I’ve noticed that quite a few of you have been brave enough to admit to suffering from erectile dysfunction. The truth is that all men will suffer from some sort of erectile dysfunction at some stage in their lives, but the good news is that for the vast majority this will correct itself in time.
Lots of you have written in to ask why can you get an erection when your masturbating but not during sex? And this is where we start to look at the various causes of erectile dysfunction. Some people can never really get or sustain an erection and often the cause of that is a physical one, problems with the nerves or problems with the blood supply. Others get a good erection when masturbating or find they get spontaneous erections early in the morning or during the night but are unable to perform with a partner and the causes of this are usually more psychological, to do with anxiety or self esteem.
A lot of you are asking about the possible causes of erectile dysfunction and the truth is there are many, lifestyle often plays a part. Not enough sleep, not enough exercise and too much alcohol are the common ones. Being overweight is another one. But another common cause of erectile dysfunction is actually a more serious underlying problem like heart disease, circulatory problems or diabetes. So if you have been suffering from it, do go and get a full check up with your GP.
One young man here is worried he’s getting too many erections during the day. Well, actually it’s completely normal for young men. Changes in testosterone levels during puberty and early adulthood, usually rises in testosterone cause erections and you’ll notice them particularly early in the morning or during the night. They’re nothing to worry about at all; it shows that everything is working properly.
A lot of you have left comments about premature ejaculation, saying how embarrassed you are about it. It’s actually surprisingly common; it can have a number of different causes including bad early sexual experiences and also underlying medical problems like diabetes. There are treatments available however so don’t let it affect you relationship. Go along and have a chat with your GP. Erectile dysfunction is not as beyond your control as you may think. Very common causes that I see in clinic include stress, smoking and being overweight. Those are all things that you can do something about.
