For the past 6 months I have been having pain in my upper abdomen and throughout I have periods where I been having pain when passing stools. There is no change to my stools when the pain first starts then I feel the need to pass a stool frequently, up to 5 times a day or even more. Sometimes there is blood but rarely. Lately I have been seeing what I can describe as bits of fleshy tissue in the bowel after. I have been told I have gastritis and gallbladder polyps. Is is linked in anyway?

I have suffered with constipation for quite some time now. My stools are almost always hard and difficult to pass, and I tend to poo three or less times a week. I have recently become aware that before I need to relieve myself I can feel the stools through the back of my vaginal wall? Applying a gentle (painless) pressure to this helps me a lot in passing stools. Unfortunately because of my busy schedule at the moment I cannot go to the doctors for around another month, but I still want to try and solve this problem. Is there any way I can without being prescribed anything?

Hi. I have exactly the same problem and am searching this site to see if its normal or not as Id hate to go to the drs only to be told its normal!! Susanne

Hi have the same problem ,can anyone help ?.i eat quite healthy I've tried high fibre diets and still nothing ,I can drink orange juice by the carton and eat fruit and I'm still lucky to go to the toilet twice a week ,feel very bloated .

hi My niece (2 and half years old) has terrible pain when passing stools - her face is so upsetting as you can see that she is in pain, often screaming "NO!" as she doesn't want the stool to pass, it culminates in screaming and a whole lot of crying. There has more recently been the bright red blood and clear hard stools. She also cries when cleaning the area with a baby wipe (which I have now advised the parents to stop until seeing a doc). It is currently bank holiday so not really too much we can do until tuesday. Is it unusual for a child of this age to have fissures? Is it likely that she will struggle in same way for rest of her life? (assuming of course that it is a fissure). We worry more because our father dies of bowel cancer at the age of 42 and both myself and my brother have had anal fissures. Looking forward to hearing any comments as it is heart breaking to see her in so much pain. thank you beth

Hi I recently started to pass blood a lot when I go for a poo and I have stopped passing regular hard stools. It is now all watery and I'm full of wind. Been like it for 2 weeks now but never had a problem before. I am a healthy 25 year old but concerned and embarrassed on what to do about it as its just come on. I can't pass wind now either for fear of passing a form of discharge! What's it likely to be?? Many thanks

Hey, I would firstly say seeing your GP is best. However I think your mention of "hard stools" suggests you may be chronically constipated, stools are supposed to be well formed but soft. If you find you normally strain a bit when you pass a stool this could also be a sign. The bleeding is most likely to be a symptom of haemorrhoids, do you feel slight pain, especially if you have to strain? The trapped wind is also a giveaway that you may be slightly constipated. I am a healthy female of the same age and had the same problem, I typically passed hard stools then I experienced passing loose stools on occasion and trapped wind. I had a general check up and my doctor kindly informed me that I was "full of poo"! I was advised to use mild laxatives or prunes. The best way to combat the problem is to ensure you have enough fibre and drink 8 cups of water a day. Also I squeeze some lemon juice into tepid water and have that first thing in the morning, that helps me. But again, sudden changes and the presence of blood in your stools suggest you should see a GP to get absolute peace of mind. Hope that was somewhat helpful.

I gave bith five months and was cut near to my anus when passing stools it very painful will this ever stop pls help

I have extremely painful lower back pain and my stools are black like a tar. My doctor believes my back pain is not linked to the change in my stools but this has all come about at the same time.

I have been told that I have a small pile since having my children which I am able to pull in with my muscles when it protrudes. But recently I had a lot more blood when passing even soft stools, the blood will actually drip out and sometimes contains very small clots. I don't have any itching or pain normally, but always experience pain when passing any size of stools. Is this something more serious or just down to the pile

I have been suffering from constipation for a few years. What I am about to post may or may not be the proper medical things to do but it alleviates pain and the incompetance to pass stools immediately. I use a water bottle and literally squirt hot water up my backside (obviously luke warm). You only need about 50 mls, this instantly cures the problem of passing stools, which do come out like hard pellets. I have tried fruit and veg and plenty of fluids but the fact is results vary from passing stools easily to not being able to. This is not too disimilar to having an enema although in a smaller scale. After I do this I throw away the bottle. All I can say is thank god for Highland spring. I hope this helps others

Hi for the past week I've been having what I we would describe a knife like pain in my anus mainly when I have a bowl movement it lasts for about 10 seconds.when I'm actually passing stools I have no pain. Seems to be at its worst in the morning. I've looked and I don't appear to have any blood in my stools or any other kind of symptoms. Thank you

Ive had problems with my bowel ever since i had my daughter who is aged 3yrs, i have been to the docs who just said this was constipation, some days my stools are really hard like balls but most of the time it is like passing a submarine, they are very long and very wide and is constantly blocking the toilet. Thing is everytime i go to the loo and try to pass stools, im in agony, i have been in tears with the pain quite often & its cutting my anus, & as the stools are so big and sometimes they are soft but just to big to pass. I end up sitting for about an hour, and the pain is near enough to the pain of giving birth. I dread going for a number 2. Before i had my daughter i never had any problems with this.

I was getting awful pain when passing stools about the end of december 2012, i went to see the nurse and did have a small anal fissure. I was given sachets of powder to mix with water and drink to make it easier to pass stools. Suppositories, and cream gel to put both on and internally to take away pain. Now 5 months on it's getting painful again, i might go back to my nurse/gp for advice, i'm not constipated, very regular in fact.

Get GNT cream, it can give you headaches but my fissure got worse and worse, I advise you to sort it now, I was 3 years in agony!!!! I used lepicol which is a fabulous natural product which soften your stool. Best of luck

I had an operation to remove a skin tag and piles at the same time. This was two years ago. Now, I still suffer excruciating pain when I go to the loo to poo. Fear of passing stools is completely ruining my social life and if my stools are anything other than runny...I suffer so much pain that I sweat. Think twice about any operation. There may be success stories but mine is not one. Oh, when I returned to the doctor about a year after my op I was told that I had piles again and was given cream. I still have pain!!!

I have had very bad pain for as many years as i can remeber in my intestines when wanting to pass stools or with windit can be a pain that moves down or a burning sensation . I also get more pain when i am having a period and this pain can be very serveer . Sometimes to relieve the pain while passing a stool i have to press on the area between my vagina and anus

Hi AJ. When I was about your age something like that happened to me. Wondering if you have any mucus too when going? If the blood is bright red it is fresh, dark red could indicate an internal bleed. Sometimes anal fissures can occur from irritable bowel problems, which could mean your insides have taken a bit of a bashing & caused a tear. However there are many different reasons for bleeding & when it is causing distress it is best to get it checked out. The dr may want to do the finger examination but you can just ask for a referal if you prefer. However you will probably need to get an internal done. It's a bit embarrasing but 15 mins or less of embarrassment is better than the problem getting worse.

I recently passed a stool which felt like I was passing broken glass. Afterwards there was bright red blood on the tissue and some in the toilet. The same thing happened the following day and I noticed that there was some drops of blood in the toilet bowl after pushing but not actually passing a stool. I have had piles before so have been using the cream for this to try and help as well as taking sennakot to soften the stools. This has helped to reduce the pain when passing a stool but there is still some blood ( although this seems to be lessening) . Does this sound like an anal fissure?

I know what you're going through. I had an anal fissure for the first time back in Nov.of 2009. After being extremely stressed, which caused me to become constipated, then extremely hard stool...anal fissure. Worst pain I've ever had..ever!! And I've given birth w/ no drugs, plus have a giant tattoo on my back...those were a walk in the park compared to that fissure. I had it for 3 months before I finally went to a specialist. I tried family doctors, different creams/oils I found online, you name it, I bought it! My family dr tried to prescribe me anti-depressants...ugh!! As if it were all in my head!! I finally broke down (no insurance, so it cost me about $200 to walk in the door) and saw a dr that specialized in that area..colorectal surgeon I think they're called? She prescribed me something called Diltiazem ointment...which I highly recommend to you, if possible!! Within 5 wks of using that stuff, it finally started going away. It actually DID go away at last! I got it on Aug.23rd 2009 (yes I recall the exact date), and by Christmas of 2009 I was feeling way better, after continuously using the ointment (half hour before using the bathroom, and also right after using it) also I tried to take a warm bath every time I used the bathroom (obviously this was a huge pain, cuz I do work full time) if I couldn't take a bath, I'd wet some TP w/ a bit of water and just dab (don't wipe!!) and dab, and dab, and dab...I actually hated that cuz I felt like I was never totally clean but that is what the dr told me to do, and then as soon as I'd come home I'd hop in the tub. Also, I started taking Miralax almost every night (it's a laxative/stool softener), or I'd switch between that at night or a glass of prune juice right before bed. (Be careful w/ the prune juice though..like half of a small cup will be enough, especially if it's a good brand like Sun Sweet..very strong!! And you do NOT want diarrhea..trust me, this happened to me, not pleasant), also I didn't really drink any alcohol (very little), drank hot tea instead of coffee, ate a ton of fruits & veggies. I still say to this day it was the combo of the baths (also used to mix this stuff called alum salts in the bath, which you can find on amazon.com for very cheap) and that Diltiazem ointment. Unfortunately for me, here we are Nov.2013 and I'm pretty damn sure I have another one as of last week. The messed up part is, I wasn't even constipated this time :(( Just had a bout of diarrhea (sorry to be graphic) because of my IBS symptoms, and I woke up last week w/ a pain in my ass (literally)..except this time it's not as bad (fingers crossed it doesn't get that bad ever again!!) I'm so sorry for your pain, I sympathize w/ you so much!! Right now I'm in deathly fear of this thing turning into what it was back in 2009!! Please, please if you can, see a specialist and ask for Diltiazem ointment!!

I have always had problems passing stools since I was a baby, and spent alot of time in hospital as a kid, I am now 35 and recently as in the last 3 months! It has been nearly 3 weeks since I have passed any stools and I am now having severe pain in my stomach and its getting higher up my chest, how can I solve this problem? As it is really starting to affect my daily life. And advice will be helpful, also laxative doesn't seem to work!

Alice, I hope you will go to see your doctor very soon. Also, keep well hydrated by drinking at least eight glasses of water every day. Eat a high-fibre diet. But most important, you should see your doctor. You probably will be referred to a gastroenterologist and perhaps other specialists. If you take prescription meds, check to see whether they have constipation as a side effect. Maybe there is a substitute that wouldn't cause so much of this problem. I hope you'll get taken care of now.

I have two small lumps on anus. They are currently not hurting while passing stools but sometimes when stools get hard they pain for few days and get swallon and also bleed. Blood is only few drops dark red, but later on they become small again and pain also relieves. Are these piles and is there any ointment to treat it home. I have also uploaded a photo on your gallery. It is a photo of anus with many hairs and two lumps.

I've recently been diagnosed with having 2 anal fissures, and they're really unpleasant. For over a month I'd felt a sharp, stabbing pain whenever I was trying to pass stools. It felt just like a cut was being stretched and torn open. I thought it would heal by itself, since my passing of stools isn't THAT often. However, after a month of pain, and spotting blood on the toilet paper I plucked up the guts to see my GP. It's really not that embarrassing at all, even though I knew that fingers would have to go in places I didn't want them to be. It's all for the greater good, and it was nothing he hasn't seen loads of times. He's given me fibre supplements and a steroid cream to use frequently every day. I've used them for just under a week and although the pain is still there, it has lessened. Another bonus is that the pain from after my toilet visit is a lot less violent. It's literally a pain in the bum to have fissures, but get them diagnosed. It takes a big worry off your shoulders, and the right creams can be given to you to help make something very uncomfortable, more tolerable.

I started passing stools that look like rabbit droppings but bigger. I have seen a specialist and had a colonoscopy; the diagnosis was that I had IBS. When I need to go for a poo I have to try and find a toilet asap otherwise I am in immense pain and when I do eventually go i also bleed. I eat healthy food with lot of fruit and vegetables and have tried high fibre breakfasts but these just create bloatedness and wind. In the past couple of weeks I have started drinking one Actimel a day and my stools are beginning to get back to what I consider normal and my stomach feels so much more comfortable.

Hi I have been diagnosed with a mild rectal prolapse but was told to hold off on surgery until I decide if I want more kids ( I have two already). Would having more kids if I had surgery affect the repair? Also, I have mucus in my stools, gas on passing stools/mucus and either constipated or stools are like baby poo. Are these syptoms associated with the rectal problem or could they be sign of something else? thanks

For the past 2 days my stools have been like passing water. They are pure brown liquid. I don't have stomach cramps or any pain. I have to get up 6/7 times a night with the diahorrea. Can you help?
