    Haemorrhoids

Also known as 'piles', this is a condition where the blood vessels in and around the anus become swollen and inflamed, subsequently forming small lumps. Read more →

a couple of weeks ago, i had a sharp pain whenever i went to the toilet, like half my rectum was missing. i felt a hard lump inside my rectum, which i though was the cause. The lump has now gone, but i haven't been to the toilet for about 5 days, and whenever i pass wind, i bleed from my rectum....... Any ideas?

This sounds like piles caused through straining. I'd buy some haemorrhoid cream, drink more water and eat more fibre.

I have multiple bowel movements throughout the day. The stools are thin, sometimes they have one side which is angular rather than round. I never feel that my rectum is completely empty and my vagina hurts after I have defecated, as though it were somehow attached to the rectum. I am kept awake at night by the pain from both vagina and rectum. Alternatively, if I have diarrhoea instead, my vagina then feels as though it is being stung by stinging nettles and I am unable to walk for the rest of the day.

Hey. I'm 23 with no kids or anything and I have exactly the same symptoms as you and I have been through all the tests (colonoscopy, defecating proctogram, anal manometry etc.) They concluded that I have rectal prolapse and rectocele, which basically means the rectum is prolapsing into the vagina. It can be fixed. In my case it looks like I'm having ventral rectopexy. Don't panic and look online forever until it gets worse, which is exactly what I did. Just go to the doctor go through the motions and they'll sort it out. Definitely too uncomfortable to carry on living with my love!

Im having tests for a prolapsed rectum, I cant pass stool whether its hard or soft without straining, then it feels like I havnt finished, I had a Laparascopic ventral mesh rectopexy 6 months ago, but things havnt improved. It gets so uncomfortable in the rectum, what can I do.

I just found out after 12 years, just by reading this article that I have a prolapsed rectum. It has bothered me before when going number 2, but I never thought much else of it. I am a 17 year old male and I just found this out. It now concerns me a lot. How do I get help? Also, I feel very messed up in the rectal and lower intestine area. I feel an uncomfortable numbness in the upper back area inside my rectum randomly every day. This greatly worries me. Is it a tumor? How do I find out?? Please help.

Emma, dont be shy to speak to your GP.You will need a referral to see a Gastroenterologist. I believe a course of bowel retraining by a specialist nurse can help and you may not even need surgery. However,If you do not get 100% relief, then the colorectal team (surgeons) will take over. Goodluck!

Its been like this for some time now the base of my heel is tender to walk on

I was told for years I had IBS. Two years ago I paid to see a consultant and was told I had diverticular disease. The constant pain and alternating bouts of diarrhoea/ small pellet like motions, absolute exhaustion, lack of concentration. The feeling that my rectum is dropping out when standing is ruining my life. I have also a vaginal prolapse and have a pessary inserted, I had a hysterectomy in 1976. I have to manually evacuate my rectum as my motions are so gundgy they seal it if not entirely cleared adding to the pain I have. Does anyone out there suffer these symptoms.

Have you had tests for a prolapsed bowel? I have all your symptoms and was diagnosed with diverticulitis a year after my hysterectomy in 2000. I have had the sigmoid colon removed and a resection which had many complications, Though I now still suffer from diverticulitis it is not as frequent. After some helpful physio for a prolapse bowel I can recommend that when you are on the toilet, put your feet on a low stool and lean forward with you elbows on your knees. You then need to take deep breaths using your diaphragm, if you try yawning taking deep breaths as you yawn, you will be using you diaphragm and will fell your abdomen moving rather than your chest and shoulders. This will help hard stools to move. Apparently we should all lean forward naturally anyway. It is the invention of toilets that stop our natural stance. If you think about crouching we automatically lean forward. This has been the best advice I had since my bowel problems began. Good luck. I would like to know how you get on.

I also suffer with diverticulitis - diagnosed 2010. Gas, constipation all the time. Then 2011 went to gasterentologist/surgeon to find out if anything could be done to help, had defacography told me to attend his wellness clinic, 8 sessions, on third visit nurse did a laser procedure for a "pocket" right at my rectum so I could evacuate better. I bled and could smell my own butt after that and dr. wouldn't see me because I quit his sessions! This made it worse, gas still a problem and now everyone at work can smell my butt too! Had to learn on my own how to evacuate completely in morning. I use gycerin suppositories if I don't feel like I had a complete evacuation. Sometimes, even that doesn't help and I get to work and the gas begins after sitting down for a while, which I cannot control long enough to get to the bathroom after that "procedure" for the pocket. Without a complete evacuation - then gas and pain. Evacuation sometimes consists of small pellets or even more bizzare, thin ribbon like sheets as if something has been smashed. I get pain on both lower sides. I have to take anitbiotics when the smell of the gas gets "horrible". I know I have infection then. But no dr. ever told me about that either...I found out on my own that antibiotics would make that horrible smell go away for awhile. Reading the post by Mary of bowel prolapse, I wonder if my problems began after my hysterectomy in 1995. If the divertic. is a result of incomplete evacuation. (I used to be regular like clockwork and no problems there) A few months after the hysterectomy, I experienced my first pain on my right side and the ribbon-like stool. If I jump around or stretch I feel the urge coming but sitting on the toliet... nothing! Get up and start walking...oops...gas! I went to a gynecologist recently and he said the pain and thin stool is a result of spasms! Finding a good doctor here is a challenge - I don't know who can help. I'm glad I read your posts!

I've had a sore throat for about a week now, I took a look today and can see that my tonsils are very swollen (patchy red and white) with a few white spots on them. My glands are very swollen as well. My tonsils are gradually getting more swollen. However, I have no other symptoms of tonsillitis; Having had it a couple times in my childhood I know its not that.

Hi Diane. can't help but have the same problem. especially in mornings. All morning. It lasts most of the day and ruins family events or major days in life. very difficult to pass stools although it is very small and just recently i have started to notice an orange kind of film coating. can anyone help???

I have this exact same problem, even using my fingers. It's frustrating because you can feel the poo inside you and you get really bloated but it just won't come out. I've made myself bleed terribly by doing this and I'm scared I'm causing myself more damage in the long run. I'm sorry I'm not answering your question but just wanted you to know you're not alone.

Hello! I had a doctor misdiagnose me with Ulcerative Colitis when I actually just had IBS when i was younger. She treated me with 40mgs. of Prednisone daily for 3 years straight which lead to me having to have 2 hemmoroidectomies (spelling?) due to the Prednisone thinning out my skin so much. My surgeon had to leave an internal hemorrhoid in me for blood supply reasons. It's now ten years later and the internal hemorrhoid prolapses daily and there's visible pink flesh that protrudes only on one side of the rectum. My question is can this be this be a partial rectal prolapse if it's only on one side of the rectum? I was also just recently diagnosed with having PFD and have to wait 2 months to see a colorectal surgeon. Thank you for your help!

Hello! I was recently diagnosed with Pelvic Floor Dysfunction and have to strain excessively to have a normal bowel movement every morning. If I have an internal hemorrhoid that protrudes on the left hand side when I have a bowel movement that is extremely painful and pink flesh is also visible after each bowel movement but only on the side where the internal hemorrhoid comes out. Is this a partial rectal prolapse or is it normal to see some pink flesh also protrude due to the internal hemorrhoid being flared up and coming out? Sorry to get so graphic but I'm very concerned and can't get into see a surgeon for months even though I stressed to them how bad this is on a daily basis. I've also had prior surgery to that area in the past if that helps any. Thank your for your help in advance!

    thanks for ur answer.

when im on the loo, doing a number 2 ive noticed that sometimes i dispose of some blood and it levels in thickness. it also feels like my inter layer of my anus is protruding out of my rectum. but it happens in different shapes and forms. some weeks nothing at all. then some weeks its full blown. i think its due to my diet, when i eat loads of fruit etc and when i dont. im just wondering should i get it checked out. it is really embarrassing when im 21 and showing a doctor my rectum. i think i suffer from prolapsed rectum. but i dont understand the bloody part in it.

Hi, you should get this checked out. I am male and 30 years old. I did have a rectal prolapse and before it was diagnosed was diagnosed with IBS, and in time it turned out to be strange symptoms similar to IBS but was the build up to the prolapse condition. I can relate to the embarrasing side...its not pleasant showing a doctor, and I had uncontrollable wind at times, often really bad too. Abdominal aches and strain where going to the loo so much throughout the day. I was 20 when I had my first operation and had four in all as its more tricky to treat being male. I had three procedures that involved removing a section/cutting some bowel away, and the fourth was last resort. This last resort involved a procedure through the abdominen and tying the bowel back. It has been a success so far being four years on, but risks interfering with nerves that can cause impotence hence last resort. One thing I remember is any sign of blood should be checked out. Bright is recent, dark is older. And there are all sorts of explanations. Some serious others not. The sooner tests are carried out the better for a number of reasons. If it is serious it needs to be diagnosed and treated sooner the better. All the time you are unsure what is going on, you are likely to worry and stress or get depressed like I did, so get peace of mind and act. Another thing I remember being told is that when I asked if I wasn't eating enough fibre I was told too much fibre can be a problem with the condition. Good luck

I have severe IBD. (CD) I have thumb sized skin tags around the entirety of my rectum from almost 8 years of my IBD. Is there anyway to get rid of them, and make my rectum look normal again?? Literally- it's so unsightly, and embarrassing.

    It's a rectal prolapse, see here http://pelvichealthphysio.blogspot.ca/2013/10/pelvic-organ-prolapse-part-1.html

I am a 75 yr old woman and have Coeliac disease which I diagnosed myself approx. 6 yrs ago. I've had a lot of surgery since I was 41 - first a hysterectomy/bladder/bowel repair and 5 months later a further bowel repair. Then in my 50's a prolapsed rectum which I didn't go to GP about until my late 50's. I had two non-intrusive ops. for the rectum prolapse, useless outcome. Then at 63 (still Coeliac not diagnosed) I had approx. 15" of intestines removed & a very intrusive op. for the rectum & I think the rectum problem was fixed somewhat by use of a "sling" inside. As I had malabsorption for yrs previously & continually the toilet, I thought when I diagnosed the Coeliac condition I would be fine. However, not as bad since on gluten free diet but a lot of escaping wind & faeces leakage. GP has seen this weeks ago & I have asked for Consultant referral. Do I need a further surgical op. to rectify. I'm just so weary of the embarrassmet of leakage and escaping wind.

Hi. I have had the same problem for 3 years. After numerous painful and embarrasing visits to my very sympathetic GP, she referred me to a consultant. He sent me for numerous tests and the result being a prolaspsed bowel (rectocele). I am now waiting fot a procedure called a STARR. My advice would be to see your GP and ask to be referred. I am still suffering but I have a diagnosis and I knowing that something is going to be done soon to help me makes it easier to cope day to day. One tip that was given to me and that has helped is to have my feet raised whilst trying to pass a motion (low stool or box). The "crouching" posstion easied things considerably. Good luck xx

o my god i have to do this too im too embarrased to tel my doctor, its been like this since i had my 3rd baby 2 yr ago i allso get pain doun below and in my stomach after sex it feels to me that r rectom has slipped into r vagina walls. so glad i saw your comment im not allone x

I have not been to the doctor yet because it just happened today but I had a bowel movement that was so large and hard I was physically unable to pass it. I spoke to a nurse and ended up having to go in with a glove to break pieces of it off until the rest would slide out. But now I'm bleeding and the whole area around my rectum feels swollen and squishy. I'm really scared seeing as I'm also 16 weeks pregnant.

Oh, sweetie...I feel your pain. Please know you are not alone in this. I know it's seriously painful and it's embarrassing and there's not a guarantee it'll go away. But any kind of pain you endure will make you stronger. As trite as that might sound, I promise, it is true. You're right to steer clear of pain killers, which as you say do not help ease that kind of piercing pain, and will cause constipation and other serious difficulties (I speak from experience). Please take this opportunity to strengthen yourself. Do not accept defeat. Don't even talk about death. Don't even think it. Continue to be proactive where you can be. What you cannot heal, you must learn to accept. Know that you are better for it. You are able to cope with a very private, but very real pain, and you are strong. Please don't disregard what I am saying because it might sound a bit flaky. I know how this sounds, but I swear, I am not a flake. I am a person who shares in this very same problem. I know how bad it is. Trust me, I do. But you must not give in to pain. You must never let it destroy you. Conquer it. Make the pain work for you, not against you.

Thank you I really appreciate your words . An update I had a 3 surgery. The surgean decided the rubber band in rectum wasn't working so they cut the whole area and removed a big piece of skin basicly he removed all the fistula and the skin around.I do have a big shunk of no skin close to anus but it is no longer painful I see no puss and I believe its healing . I finally see myself in a better place I will be sarting work on 17 almost and I won't be able to sit for 6 weeks . I will say one of the hardest part of the process other than the pain iis trying to get financial help to cover for medical bills I'm close to$ 50.000 grand on med ical bills its stressing me olot .

Im 35, i have a rectal prolapse, chronic anal fissure, a huge ulcer and piles in rectum...ive been waiting 6 months for treatment..ive lost so much blood through my rectum i now have low iron..which my gp will not treat as it will interfere with my rectal condition.Im at my wits end with it, what can i do..the gtn cream my gp has prescribed me gives me a pounding head..and is not correcting my symptoms.

Hi i had double prolapse almost 5 years ago, and i have to say it was the worst day of my life, the surgeon cut through viens, that she shouldnt of, i needed Emergancy surgery after a massive bleed, thought i was goung to die. Ive had nothing but trouble from down there ever since, i would never have it done again if i needed to, i have suffered depression ever since that day

Watching tonights programme, I missed the most part of the woman with a prolapsed rectum. I thought I had piles, but now I am not sure. I have to use toilet paper to hold against my rectum in order for me to empty my bladder. I don't want to ask my g.p. because although I only see him on average once a year (because of prescribed anti depressants)I think he may feel as though I am being a bit of a hypocondriac. Can anyone give me an idea of the feeling between the piles and prolapse as I can't look myself and wouldn't want my husband to either! Any help would be appreciated.

Is there a name for this condition? Or do I have a prolapsed rectum if I need to 'help myself' poo??? Thanks for any advice.

My daughter is four years old and has severely swollen tonsils, they touch when she sticks her tongue out, she has no other symptoms and I noticed this a month ago, is this normal?? I took her to a doctor, and they gave me a nurse instead who said they were just swollen. She also snores loudly. I've looked it up and found nothing, why are they swollen??

It's the poop left over in your rectum that's causing the leakage. I had the same problem until I stuck a finger in my butt and felt some poop left over. I use the bathroom when I'm about to take a shower and so after I poop and clean up, I stick a finger and manually take out a piece or 2 of poop that won't come out. Do this every time and the problem is gone. The main issue is that the rectum is not fully cleaning itself out

I had most of my rectum removed due to a cancerous tumour being found there last year. I had to wear a colostomy bag and had it reversed at the start of this year. I was told that it would take around a year till my bowels returned till anywhere near normal. But another added thing is my farts are very smelly which is embarassing. No matter what I eat my farts seem to be very smelly. Is this due to most of my rectum being removed and is there anything I can do to reduce the smell?
