For many years I have suffered with abscesses, in various different areas of my body. I have had 3 operations to treat a pilonidal sinus, the last one being a complete de-briding of all the tracking and I was left with a huge cavity that had to be packed daily for nearly a year. I feel that the abscesses are getting worse and more frequent. I had one in my groin a few months ago, it was very painful and even though I bathed it in hot water it did not go, so I went to the doctors who prescribed antibiotics and it did disappear but never came to a head or burst. For the last week the same area has been getting increasingly sore, and I now have a large lump about the size of a golf ball, it is very red, and painful. Some pus and blood has come out of it, so thought it would start to ease, but if anything it has got worse and I have even noticed some red tracking on the skin surface which worries me, as this suggests its spreading. I have never had any health care professional mention HS to me, despite my history with abscesses and pilonidal sinuses. Is there a difference between HS, and just being susceptible to abscesses, or is the frequency and aggressive abscesses i'm getting a clear indication that I am suffering from HS.

Hi, I think you may have the start of HS. I have suffered with this desease for 33 years. I have experienced many sorts of treatments and I hate to sound dispondant but none have curred but some have eased the condition temporarily. I have had surgical intervention, numerous antibiotics, cortisone injections, estrodial with andracur a hormone therapy and numerous creams and oitments. I get the condition on both breasts, both groins, buttocks and in the anal region. I really do synpathise with you and all I can say is keep the area clean and ventilate whenever possible. Do not clog the region with talc, soaps or creams as I feel this could make the condition worse. I have been told it is not necessarily the sweat glands but linked to the follicle and subasceous connected. I only wear cotton underwear and loose fitting clothing which I appreciate is not necessarily fashionable. Hope I have helped although not all good news keep smiling and don't let them get you down and go on with life as it is too short. To help with the pain I have been prescribed Voltoral an anti-inflamatory and codydromol pain killer. Taken together it does ease the pain. Regards and take care.

For the past 3 days i've had a serious blocked nose. I just can't seem to shift it, i honestly think it's something to do with my sinuses. I have taken Olbas oil and inhaled minted strong water and nothing does the trick. What do I do? I can barely breathe.

    have you tried cb12

I have always suffered with my sinuses, my whole life. Excessive congestion from it and problems breathing through it. Last year I visited the doctor and he picked up on the fact there was a hole in my nose, since then my problems with it have worsened, I forever have sinititus an it affects my ears an throat. Its really bad as I can't really breath through it, it's worse of a morning an it takes me literally about 15 mins of a morning to blow it an it's always just blood. It's only now that my gp is referring me to ENT clinic, just wondering what sort procedures they will offer me.

Hi, I have a son who is 16 months. When I was in labour I didnt tear, the midwife cut me, then I was stitched up. Since I had my son I am finding it very painful when having sex with my partner. It is extremely painful during and after sex. I do have some days were it is ok but it is very painful most of the time. I have been to my GP and she just said it is thrush, I have used all the creams but it is still painful. I know for a fact it is not thrush. I have had to put up with this for almost a year and I just cant put up with it anymore. It is really putting strain on our relationship and I just want to be able to have sex as normal. I really hope you can help me x

I have grommets in my ears and the doctor says there is wax and can't see the grommets for it. I have had dizziness, sore sinuses, fluid draining and building up in my ear. I go to the ENT department at my local hospital for a 6 month check up. The doctor said ENT will remove the earwax because of the grommets and then they will be able to see what's going on or if the wax is the main problem I had a urine infection which required 2 lots of antibiotics and then a sinus infection which I took Augmentin 625mg for several weeks ago. The dizziness etc has continued but the fluid and blocked ear feeling has only been about 7 days. Can you give me any advice and will the hospital remove the wax without having to go back again. It is extremely sore. Many thanks

Sounds like a urinary tract infection. Buy some cranberry tablets, drink cranberry juice and ask the pharmacist for some over the counter medicine. Always wee straight after sex.

To all who have commented on this blog, thank you for your helpful suggestion, and I'm thinking of you and feel for you all, I hope you find a solution. I have finally managed to get something done on the NHS, a letter came on Friday asking me to make an appt for a scan of my sinuses, with the hope that this will mean I can get my sinuses and nose operated on, and any snot etc that might be causing my BB cleaned out. Wish me luck, here's hoping for a miracle.

I have had acid reflux symptoms for a few years now, but they are getting more frequent and much more intense. I am anxious about eating anything these days, I just dont know whats going to trigger my symptoms. Most noticeable (painful) symptoms on a daily basis: - Wake in the morning with sinuses and throat clogged up with mucus which takes hours to clear - stomach ache/burning immediately after eating - constant burping/need to burp - food regurgitation (the weird thing about this is it is effortless and does not taste acidic) - intense throat burning which can make me sick - nausea - loss of appetite - blocked sinuses - headaches - sleepless nights - constant throat clearing/mucus obstruction I have been on double doses of omeprazole for over a year to no avail. I drink Gaviscon for fun but ironically it actually burns my throat! Nothing helps me with this condition whatsoever. I am due to have endoscopy next week. Hopefully they can pin this on something and i can get my life back!

I hope so too! Let us know how your endoscopy turned out. I have had similar symptoms for the past 3 months.

Thanks for your comment Lilly. I had the gastroscopy done yesterday. Word of advice, TAKE THE SEDATIVE. I had a pretty rough experience. I backed out of the sedative at the last minute as I wanted to be up and out as fast as possible. I choked and gagged all the way through and felt quite panicky. The staff were great and reassured me. The tube was thicker and firmer than I expected, and it felt very unnatural. However, over very quickly and there are literally NO after effects other than a slight sore throat. The plus side, they found a hiatus hernia which us causing my acid so i can move forward and make changes to phase it out. They also found inflamation of my small bowel which is something i never expected. I am having crohns disease investigations soon as it runs in the family. All in all a very positive experience. Its amazing how much they can find in a matter of minutes. Its worth the 5 minutes of discomfort people. Take the sedative, thats my only regret

Hi Kelley - I have had numerous sinus operations over 20-30 years, and also now have perforation. Great! Your description of difficulty breathing, sinus pain, headaches, sleepless nights and smell of rotting skin is me too!! This whole thing dictates your whole life. I wake up EVERY day and have to try and clear my nose, take paracetamol (4 at a time) and then survive work!! Solution; sadly, still waiting I just KNOW it's almost as my sinuses are full all the time - I have asked Doctors over the years, what about simply putting whole to enable sinuses to drain the stuff that is in there - usually infected stuff? BUT they do not seem to understand the surgery required....

About 3months ago I underwent an operation for the excision of my pilonidal sinus. It was a rather extensive procedure, as I had been suffering with the problem for about 3/4years previous. I ended up having 6 individual sinuses removed, which collectively left a MASSIVE wound! (over 6cm deep and 7cm in length) I am pleased to say that the recovery process has been going well, but I am anxious to know what sort of steps can be taken to prevent this troublesome and PAINFUL problem from reccuring?

I had bad breath from nose and mouth for 15yrs,then I was sure to brush my teeth and tongue with disclosing tablets for a professional clean but noticed tonsil crypts in the back of my throat filled with food or puss. So I had my tonsils removed and my problem completely disappeared. 4 yrs later I had a slight injury to my nose and realised the bad breath came back, went to an ent doctor who operated on my etmoid sinuses smoothing them out and made my drainage hole bigger. This helped to drain my sinuses better, but the only thing that eliminated the bad smell was betnesol n drops. However, the problem later returned and I discovered it to be worse when I drank milk - I had been drinking a tall skinny hot chocolate from starbucks every morning for years! I cut this out and took Bee Propolis capsules from holland & barrett which worked wonders. However, after a while neither the betnesol or the bee propolis work now so I have cut out milk completely and use neilmed sinus rinse which helps, but I find the key is to drink plenty and plenty of WATER which keeps the sinuses hydrated and flushes them out. I hope this gives you a few options to try and am still looking for a permanent cure. I am a confident and sociable, but even I have felt suicidle because of this! Why can't scientists find a cure for this??

It might be your tonsils (tonsil stones) or sinuses drink lots of water and cut down on dairy. And see your gp I am sure loads of people go with this take care :)

Hi, I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 12 and then with aspirin intolerance when I was 16. When I was17 I had my first surgery to remove the polyps. I was totally blocked, for months couldn't breath through nose only by mouth . I also couldn't sleep at night because I had to blow my nose constantly, couldn't do any exercise and just felt extremely miserable. They told me I had extended polyps in all sinuses and probably didn't manage to remove all of the polyps as in a 1 year and a half after the 1st surgery I had to have another one. That one went better and I was ok for about 2 years. I had my last surgery when I was. 20 and I'm 24 now and start feeling awful again. The symptoms are back. Blocked nose, constant discharge from my nose, headaches, blocked ears. It's pretty painful when ear or ears are blocked and painful ax well not to mention that it's hard to concentrate. It's a horrible illness and I feel sorry for everyone who suffers like that. I hope I can get another surgery soon although don't know how many operations one can have in life. Hope we get better on day and there will be a cure.

I've never seen or heard of anyone having the same problem I have, a hole in their septum, from nose picking. I'm too embarrassed to seek help or talk to anyone about it. I'm shaking even as I share now. Thank you for this forum.

Anne see your Dr...I know they've seen worse things so don't be embarrassed...isn't this a wonderful support site...so pleased I found it!

I have recently had a really bad cold. When ever I get a cold I seem to have a lot of mucus which makes it really hard to hear. How does fluid in the sinuses block hearing? Could this be an infection?

I have suffered nose bleeds throughout my life. I also suffered from hay fever and sinusitis. I noticed a hole a year ago, and my nose would make a very embarrassing whistling noise when I breath. It's so loud that others can hear it, and it keeps me awake at night. I was perceived a steroid spray, and this caused further more nose bleeds. Finally, I was referred to a hospital and told that I will need to see a specialist. I may be offered a skin graft (although that's unlikely) or a button. To be frank, I'll take anything because I'm so tired of the head aches, the difficulty breathing, the painful sinuses, the whistling, the bleeding, the sleepless nights, and the constant smell of rotting skin. I hope this can all be fixed soon!

Hi I am surprised you were given a steriod spray as this can cause perforations!! and would only exaberate the problem. There should is quite a few options available now including a new one called titanium membrane which apparently has shown promising successful results for larger perforations. Try using vaseline daily in the interim. Good Luck

I have always had blocked sinuses, ears and also a bad chest. I sniffed hard earlier and a piece of what's looks like flesh, the size of a squashed pea came out if the back of my nose :-( might this be a polyp? I'm taking Clatithromycin and Prednisolone for my chest at the moment.

I am sorry that I missed the programme. My husband is 50 years old (which is apparently out side the usual age band) and is going into hospital this week for his first op for this condition. He appears to have at least 5 sinuses and the consultant has informed us that his healing could be 6 - 8 weeks. I am hopeful that the op takes care of the condition.

The lack of sympathy shown by your GP is pretty typical, they really are not interested. My snoring is appalling yet, I have not smoked or taken an alcoholic drink in over 15 years. Yes I am a tad overweight, but I'm afraid that is just an easy option for GP's. How can one make a scientific diagnosis without testing or observation? I have tried many off the shelf treatments, sprays, nasal strips, pallett strips, rings, bands, exercise. I'm convinced the off the shelf solutions have little to do with science and are as`likely to work as witchcraft. I did get a few weeks respite following an operation to "weed the garden" as the surgeon called it to remove polyps from various sinuses and straighten my nose, but that was to address other problems. However it was soon back to sleepless nights for me and my exhausted fiance, dry painful throats in the morning and tiredness all day long. Personally I would like to see more surgical solutions, off the shelf does not work. Please help.

I have exactly the same problem. 28 and always had this issue. It constantly feels congested in my sinuses, and always coughing up some thing up. Every time i went to the doctors they said it is common and it could be because i smoked. Well, i dont remeber smoking when i was 5 and used to get teased at school becuse of it. Anyway went to the docs last night and made them refer me to ENT clinic. Fingers crossed. I shall keep you updated.

I've suffered with pilonidal sinuses on my back, acne keloidis (dissecting cellulitis of the scalp) and most recently HS and tried soooooooo many things and had sooooo many ops and got so depressed with it all. If you can afford it or have insurance then take my advice and go to the london dermatology centre and see dr chopra who has been on embarassing bodies before. the man is a miracle worker and really nice too.
