Voiceover: For some people it can have unexpected benefits, just ask septuagenarians Lillian and Ian from Aberdeenshire.

Lillian: I expected to have a greater feeling of well-being but in addition to that, my libido, which had never been great during my life, has improved quite a lot. It’s more or less expected that everybody’s libido wanes as they get older but for me, at 71, it has never been so good.

Voiceover: Sex? At 71? Is that normal?

Person on street 1: I think it’s great. Life doesn’t stop because people are of a certain age.

Person on street 2: They’d hurt themselves!

Person on street 3: When I’m old I plan to have lots of sex in, especially, the most embarrassing places I could possibly imagine.

Person on street 4: It would be different because you’re old and you wouldn’t have that much energy.

Voiceover: Lillian and Ian both had testosterone treatment to overcome low energy in the aftermath of menopause and andropause. She took pills, he had gel. And then Lillian found she both wanted and enjoyed sex more than any time in the previous 50 years of their marriage.

Ian: It’s so fantastic that it happens more frequently than it did on our honeymoon. Once the connections have been made it drives you on marvellously. It makes me think it wasn’t really my fault, it was just a missing wire.

Hormone replacement therapy is commonly used to treat the negative symptoms associated with the depletion of the sex hormones oestrogen (in women) and testosterone (in men) such as irritability and lack of energy. Here septuagenarian couple Lillian and Ian tell us about another more positive effect of HRT – an increased libido.

Where can I get details on trials and research about the negative effect of HRT on the over 60s. I am 62 and like many others was told to come off it just before I turned 60. I fail to understand how any trials have been held if GPs won't prescribe it to the over 60s If anyone has this info I would be grateful if they could point me in the right direction. At the moment I am inclined to think it is only a cost saving exercise as we get free prescriptions at 60. Mant thanks Chrissy

I think this article may be referring to the trail that recommended stopping HRT by 60 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2147835/A-wasted-decade-How-HRT-scare-caused-thousands-women-10-years-needless-suffering.html Hope this helps

At 50 I was suffering with some very negative symptoms of menause (extremely heavy yet erratic periods, sleeplessness, exhaustion etc). Doc put me on tablets: Prempak C. I didn't really think "HRT", but the symptoms totally went. Within days I was playing with teenage son and dog in garden in a way I'd not felt like for years. To boot, I'd been single for several years, but on these tabs WHOOSH...I really didn't imagine (couldn't) stay single any more. Met a gorgeous American a year ago, I'm now 53 and having absolutely fantastic sex - prolonged, frequent, fulfilling. Not quite the same as 20 years ago as per one lucky 50 yr old commentator above, but certainly in the same ball park. This is due no doubt the lovely man too, but I'm under no illusion these tabs are responsible for my current sexual hunger, which probably led me to hunt him out in the first place. (Fortunately he's very virile, so we're a great match!) Like many of the above writers, I would actually be afraid to stop the tablets. They also help me concentrate, and my business life is better as a result. They are truly life changing. Thank you Doc.

My wife is 60 and was on HRT for around 6 years. Last year she had some bleeding that was checked out and pronounced ok but GP very unhappy to continue HRT. Eventually agreed to patches for a year until 60 now insists these are stopped as well having reached the "magic" age of 60. he says there is nothing else available. My wife has none of the indicators that suggest extra caution needed but she will suffer considerable problems once HRT is withdrawn. Complete loss of libido, vaginal dryness and soreness++, reduced energy and worse of all - psoriasis that is horrid for her to have to deal with and for which dermatologists can offer nothing that helps. We both feel that as we enter the later stage of our life together we have both been sentenced to a life devoid of a sex life with her having to cope with a severe skin condition to boot. Dr. Pixie says there are many ways women can be helped and that there is no need for them to suffer in silence. Well it seems to me from comments here and from our own experience that this is far from the case and at 60 the view of medics is that you just need to get on with it and to want a sex life is just flippant! As for the psoriasis - tough. Whatever happened to informed choices?

I'm on it and I'm 61. My GP while not happy about it is fine. I am a mess without it- I choose to take the associated risks (which they're constantly changing their minds about anyway!)

Is there away of getting rid of hopes I do take ansiklavier tablets

i was wrongly pressured into having a hysterectomy when i was 27yrs old. just for heavy painfull periods. they took out both ovaries at the same time. i have been on hrt ever since (27yrs). started off having the inplant, but found they did not disolve, so switched to tablets. but i used to forget them sometimes. i now use ostragel, 4 pumps every day. i sweat so much, my hair is nearly always soaked and dripping wet. my face is always red, and sweaty. i have had a double prolapes opperation about 2yrs ago. but still have the same problems as before. trouble empying my bladder and bowels, and im quite often incontinent with both. all i ever get told from my gp's is its IBS. diet does not help. i feel so tiered all the time, and never seem to sleep properly.

After a serious car accident 4 months ago my doctor won't allow me to go back on to my HRT......I had been on it for many years and felt so'young and well on it....what are the risks?

I am 55 and have been taking HRT since going through an early menopause at 39 - I had to have a full hysterectomy at 52 and asked - nay begged my doctor to keep me on HRT (Climaval). I never want to come off it. My sex drive is better than it was 20 years ago and my energy levels are still high. I've told my doctor that if she takes me off it - I'll buy it off the internet. Apparently there is a bigger risk of Strokes/Breast cancer but to me the +s far outweigh the downside. I'd rather die after a short fulfilled life than live to be 100 miserable. I'd recommend that everyone who can - takes it

Can someone please give us the answer to all the people that has asked ( What did Lillian use that helped them so much))at least the name of the product/Tablets/Cream we all want to know but no one is responding to this question ??? WHY !!!

Lilian found out about an Australian cream for post menopausal women Called Androfem cream. It has a 1% testosteran component. You apply a tiny spot on to the clit hood daily.Once your libido has improved you gradually reduce the rate of application. After about 6 months she was only having one spot a week. She has now been on this level for more than four Years.
