay for up to 3 months, so I don´t drink. I live in fear that they will come back, as the surgeon said that he cannot operate again as all the flesh inside my nose has been removed, apparently, the polyps have roots that dig deep into the bone. My Danish friend gave me a nasal spray ZYMELIN which I use occasionally and very sparingly, its excellent for me and gives me relief.

I have had both chronic angioedema and chronic urticaria since I was 12 years old, I am now 27! I still get episodes of both and have had some pretty serious issues because of this including internal swellings and swellings which have affected my airway. I have also experienced all of the drugs the doctors put you on and all of the side affects that can go with them including weight gain, depression, anxiety, not to mention the embarrassment of when your lip swells up 5 times its normal size and everyone is staring at you like there is no tomorrow! I was with my specialist for over 10 years and he could not find any solution to my problem, I no longer see him as it is pointless. The only thing that you can do is just find what works for you, I'am very healthy like most of you have mentioned and I manage my condition with tranexamic acid and benedryl acrivastine when I feel like I am going to get a swelling. I never read things like this let alone write on them but I can totally understand the despair that some of you are going through and just thought I would share my views.

Sarah, try NeilMed nasal rinse. You can get it from Amazon. Try the starter kit and you'll see it will near enough sort you out. Cleaning out your nasal passages is like a secret nobody tells you about. it's really bizarre. And it is a cheap enough way for you to continue using it. You will be surprised at how much it will help you. Good luck, Sarah. xx

I also have no sense of smell this 5yrs, what is the point of eating when u can't taste your food properly!!! So annoying, had 2 x nasal polyp removal ops - the only thing that works for me is steroids!!! I would also like to know, if nasal polyps are food related??? There must be some solution to this problem!!!!

Colette asked a question on 2 August about nasal blockage going from one side to the other. I have suffered from this for years and have been using Sinex nasal decongestant lately which clears it and lets me sleep. I'm concerned that I shouldn't use this long term but cannot find where legitmate answers from medical people are to the questions raised on this site.

I have just had my second Fess and Polypectomy operation to remove polyps. Steriods does give you your sence of smell back and taste for a while. But was told at my 6 wk check up that i would have to be on a steriod nasal spray for life and i am only 43 years old. Having just come into the hay fever season things are even worse. So I sympathise with everyone who has nasal polyps .

Hi guys, I've been told I have bb, I have had antibiotics from the doctors cus I had a cold that lasted more than 10 days, I have used nAsal sprays so I have no post nasal drip. I visit the dentist on a regular basis so I have no gum disease and perfect oral hygiene. But I have been told my smell is coming from the front of my mouth. Please help I'm getting very depressed about this.
