I had it so bad about 6 months ago that I could barely leave the house. It wasn't that I was constantly Ill (although I was Ill everyday) it was more about the stress of being ill. Recently my doctor gave me amitriptyline and it's at least 10x better. It helps with the bowel but also stress. Stress makes IBS much worse. If you can reduce your stress and anxiety it will help. Just remember how common ibs is and that many of us have been through what your going through. Avoiding certain foods helps. Alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine, sorbitol, dairy, fizzy drinks and certain fruit and veg ( like peels and dried fruit and green veg like spinach) are known triggers in a lot of people. Make sure to have soluble fibre too, it allows your bowel to clear at a regular pace. Porridge is a great example, I have it everyday and it really helps with wind and bloating. I know it seems silly to say to have more fibre if you have dioreah but it clears the bowel and does help. Mixing too much medication can make things worse. I used to make this mistake all the time. Peppermint capsules are good for cramps, wind and bloating . I found them acidic so I take them with anti acids after checking with my doctor. I only take this on rare occasions when I get cramps but many people have success with them. normally I have 2 loperamides and 25mg amitriptyline. I used to take 10 loperamides a day (i ignored the doctor) and this caused me to feel like I hadn't fully emptied my bowel, making mornings impossible. Mebeverine and buscopan were useless for me. They never help when I have bloated phases or cramps either and did nothing to stop me running for the loo! I think the worse part of ibs is the embarrassment , especially if you are a woman. Explaining why your ill to male coworkers and teachers is painful on top of the constant worry about what happens if you're ill and being ill in public toilets. I hope somewhere in my rambling I've helped! If you're feeling stressed I would definitely think of counselling and ask your doctor about amitriptyline . I lost a job cos of ibs last year and nearly failed uni because I began to have panic attacks and couldn't leave the house and I feel like I'm starting to get my life back after 3 miserable years. I

I am 14 years old, and have very heavy and painful periods. So bad i have to take a day of school when it first happens.I also have sickness and diarrhoea throught the whole period and they last 5-8 days long. What can i do to help stop/help the pain(calpol and nurofen do not help)?

You need to take your dad back to his GP and ask for some tests an endoscopy would assess his gullet and stomach to see if there is a narrowing or a scan to rule out anything sinister.

I have a dry mouth condition that is a side effect of taking sea sickness pills. This is the cause of bad breath for me; and even refraining (as advised by the maxilla-facial professional)from use of this pill does not improve the condition. I seem to be stuck with this situation now. What can be done?

Ive had HS which started in the groin area and over 20 yrs spread to the underarms, under my breasts (small cysts)and recently had really bad one on the backside. I had to phone andtake holidays many times due to this as it was causing me high sickness never mind a lot of pain and sickness over the yrs. I too have polycystic ovaries and I felt that this triggered the condition. Seems though that the Dr's know this already. Im 39 and asked for a hysterectomy in a bid to cure both conditions and was refused - ps I am unable to have children hence this request.

Every month, on the first day of my period, i get extreme pain! It feels like my stomach is been grabbed by a big pair of hands and twisted apart! And then the sickness comes. violent, projectile vomit. All day! Im literally bedridden screaming my heart out with the pain but i actually welcome the sickness because it takes the pain away, for a minute or two that is! And i bloat so bad i literally look like a hippo!!! Everyone thinks im pregnant with triplets! and thats not jut when im on my period, thats all the time!!! its hell and iv been fired three times because of it!!! Is there anything wrong with me or does my body just hate me? My diet isnt bad and i excerize a lot so i just want to know the problem!!! Is it anything serious and what can i do about it? Thanx

Has your CRS discussed the LIS procedure with you? It's worth an ask. It might be if you are still of child bearing age, they might be reluctant but this procedure is recommended to be a very satisfactory procedure with a lot of pain relief. For those who have been suffering for a long time, it's definitely worth considering.....A CRS will mostly look at this as last resort but I would push for discussion on it. You can only suffer for so long. Wishing you all the very best....

I am 13years old and i was recently diagnosed with IBS after suffering from bouts of abdominal pain, sickness, diaoreah and constipation. I kept a food diary to find out what triggered my IBS and found that it was citrusy foods such as tomatos, lemons, oranges, onions etc. I asked my doctor wether i should cut these things out of my diet but she reassured me that i could keep a normal diet so long as i was careful and that i took one of my prescribed tablets as soon as i felt any sickness or cramps within a couple of hours of eating these foods. I am so glad that i went to the doctor when i did as i now have my IBS as under control as i can which is important as i have my SATs exams coming up very very soon. I missed a lot of school before i was diagnosed with IBS but i am now in control and am on target to get the levels i want in my exams!!!

during the pregnancy of my first child born 2007, i had pregnancy sickness from 3 months onwards until 4 days after my son was born.2 days after i had him i developed excema on the soles of my feet(i have had a doctor confirm this)and it has got worse to the point it is sometimes painful to walk.it has also spread to the whole of each arch and one big toe.i have used steroid cream, aqueous cream,e45,taken many vitamins and omega caps and nothing seems to help.i was severly malnourished when i had my baby and weighed 2 stone less.the midwives failed to be bothered about my condition.could my excema be caused by loss of minerals or essential vitamins caused by the pregnancy sickness?i have never had any kind of skin problem before in fact i have usually very oily skin.

of course not although it may make it a sore if you are too aggresive or do it a bit too often during 24 hours.

Hi I am 27 years old female. I have been suffering with cronic stomach pains, including sickness, diareah on and off. I have even been sick which was thick black red gunk sort of thing. I have had test for ibs such as a colonostopy and nothing was found. I was diagnosed with a hietus hernia in 2003 but lost so much weight i stopped having symtoms.I was told that my problems would become more severe when i put weight back on but when i speak to doctors they dont think it is to do with this? I have put my weight on and am constantly having major pains and cramps but no one can put a dianoses to my problems. I have lost nearly a stone in the last ten days and becoming frustrated as i was admitted into hospital a couple of days ago with these pains and sickness and was told they dont think they'll be able to get to the bottom of it, i feel really embarassed and feels as if i am a fake.since i left hopsital only yesterday i have had constant diareah and yet again been told its probably gastroenteritus. Dont know where to turn?

Hi in response to Candy I am going to be 50 this year. I was first diagnosed 16 years ago after various treatment for herpes. After been under a very good professor in the UK things have gotten a lot better. I still take medication but not as often as before an my outbreaks are now down to once a year. It's been a strange one because my 23 year old daughter was diagnosed with this at 13. She has just had the worst attack which has lasted almost 3 week's. A support group is needed as we have nit found many people In the UK who have this syndrome

Is it normal after a couple of months after sex putting on weight, getting stomach aches and having cravings? But I have morning sickness?
