Hi, has anyone heard of tonsiliths or tonsil stones. I think I have them at the moment and don't know how to get rid of them. They are white stuff/spots on the tonsils. They are a build up of food/ plaque etc.. that stick in the crevices of your tonsils and create BAD BREATH! I used to get these as a teenager and was given and endless array of antibiotics. Dunno why they have come back. Any advice welcome.

I have these too..please let me know if u find a cure I hate them and they get me down.

hi i have these. its caused by bacteria getting stuck in the holes in the tonsil area. These holes were ment to get smaller and close up with age but some remain big. therefore all food and bacteria accumilate in the holes. I dig mine out with cotton buds and wipe over the area with a chlorhexidine based mouthwash. I think if you want and the doctor says you can have the tonisl area removed or quarterized. But it will always get stuck in there unless you get them out! hope that helps

I get tonsilitus at least 2-5 times a year, however, in between that my tonsils flair up and it causes my glands to inflame too. My tonsils are also rather large and I get food stuck in them which also causes my tonsils to become sore and for my breath to smell. I'm 18 so i have put up for this for quite a while now and im fed up. Does this make me a suitable candidate for a tonsillectomy?

I have the same problem, have just been to the doctors and they referred me to ENT department at hospital and they gave agreed to take them out. Hope this helps.

This was the same for my daughter for 3 1/2 yrs throughout her university life. She had them lasered last July and hasn't been ill since! It has changed her life. As she says 'I now have a life'

I've had a sore throat for about a week now, I took a look today and can see that my tonsils are very swollen (patchy red and white) with a few white spots on them. My glands are very swollen as well. My tonsils are gradually getting more swollen. However, I have no other symptoms of tonsillitis; Having had it a couple times in my childhood I know its not that.

My tonsils were 4x the size of a normal child growing up. I would snore so loud and keep my friends up at sleepovers and it was embarrassing. I also would get strep throat several times a year, I'd say 7 or 8 times, keeping me out of school for up to 2 months in the 2rd grade. The real problem with the tonsils was they would make me hold my breath while sleeping, waking me up several times a night. I began to get insomnia as a child. I went to ear nose and throat doctor and was notified that my tonsils were 4x bigger than normal tonsils. They swiftly scheduled and removed my tonsils. Since then I have only been affected by strep throat sparingly an my snoring and sleeping has improved greatly. Best wishes to you Megan!

What alternative surgical treatments are there to remove tonsils? I saw it on a previous episode where a young girl had her tonsils removed by a laser? This meant her recovery was quicker than the normal procedure.

I had this myself, I'm constantly getting sore throats and tonsitits atleast 5 times a year, 2 of these times being unbearable I can't even leave my bed. I was told last year I would 'grow out of it' Id never suffered until I was atleast 16 and I am now 21. As this was effecting my work attendance I refused to listen to the doctors advice, after all im spending at least £50 a year just on antibiotics, I pushed for a second opinion with the ENT dept. The moment the doctor looked at my throat I was referred straight away as my tonsils were inflamed and pitted without having tonsilitis. I'm now due to be having them out anytime and have been gifted tonsillitis this weekend! Keep pushing, they can't deny you a referral. Good luck 😊

I have tonsil stones regularly which smell horribly and I can also constantly taste them. I try and remove daily but through gargling and massaging the tonsils but they always come back. I would like my tonsils removed, will my doctor allow this or can I request it to be done privately? Why should I have to put up with this every day if I want them removed it should be my choice I have to live with it !

hi, i have been also suffering tonsil stones before. What I did is I brush my teeth longer than usual .I prefer one with lots of flouride . then I use baking soda to brush my tongue, and scrape it with spoon, gargle for 2 minutes with 10% hydrogen peroxide mixed with water (see label) twice a day,I see to it that it reaches my throat. Then I use cotton swab wet with hydrogen peroxide to cleanse my tonsils, throat, tonsil crypts.Be careful not to gag. The first time I used the swab it burnt my tonsils, or rather probably these were bacteria or yeasts because now it no longer burn. I went to the ENT and prescribed me med so my burnt tonsils wont get infected. Its been 5 months now since Ive been doing this and when I regularly check my tonsils by pressing it,I could no longer squeeze any stones.I noticed also that my tonsil areas are red and healthy compared before . Hope this helps.. :)

Btw, floss daily and after gargling with H2O2 rinse with water. For a finishing touch, I use cotton balls , wet it with coco virgin oil and dab on my tongue..If you still have bb even with tonsil stones gone, try the candida check . . Just read lately, a guy with white patches of yeast in the esophagus, throat area as seen in his endoscopy..his taking anti fungal drugs and his bb are gone...

The cause of bad breath might be to do with your tonsils. Look up tonsilloliths on yahoo and have a look. A build up of debris gets lodged in your tonsils and produces vile smelling yellow lumps. I had that problem and had my tonsils taken out and now I have no more bad breath. Confidence is brimming now when I talk to people. prod your tonsils and get to the doctors to be referred for tonsillectomy! Post again if you find you have this problem and let us know! Good luck.

Wow, on Googling "Tonsilloliths" as so helpfully pointed out above has resolved a habit I have had since my teens! (Although I am now only 23) - I honestly thought I was the only one in the world to experience these clusterous forms. I thought for all these years I was suffering from some kind of compulsive disorder as I check for them frequently and love removing them! The best ones are the ones that you can feel are there as most satisfactory and easily removed! On inspection they always look like they would have a host of living organisms if you inspected them under a microscope! I did worry I encouraged the outbreaks with my constant prodding and poking but feel reassured now having read my Wikipedia about it which recommends prodding away - hygienically of course! I would never have my tonsils removed for these minor inconveniences for they are the first line of defence in the first place; I just imagine they would form deeper down the throat otherwise and I wouldn't be able to see them any more! Interestingly enough it suggests a number of reasons for these Tonsilloliths of which I will now explore because I do certainly find the condition fluctuates and it could be for any number of the reasons suggested. The condition certainly does have periods of calm and this can last weeks, or I might just see a more mucussy residue like they're starting/trying to form once again. I just then gargle with Listerine. I love the little blighters and I can't say I suffer from halitosis which was brandished amongst this page which would be my worst fear!! I obsess about bad breath and I am reassured I do not suffer from it above the norm; garlic, morning breath etc - so although the Tonsilloliths themselves do (always) smell it doesn't automatically mean the worst: Bad Breath (or Geoff Breath as I like to call it). Phew! I am so glad I read into this tonight and can feel reassured that there are loads more people out there staring in to a mirror, armed with a torch and prodding at their tonsils which I always thought was such a strange habit of mine to have. Thank you for the knowledge xx

When I was about 14 I came out all of a sudden with bad tonsillitis, I have never been Ill like this before I always have managed to fight illnesses of very quick, even when I've had the flu I'm up out of bed after a day! But this tonsillitis never went I had antibiotics after antibiotics for months, the doctor even said he ain't seen tonsils as bad as mine in over 6 months! Eventually the tonsillitis cleared but left my tonsils very scarred and still didn't feel 100% I am now 19 years old and my tonsils are still no better my throats always sore and my tonsils look dreadful no White lumps any more tho, I keep getting lumps on the side of my neck which I think are my lynth nodes, is there any more information someone could give me any advice I'm really not keen on having my tonsils taken out! I just don't know why it won't go i still feel Ill 5 years later... Help x

Have you talked to your Dr. about the possibility of tonsil stone? Its mucas and food that get stuck it the pockets in your tonsils and causes bacteria to grow and smell like poo its gross but it could be the problem, one way to tell is if you have yellow or white spots on your tonsils those are actually little balls of yuck which can be removed several different ways. Hope this helps. Im having that problem right now make me want to cry im going to see my doctor in the morning hopefully to find out if im right about it.

About 4 years ago I noticed that every few months my tonsils would become enlarged and sore and if I tensed my throat or pushed on my tonsils, small round greenish yellow, ball shaped things would come out of the gaps in my tonsils. when squeezed they would squish. Recently this has become more often, when this happens (every month now) I get bad breath as well. I don't know what it is, but it is more uncomfortable than anything.

After two years of suffering from bad breath, chronic tonsils inflammation and several unsuccessful antibiotics treatments I went to an ENT had my throat tested against Staphylococcus aureus, results came back positive.I had my tonsils out and it's so much better now. Get your tonsils checked, sometimes bad breath has nothing to do with hygiene

I've had my tonsils removed after having constant trouble with them, however 6 years on I've never suffered hardly a sore throat since until this week I noticed I had a swollen throat for around 4 days and struggling to swallow, I looked in the mirror and the back of my throat is full of white/yellow spots...is it possible for your tonsils to grow back?? Or is this just an ordinary throat infection??

I have tonsil stones and I have suffered with them for 2 months now - I can usually get them out but now I can't. They're hidden somewhere behind or around my tonsils. I have extremly large tonsils and they have huge crates in them. They hurt and bleed some times, I've had tonsillitis a few times and my tonsils stop me from brathing at night - so I psychically have to sit up and breathe so my air ways can clear. I am fed up of this, it's knocked my confidence, I am in pain. What should I do? Help...

even if you will remove them, the bad breath will remain.i have mine removed too but unfortunately my breath still stinks and thus, my life sucks.but im trying my best to get rid of it.you can try gargling warm water with salt to help lessen your problem.but i felt better that my tonsils were removed coz at least its clear now that the reason of my bb is not from tonsils.i have sinusitis, post nasal drip, allergies and stomach problems.if you have these too, well goodluck to both of us.i hope that the Lord God Almighty in heaven will bless us this year with the cure and a lot of huge blessings.

Get your tonsils removed, no more tonsil crypts, tonsillitis or bad breath. Good luck

to little children like your daughter tonsils plays an effective role in the immune system if she removed them her immune system will be more vulnerable to viruses and bacteria than before...the doctors recommends the removable of tonsils when the patient is older an adult and tonsils are not useful as they used to be :D

Have you checked out tonsiloliths these are yellowish green balls like small peas that get trapped in the folds of your tonsils and they smell horrifically. In a mirror look at your tonsils take a clean handle of a toothbrush and lightly press against your tonsils put gentle pressure around the edges and these little balls should pop out.Unfortunatley if it is the case that you have them there is no cure except a tonsillectomy.

I used to get tonsulitus a lot when I was 16 I had it 12 times in a year and had my tonsils removed, a week later my tonsil beds heamoraged resulting in me being critically ill and needing a blood transfusion. I'm now 20 and have a massively swollen throat/ glands a sore neck and I have white spots in the back of my throat, Iv been very sore and feverish and getting night sweats. It's like tonsulitus, but worse and I have no tonsils! What could it be??!!

Hey im katie :) im 17 and had my tonsils out in april. These past few days i have been having flu symptoms and a bad throat and massive glands so i went go the docs. She hardly examined me and told me noto worry its just a virus. Have a few days of rest and you'll be fine. I got hardly any sleep due to my throat being so painful. I went back to the doctors and saw a different doctor who told me i have tonsillitus. It is possible to get it after having them out but it's just rare!

I am 16 and have had bouts of tonsilitis which have repeatedly come back since I was 13/14. The tonsilitis itself has cleared up however, it has damaged my tonsils leaving many tears and holes which aren't painful but are a problem. When I eat food gets suck inside my tonsils and collects there which can become sore and irritable. The tonsils are so large that they almost block my throat completely which has caused snoring and difficulty swallowing food. I have also had times when I have woken choking as the tonsils close my throat. I have been referred to ENT but for anybody who suffers from anything similar and is embarrassed to check it out, I would advise that you see your GP as it can be quite dangerous although is fairly common.

I have well had the same problem. First their is curing and then prevention. Step 1 open mouth and check tonsils for tonsil stones. If there is a stone get a q tip a push on tonsil up against stone in direction that pushes it out like a pimple. step 2 is trying to prevent stones from building. Gargle with warm salt water. Use a water pick on the pockets of the tonsils. Rinse with alcohol free mouth wash. Just so you know even if you use these prevention methods they may come back. The tonsils create tonsil stones when there getting rid of dead cells, mucas, and bacteria. The tonsils are part of our immune system so they may come back after a flu or if your body is fighting off some bacteria or something and the tonsils are ridding itself of the cells bacteria etc... so even if your preventing and they come back it's ok. Just remove again. If it's happening alot though I would go to the doctor tell them what's been going on and have your tonsils checked for tonsillitis.

I have very swollen tonsils. I have had tonsil stones a few times and they have left holes in my tonsils. recently i have had very bad breath and a horrible taste in my mouth. i have tried different mouthwashes and toothpastes but nothing seems to work. my tonsils are causing me problems with breathing and swallowing at times. i went to the doctor, and she didnt even listen to me and all she prescribed was penicillin. is there anything I can do or try to alieviate my problems. Thanks

I've have very large tonsils and am always getting tonsillitis, I get white lumps on them that I have to pick off and sometimes they hurt that much I have to squeeze my tonsils to get the white lumps out, the lumps smell very bad and give me bad breath. When I get tonsillitis my tonsils swell up so big that you can't see down my throat, my tonsils are very large when there not fully inflamed but nearly all of the time they are inflamed, I have been to the doctors and asked them to take them and they have refused even though I am always having tonsillitis the give me penciling but that doesn't help in anyway at all. Please help me it is ruining my day to day life.

You know what I feel exactly the same as you. It feels like the doctors dont give a damn whether you're in pain, and believe that painkillers do wonders... it doesnt. What you should do is, get some bicarbonate of soda (can get it asda, tesco etc) put a teaspoon in a mug and fill it with luke warm water (make sure its not tap water, has to be boiled or from bottle) then in the morning after brushing and before going bed gargle your throat with it and then spit out (try not to swallos, might make you gassy) it should help you. Bicsrbonate of soda does wonders and do it for like 2 weeks.

Why aren't there any replies to these questions?? Someone answer me please, from what info I have found online and on a episode of embarrassing bodies I think I van now name what is going on in my mouth. I seem to have TONSIL STONES. Only problem is my tonsils were removed when I was 5, some 25 years ago. How can I have tonsil stones with no tonsils? Also I have had these stones attached to the back of my througt and side of mouth (when it first started) now it's like an empty swollen bag where my tonsils should be, it's slowed down (producing less stones) now but I can taste and smell them somedays, I can also feel the "bag" in my throght constantly. Can someone confirm I have tonsil stones without having tonsils? Also why are they referred to as stones because they are soft and squash into a paste when squeezed. Please reply!

My friend has this problem from scared tonsils. If you have scars in your throat from having tonsilitus or having them removed then it will cause the stones I'm not sure they can do anything about it apart from an awful operation to burn away the scars. ( if that even exists ). My friend regularly gargles with salt water or tcp and that helps reduce them

Hi, I'm sure your tonsils grow back. Maybe that empty bag is the start of the growth of new tonsils. I suffer with tonsillitis and have started to get tonsil stones. It's awful. Can i go to the doctors and just demand they take them out.

I have some yellow spots at the back of my throat, with some spots on the back of my tongue and one of my tonsils is enlarged with white bits on it. Any ideas?

Sounds like tonsil stones. Google it and you should find ways to take care of it :)

I suffered from chronic tonsillitis for over 1t year. I have been hospitalised about 5 time because the infection got so bad. The worst one I had was when my tonsils were touching and the roof of my mouth was swollen. After that nasty bout I got my tonsils taken out .... piece of cake compared to the last lot of tonsillitis!! As I type this I am suffering from tonsillitis again and I am unable to do much at all. I am so tired and in a lot of pain regardless of painkillers. Removing tonsils does not get rid of the possibility of getting tonsillitis. Now I can't get antibiotics as it's not recognised as "true" tonsillitis
